Many Delightful Kuns or the Pleasant Mvoalight Nights, SEVERAL EXCTRSTONS BY THE NOMAD CLUB—wovE- MENTS OF THE COLUMBIAS AND ARLINGTONS—A CLUB MOUSE AT MT. PLEASANT —rite APOSTLES OF GOOD ROADS SHOULD BE THE WAEELMEN. Bicyclists took advantage of the bright moon- light nights Inst week and a number of pretty and interesting runs were made. Wednesday night the Nomad Club weat to Takome Park, where their members were handsomely enter- tained by Miss McPherson, who was assisted by her friend, Miss Bailey. Friday night a dozen members of the elub rode through Georgetown and traveled the toad along Rock creek, returning by way of the Massachusetts avenge extension Saturday night the club enjey+d one of the prettiest runs of the season. The night was as bright as a full moon could make it and the trip selected was up the Conduit road as far as fohn's brid othe Indies prepared the lunch, which wa: taken on the wheels, and the ride as far as “Uncle Jones’ " cabin was made without inter- ruption. Here the wheels were stacked andthe and gentlemen took suiemn possession of the cabin beside the road. LUNCH AT UNCLE JONES’ CABIN. “Uncle Jones” was aroused from hi fal slamber and ina fow minutes » volume of smoke pouring from the chimney together with the smell of coffee made it apparent that scme- thing was going on in the kitchen, where Presi- Gent Smith was found with » small penkuife trying to open some cans of potted goods, and anty Jones” was poking the fire to hasten the preparation of the coffee. Lunch was id on a table in the front room, and while is rough spread was being enjoyed Sandoe ed a mouth organ, to which music “Uncle Jonze" youngest son, Stores, gave an. exhib. tion of how to shake his foot in a scientitic manner. From there the two dozen Nomads rode to Cabin John bridge and returned home in good seaso: hursday night the Columbia Club rode ww Brookland and Sunday they went to Brookville via Brightwood and the 7th street pike and enjoyed dinner at Mrs. Miller's. ‘The Arlington Ciub has added a number of new members to ite rolls recently, and much enthusiasm shown by the members, although Capt. Sandoe finds it difficult to get many of the boys oat on the Sunday morningrans Last Sunday the run wae made to the Great Falls, where those who attended spent an enjoyable time gathering chestnuts. On the return trip Rawlins lost bis tire and there was a slight collision, but no one was burt. The boys returned home in time to keep their Sunday evoning engagements. A CLUB MOUSE AT DT. PLEASANT. The Columbias are elated over their success in the movement toward securing the erection of anew club house in Mt Pleasant. The work on the new building will begin in about a month’s time and the house will, in all prob- ability, be ready for occupancy carly in the "Two weeks from now the Columbias will visit Baltimore as guests of the Chesapeake Club of that city, who have arranged a country run for their guests. a ‘Thursday night the club will give a reception and “smoker” to a number of their bicycle friends at the club house and during the even- ing some of the musical talent of the club will WANTED-—HELP. THE APOSTLES OF Goop RoADS. “Wheelmen should be the apostles of good roads, not for their own use simply, but on the broad ground of political economy,” says the LAW. Bulletin. “They must remind the tax- payer that the highway tax, his share of which may be #1, will save him $10 in repairs on wear tear to carriages and horses, provided ways that the taxso paid by him is properly expended im constructing good roads and in them in proper repair after they are baile ‘We must show that while the first cost road 1s large, it costs less in a series pe to have good roads than it does to have poor ones. A poor road is lifte a poor wheel; you may get it cheaply, but the repairs will Faise its cost above that of the best. More wheelmen will make better roads and better Toads will make more wheelmen.” = oe A Washington policeman, speaking is first and last experience riding a bicycle, says: ‘I left the corner of Pennsylvania avenue and 12th street and started toward the Capitol. The Peace monument looked like a piece of stone, but as I neared it it grew gradually larger until it spread across the entire width of the avenue and made it impossible for me to get around it. He did not mention how much it cost to have the wheel repaired. ‘THE INTERNATIONAL RACE. ‘The six-day international bicycle race is now being held in Madison Square Garden, New York city, and among the competitors are riders from England, France, Canada, Scot- land, Germany and Australia. ‘The champion bicyclists of England, Kichard Howell, Win. Wood, Arthur and Alfred Robb, Geo. E:dlin, oa Lamb, and M. L. O'Flannagan, the Irish have arrived to take part in therace. iereutands tata tenho oak to Springtield to do their training. Mr. Moore, an unattached wheelman, was at- tached Sunday evening by Policeman Cooney because be had no light on bis bicycle. He rode to the Great Fulls in the morning. but, unlike the wise virgins, he had not enough oil to keep his lamp burning, and consequently his ride was interrupted. He had a V, which he left as collateral, and the next morning he appeared before Judge Kimball and explained how he burned his oil on the road when the moon lighted the road and made it as bright as day. Judge Kimball thought the excuse wasa good one and ordered the return of the collateral. stonstietoetecteate THE PAWNEROKER LAW. A Seetion About Which Little is Known—It Benefits the Pawner. Oficer Proctor, who was recently promoted from the ranks and made a member of the de- tective corps, has been put in charge of the work of inspecting pawnshops. Detective Biock, speaking of the law, said there is a sec- tion of the law which is generally overlooked by persons pawning or pledging articles. The law, he said, provides that pledges must be kept one year unlese by consent in writing of the pawner, and all sales are to be made after six days’ notice in the daily newspapers. Sec- tio 0 is the one particularly referred to by the officer and it provides: “That the surplus money, if any, arising from any such sale, after deducting the amount of the loan, the ‘interest then due on the same and the expenses of the advertisement and sale, shall be paid over by the pawnbroker to the Person who would be entitled to redeem the ige in case no such sale had taken place.” Under this section, said the Ofticer, many Persons are entitled to remittances, but they are probably not aware of it. He said he had required the auctioneers to keep records of talee so that there could be no’ misiake about the matter. ae ‘The Gelden Cross. At the Ist meeting of St. John’s Com- mandery, No. $2,U. 0.
