4 THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: WEDNEsDAv... November 25, 1991. CROSBY 8. NOYES, = far evenine or. a regular and permanent circulation in Washington three times larger than that of any ether paper im the city. Asn local NEWS puper and Advertising Medinm it has no competitor. has One party has appointed a time and a place for holding its national convention. The other Is preparing to do likewise. On the 8th of December the democratic executive committee ‘tMeets here to arrange for a meeting in January of the national committee, which wili fix upon @ date and a location for the convention. So far ahead all the entries even. bave not been made, and therefore it cannot be foretold Where the convention will assemble. The Places most talked of this early are Detroit and New York. There is much more reason why the democrats should seek an eastern city, and Particularly New York, than there was why the republicans should have done #0, for tho former depend for election upon the metropolis and the states surrounding it, with Indiana and the solid south; whereas the republicans Go not absolutely need the votes of New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and the south, pro- vided they hold their usual strongholds. But as presertt indications favor the democrats in the old central states lying around New York city many of that party wish the convention to be held in the northwest, where the prospect is considerea excellent, and the claims of Detroit are accordingly presented with much confi- dence. Other points in the great west will probably be urged before the committee and the whole subject will be canvassed, as it was by the republican committee, with an eye Bingie to the greatest advantage to be ob- se ee eS Why should the Thanksgiving of the poor be Several of the churches have called for contributions which are to be ultimately applied to the comfort of those who of them- selves could hardly be otherwise than comfort- less. These contributions are to be delivered atthe respective places of worship this even- ing, and for two or three hours the decoratively inclined will toil to produce artistic effects with such raw material as may make its appearance. ‘The altars will be heaped around with solid foundations of groceries and old clothing, and on these eubstantials will be erectet h’shpgr- mructure of canned good, thtkey'dind’ chi¢! ‘To-morrow morning the, pars, whose gentr- osity is worthy of all praise and emulation, will Givide their attention between the service and the display of ancient clothing and modern food. Mesnwhile the dinnerless poor are awaiting with that patience born of long suffering the wherewithal out of which to construct their Thanksgiving—for, as with their more fortunste fellow beings, ‘Thanksgiving and plenty to eat are intimately associated. Later in the day the good things will be taken from the altars and distributed, so that by the latter part of the evening or early on Friday the fortunate recipients of edi- bie benefactions may have reason for rejoicing. Those who are awarded clothing may be glad an hour or two sooner. But why not distribute the charity tonight or early tomorrow morning? ——__+s The timely announcement of Supervising Architect Edbrooke in yesterday's Stan that Washington's new post office could and would be of granite and of attractive architecture makes a conspicnous addition to the list of ‘things for which the people of Washington are to be thankful in this appropriate season. Much in this matter has depended and still de- pends upon the vigor, taste and sound judg- ment of Mr. Edbrooke. He has proved himself so far the right man in the right place. He has the opportunity not only to adorn and materially benefit the capital, but to erect in ‘the new post office building a monument upon the republic's historic parade street, which cannot be hid, to his own ability and energy. Evidently he bas an intelligent appreciation both of this opportunity and of the correspond- ing duty and responsibility that rest upou him. Washington is profoundly gratefal to be re- lieved of uneasiness concerning the character of its post office building, and to know that the structure will adorn, instead of disfiguring Pennsylvania avenue. +2 ‘The death of the Earl of Lytton, British am- baseador to France, an author of reputation under the pseudonym of “Owen Meredith,” and son of the more famous novelist and dramatist, Bulwer Lytton, removes not merely 8 British diplomatist of high rank, but one who entered upon bis diplomatic career in this republic. From 1849 to 1852 he was an attache of the British legation in Washington, and his death, therefore, is personally regretted by some of our older citizens as well as by many of the younger who have been charmed by his poetry. As viceroy at the time Queen Victoria was proclaimed at Delhi as Empress of India he filled the role of statesman in addition to the others graced by him before and after. ee Brazil is quiet. The states bave apparently approved the action of the Rio de Janeiro Janta in deposing Fonseca, and the disinter- ested public appear to look to the new presi- dent and the old congress to give guarantees of continued peace. It is to be noticed in this connection that the Portuguese, who form the dominant element, are s more conservative people than the Spaniards or the mixed races, having a Spanish and Indian origin, that sur- round the republic on every side except toward ‘the ocean. —— ‘The dismantled and half-destroyed wreck of ‘the steamer W. W. Corcoran almost set fire to the Long bridge on Monday afternoon. For tany years the old Mount Vernon boat has done good service, but the debt of gratitude on the part of this city would hatgxegched gigan-.| tie proportions bad the bridge bopn Itivaconstant souree of danges and. ite ne moval would have glorified ‘the Corcoran’s memory for ail time. geben: +2 ‘The details of the recent earthquakein Japan show that the distarbance wes on @ scale and that the resulting catastrophe was fall of horrors.
