RockvitLe, Nov. 23, 1891. ‘Tne most destructive storm that has visited this county for many years occurred today shortly after noon. The town, however, fared much better than the surrounding country. On the farm of Mr. W. H. Rabbitt a large two-story building used for housing cattle and Provender was blown down, a tenant house on the farm of Mr. Rudolph Watkins, a small barn belonging to Mrs. Mary Graffs on the Fred- erick road anda windmill on the adjoining fart of Dr. Wm. Waters were demolished. At Mineral Spring the dwelling house of Dr. O. M. Muncaster was literally blown to pieces. The house was unccoupied at the Sime, but contained a portion of the doctor's furniture, which was almost entirely destroyed. On the Stephens property adjoining the house was occupied b: . Anderson, who, with @ child, was sitting at the dinner table when the storm came, Finding that the house was about to go to pieces she caught up the child and reskea out amid the falling trees and flying pieces of timber and succeeded in oseaping without serious injurs. The chim- ney of the house of Mr. G. D. Crawford adjoin- ing was blown down and the building badly wrecked. ‘The house of Mr. W. A. Blodgett, in the same locality, wasalso badiy torn to pieces, the kitchen being forced away from the main building. At Laytonsville a number of houses were in- jured. From the evidence of persons who ve since passed over a portion of the coun- try devastated it appears that the path of the storm was very narrow, but in that path little was saved from destruction. BAM. ate es ta Charles Burrill Acquifted. Charles Burrill, alias Charles Murphy, who on Thureday last was convicted of larceny from the person (a watch from Thomas Laws), was yesterday tried in the Criminal Court on the charge of committing a rape on Ella Tine- ley on August 26 last. The occurrence is alleged to have occurred in the front yard of 427 20th street northwest. The defense was an alibi and a verdict of not guilty was found. ee é Life in Italy. ‘The second lecture of Miss Anna Seaton Schmidt on aucient Rome Monday evening wasa finished and scholarly production. . She again showed her capacity of holding the close atten- tion of her audience as she took them from the foundations of ancient Rome through the Capi- toline and Palatine bills, the Roman forum and palace of the Cwsars to the baths of Caracalla and out upon the Appian Way. The descrip- tion of the Atrium rn) Vesta and the history of the Vestal Virgina was most interesting. The detour to Hadrian's villa was delightfully intro- duced and the views were charming. The evoning closed with four magnificent views of the Colosseum, two of the interior and exterior as they are now seen, and two taken from an ancient painting of the fourth century, said to be authentie. bureau have contributed 965.50 to the Central Union Mission toward Uhkbsry J the poor of the city With a Thanksgiving dinner. ‘This sum was given in small amounts. pede Officers Elected.
