Aletter from the Rev. John C. Collins, secretary and treasurer of the associa- tion, says of the convention work brings together a great company of Christians, both those of large influence, promi- nent pastors and others, and the young humble workers, such as those in the Christian Endeavor societies. ‘The prominent leaders in Christian work see in the stories of labor which are told how men of no very great talents are used, and they get a great many hints in the direction of simplicity and earnestness by which their future life work can be largely aided and strengthened, and the bumble workers and beginners are very much encouraged by seeing how wonderfully men of no very great talents have been used in doing good. For example, Col. Clarke of Chicago, who was an ordinary business man, started in with « little mix sion some thirteen or fourteen years ago in oue of the worst sections of Chicago. He had bad no experience then, and with his wife he simply opened a little room and set to work trying to do good to people by telling the story of the gospel night after night, and during the day tine ho carried on bis regular bustheec During these thirteen or fourteen years there have been from 30,000 to 40,000 professed con- versions through that man’s work. Of course, allof them have not been truly reclaimed, but thousands and thousands of men and women of the most abandoned character have been rescued to lives of good citizenship and Chris- tian manhood. “When a humble young worker or business man who wants todo good hears the story of such a work as that feels encouraged and strengthened, but there are a thousand and one suggestions which come through such a convention which are taken up in one form or another by workers present and put into opera- tion. when in London last June Molba was actually almost penniless, her husband having taken from her what money she had. At that time she was s placed in possession of funds by friends who had every reason to believe that the Due d'Orleans was merely one of many harmless adiairers. A London correspondent, however, says that Madame Molba actually loves and is loved by the noble Frenchman. ‘The couple have been prudent, waiting in the confident hope that Capt. Armstrong, the husband, wouid sooner or later be caught in adultery, an offense, which, coupled with proverbial crucity, would justify divorce. Sir Augustus Harris has offered Madame Molba 1,000 a night to sing next season, but the lady hus declined to consider the proposi- tion unless her appearances are confined to two unconsecutive nights a week, she reserving all rights for private concerts and other gugements, There isa strong syndicate hind the soprane, and in the event of her be- ing unable to arrange with Sir Angustus the will probably settle on an independent season. This will in all probability be done shouid Sir Angustus Harrison not grant the lady terms vimilar to those which were granted her at the Paris opera last spring. Manager Bertrand claims that Madame Molba is fully up to Patti's recent work. It is be- lieved that the American tour proposed for Madame Motba at the rate of 4,000 per night hue been abandoned. paar ae ee Mesers. Potter and French Arrested.
