WHAT GOES ON AT INDEANAPOLIS. Convention of the National Repub- lican League. FLORENCE STILL IMPROVES. ALLIANCE MEN COMMITTED, Congressmen Instructed Not to Enter the Party Speakership Caucuses. Ixpraxaroris, Nov. 19.—Taken as a whole, the alliance has not been very successful in preserving the secrecy of its proceed- ings, but one point in yesterday's pro- ceedings escaped the press until an early hour this morning. That point was the committal of the supreme coun- cil to the third party movement. This came about through the adoption of a resolution of- fered by Jerry Simpson instructing alliance members of Congress not to enter the party cauenses, Col. Livingstone of Georgia protested against its adoption. saying he was elected as a demo- crat and proposed to act with that party whether the alliance liked it or not. Among a mass of minor resolutions pre- sented there came up something in the way of a fire brand in a series of resolutions offered by I. M. Branch, delegate-at-large from Georgia. They were ‘political in their nature and were the result of much consultation among certain of the alliance leaders op toLivingstone. These resglutionsdeclared that a large number of men had been elected to Congress by alliance votes and demanded that they support no man for Speaker who would not first declare for the ulliance platform. They further declared it the sense of the body that these Congressmen should nominate one of their own number for the spcakership andstick to him. They further admonished alliance men throughout the country to beware of commit- ting themselves to any party in such a manner as to interfere with their freedom of political action or of taking any position in favor of men oF parties not in ayimpathy with alliance prin- ciples. When they were introduced they were loudly cheered by the supporters of Polk. Mr. Branch asked that they be referred to the committee on demands, evidently knowing what the make up of that committee would be. Another more zealous delegate moved a sus pension of the rules in order to put the resolu- tions on their passage. Livingstone opposed this in a very vehement speech, denouncing itos a third party scheme, and said it was inspired largely by’ personal enmity against himself. The friends of the resolution believed that they could pass it, bat aiter a little consultation asked that it be re- ferred to the committee on demands. President Polk so referred it, and when the committees were announced at 6 o'clock it be- came evident that this committee, with Weaver of Iowa at the head’of it, was packed with radi- cals. It will undoubtedly report favorably upon the resolutions. An effort to make the platform of the alliance more radical on the subject of govern ownership of the railroads and telegraph lin: was made and created something of » furore Rt I. M. Branch, delegate-at-large from Georgia, introduced a resolution which recited ‘the fact that the alliance had at St Louis, in December. 1889, to- gether with the Knights ot Labor, adopted a resolution demanding that the means of trans- portation and communication—the railroads and telegraphs—be operated by the Unit States government, and that this resolution had been changed at Ocala last year. It then de- clares that inasmuch as the Knights of Labor had not consented to any change of the de- mands for government ownership, the alli- ance would restore this pla to ite platform. The point of this is that this resoiution demands complete ownership, while the Ocala demand is for par- tial control, with contingent ownership if sim- ly control is deemed impractical. This reso- lution went to the committee on legislative de- mands, and the prospects are that it will be favorably reported upon. fas ot <i FLORENCE SLIGHTLY BETTER. | democrat, receiving 15, SENATOR GIBSON. Cities That Are Anxious to Receive National MINNEAPOLIS, PITTSBURG, OMAMA, CINCINRATE, NEW YORK, SAN FRANCISCO TO BE ACTIVELY REP- RESENTED BEFORE THE NATIONAL COMMITTER NEXT WEEK—CMICAGO MAY GET IT AFTER ALZe The republican national convention of 18%ly if those who ought to know are to be believed, will be held in Minneapolis, San Pranciseo, Pittebarg, Omaha, Chicago, Cincinnati, Detrott and New York. Just how it is going to be done no one can tell, but that seems to be the program just now in spite of the fect that sectional difticultics must necessarily obstruct. None of the cities that are anxious to bave the convention located in their midst are es yet officially reprose but there are any num- ber of ‘people in town who seem to be ed in boommg one place or the other. ‘On Monday the republican national commit tee meets at the Arlington Hotel, and when it assembles it will find iteelf besciged by com- Mittees from the cities mentioned. These sev- eral committees have engaged headquarters tn the Arlington, and by Saturday it i# expected that each organization will in thorough working order. Omaha will be here this evening with its shirt sleeves rolled up, £0 to spenk, and for a while the Nebraska city will have no active a but when the Minneapolitans and the Cinein- | natians and the Pittsburgers and Now Yorkers and Michiganders and the folks from "Frisco arrive there will be-real war. A DRLIEF as To A great many people are inclined to the be- lief tha: Chiengo will_get the convention with- out much trouble, although the windy city is tmaking « fight ‘for it. The argument that Chicago is the only city thet can easily accom- weight, modate the crowd has a good deal and this combincd with its universal accessi- bihity is being used with effect. So As the general impression goes Minne polis appears to have the present. advantage. Ihe northwest is for Minneapolis and the northwest is not to be sneezed at in theese latter days. Then Minneapolis has claims of its own, and more than that it will, for this occasion only, have such assistance as St. Paul can render. The two cities are practically one; there seems to be ample hotel accommodation; and the railroad facilities are of a high order. CLAIMS OF ErTTeBURa. Pittsburg bases its claim principally upon the historical fact that it was the birthplace of the republican party. Some of the Pennsyl- vanians say that the republican party needs to be born again and they suggest that Pittsburg outranks all competi- tors as a An objection to ¥ Supporters of Presi- dent Harrison, who have it that Pittsburg ts « big Blaine town. ‘ittsburg repubheans are more or less divided on questions of party policy, but even Senator Quay and Chris. jagee would join hands as to J CINCINNATI'S CHANCES. Cincinnati's chances are not believed to be too bright. The great northwest wants that convention as far away from Ohio as possible, for Mekinley influences are dreaded. As matter of fact Cincinnati is a Blaine strong- hold, but the Dakota, Montana, Iowa, and Pacific ‘const farmers are fearful of anything that savors of McKinley, and as the major has just been elected gov- ernor of Buckeyedom the combination cannot easily be explained away, Sun Francisco ix regarded as being juste trifle too far away, although the newspaper correspondents favor it. The trip could bardly fail to be plenscat, bat as a business venture it would be weak, due to the limted telegraphic facilities. “‘Twe ndred correspond- ents would swamp the few wires in fifteen min- utes, and iu less than half an hour the tele- graph companies would be three days behind im their work.
