THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: ‘WEDNESDAY... perganent circul:tion in W times larzer that of uny other pape! in the city. As a local NEWS paper and Advertising Medinm it has no competitor. —— ‘The most interesting series of state elections ever held on the continent ends without that radical change of sentiment all along the line which was expected by some sanguine people. Neither party has apparently gained #o muck a8 to indicate that it is bound to gain more in the presidential clection, and neither party has gained enough to relieve it from anxiety as to the future. The loss of New York or Ohio to ‘the party normally its master would have put enlculaticns awry. But Ohio gives s decided majority to the republicans and New York to tae democrats. Both organizations have ground for rejoicing that they have beld their own in their ordinary strongholds. Both republi- cans ard demeccrats hoped to d6 consider- sbir more than they succeeded in doing. Securing the election of Maj. McKinley in place of Gov. Campbell in the buckeye state, with a republican legislature instead of a democratic legislature, the Ohio republicans have really gained important advantages; but not to have done so would have been well nigh ruinous. The Pennsylvania republicans redeem their state by about the usual majority in off years, which is somewhat better than was expected by impartial —calcu- lator The democrats in holding the governorship of Massachusetts achieve one of the points that was coveted by them. ‘The result was iargely due to the personal pop- ularity and ability of their leader. The same may be said of Iowa, where anti-prohibition sen- timent also contributed to democratic success. ‘hese revuits seem to teach that the parties are so nearly equal in powcrand promise that no extreme policy by either can beadopted with safety. What the republicans recover in two or threa states is at least counterbalanced by what the democrats recover in prestige in New York and secure a second time in succes- sion in Massachusetts and lowa. An important movement is on foot to remove the theological seminary of the Lutheran church from Gettysburg to Washington or some other city. The mecting held here last night in aid of the removal to this city was well attended by leading men from the different states and a momentum given to removal to the capital. The board of directors having decided to remove the chief seminary of the Lutherans to some mere desirable place than ita present location, the claims of Washington are strongest of any American city, because, as Rev. Dr. Butler says, the seminary would be nationalized by coming to the capital and the church itself unified thereby. By a sale of the present historic buildings and grounds to the state of Pennsylvania or to the general gov- ernment, it is said, the expenses incurred by the removal would be more than paid. ‘The meeting was unanimous in deciding that ‘Washington was the proper place for the semi- nary, and a strong ccmmittce of seven was ap- pointed to take the necessary steps to secure the desired object and provide ways and mears. This movement is of more than denominational importance. As the Catholies, Methodists and Baptists are developing educational head- quarters at the nation’s capital, so it is desir able to have the Lutherans and other church bodies establish here their seminaries. The incomparable aivantages of Washington as the educational center of the western hemisphere need not be specifically pointed out. The gov- ernment buildings. libraries, museums, scien- tific collections and the great academy of gov- ernment in all its branches, that enrich ‘Washington, to say nothing of the delightful physical surroundingsand historic associations of the capital, prevent any just comparison be- ‘tween it and any other city. Low tariff with an anti-prohibition attach- ‘ent came out ahead in Iowa. Low tariff with an honest money attachment, plus Gov. Russell's personal popularity, won in Massachusetts. Low tariff with a free-coinage attachment was smashed in Obic. The democrats won on a sound-money plank in New York. In general results the free-coinage democrats aye under- neath, while Cleveiand and tariff reform show up on top of the democratic heap. Among the republicans the boom for McKinley and pro- tection given by Ohio is not sustained by the other contested states, except Pennsylvania, “Hamlet” with the melancholy Dane omitted from the cast would be no more odd than was the reception which Jersey City Methodists tendered to two delegates to the Ecumenical Conference—Rev. William Arthur and Rev. Dr. Evans. Both gentlemen were ill and absent, but the reception went right along. There were speeches and refreshments, but those who were being received, so to speak, were absent. If the Chitean statesmen who are now en- Gaged in trying to discover some safe way of expressing their contempt for the United States would only utilize their tremendous energies in some wage-earning capacity they might help Iowa shows a tendency to step out of the sepublican column, for she gives the democrats more than sho gute them the last time, when the democrats got the governor. Next she will be claiming the vice presidential, or perhaps even ‘the presidential, nomination as a reward for her new and vigorous democracy. Everywhere it was tried yesterday the Aus tralian ballot proved a success. Not only were the elections where it was used quiet, but they ‘were more nearly konest verdicts of the popu- lar jury. It ougitt not to be long before every state im the Union has a secret, honest ballot. Reading the election returns by the light of the campaign cfforts made by the two political parties in New York, one would think that the people im the rural parts of the state rather Like to be ruled by the Tammany tiger, and that the people of the city are mighty glad the World's fair went to Chicago. es “Tae Thanksgiving proclamation is now due.” Signed, Wm.
