2 POTOMAC CORPS’ CELEBRATION. ‘The Banquet and Keception at Willard’s Last Night. THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY MADE MEMORABLE BY & DELIGHTFUL = ENTERTAINMENT — DISTIN- GUISHED MEN AND WOMEN AS GUFSTS—A BAN- QUET, WITH SOME INTERESTING syEECHES. Potomac Relief Corps was five years old yesterday and celebrated its birthday with as much enthusiasm as if its record of usefulness had extended throughout a period five times as long. Last night at Willard’s it was both host and hostess of a large and brilliant reception, when hundreds of the friends of the members had the opportunity to mect at » social re- mion. Later on about 300 sat about the ban- quet table. While the reception was held in theithree large parlors, the company overflowed intothe hall, so that practically all that part of the house seemed given up to the pleasure of the occasion. Nearly every man and woman present wore one or more glittering badges telling the story of their connection with the Various organisstons of the G. A. It The line of ladies, commencing with Mrs. Nellie Prentice, the president of the corps, pre- sented @ smiling and unbroken column and stretched through thetwo rooms. Mr. D. W. Houghton at the top of the column played that most acceptable part of guide, philoso- pher and friend, and it was under his dircetion that new arrivals found themze!ves in line, close enough for Miss liclen Holmes, the secr tary of the corps, to present them to Mra. Prentice. In turn the latter intr: ced en rson to Mrs. Palmer, wife of the commander- in-chief, a handsome, smiling matron, who seemed thoroughly to enjoy the occa: in vivid contrast to ier brunette coloring was the WANTED—HELP. Maban’s plan of giving each light of the light house establishment a numerical distin- guishing characteristic, the light house board bas ordered the manufacture in France of 4 fourth order finshing lens No. 23 for trial at Kobbin’s Reef, New York harbor. The lens will cost about 36,000, and the experiments will dewonstrate whether numerical flasbing sigual lights can be substituted for the present system of lights. Capt. Makan’s plan is to give each light a separate and distinct number, and to have that number communicated to the mariner by a sys- tem of short and long flashes. ‘Ihe off-shore lights are to be white and the in-suore lights are to possess an element of red. The main purpose of the system is to make each light teil its exact ioeation, and to prevent all possibility of its being mistaken for any other light. ——o+—_—___ The National Grange. on of the Na- tional Grange, Patrons of Husbandry, is being held in the city of Springfield, Onio, this week. At the biennial election of officers, which oc- eurred on Tuesday, Dr. Jobn Trimble of Georgetown, D. C., was re-elected national see retary and Mortimer Whitehead was re-elected aslecturer. Dr. Trimble was one of the seven “founders” of the grange, which Imd its birth im this city in the year ‘1366. Mr. William Saunders of the Uniied States Department of Agriculture being its first national president or master. —_—— ‘The Princeton Evangelists. ‘The ¥. M. C. A. gymnasium presented a lively Beene yesterday, as between 200 and 300 boys ¢rowded in to listen to the Princeton student evangelixts, Pierson and Goldsbury, talk and sing the gospel. It was a crowd of boys full of fe and bubbling ever in a place that their minds coupled with double-somersaalts, damb- bells, Indian clubs, tug of war, &c., more than religious services. A few hearty songs, in which all could join, gave a way of escape to the pent up vitality, and as Kev. W. A. Bartlett, D. D.. of New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, made the opening prayer in language that the youngest could appreciate the boys were in harmouy with the service. Goldsbury told them some things about his brother Joe that kept them inter- sted and led up to.Picrson's ilusteated talk, for which the boys were eager. ‘The speaker gave the boys a chence to answer plenty of wuestions, and they displayed much thought in Heir ‘replies. One Luadred and forty of the boys signed cards stating their desire to live Christian lives. The local association is behind the times in not having a boys’ depart- ment. Secretary Pugh says that will be one of the features of the new building. The meeting last night continued in interest, and more lin- gered to be talked to than ut any of the pre- vious meetings. Mise Ruth ‘i hompson sing tonight. Mr. W. A.
