ae . THE EV. ENING STAR: WASHIN CURRENT POLITICAL TOPICS. John B. Robinson Chosen President of the Pennsylvania Republican Clubs. The Penasylvania league of republicun clubs was in session all day yesterday at Xeranton. ‘The committee on resolutions delayed the work ‘of the convention for several houre. The con- test for the presidency was an interesting one. Wm. €. Moreland of Allegheny named John Dulzell One of his remarks was that the people have grown tired of the declaration that the party is greater than the man. “Men are resolving.” said he. “on bold and independent epublicanism. If vietory comes in P'ennsyl- vania this year the issue will be largely de- cided by this convention. If from selfish ambition we shall permit oar whole course to be decited and colored by a few, the party will eventually arise in ite might and crush out the futile efforts of these few. If seltish aims give way to party interests, then there may be « brilliant future for the republicans of Penn- sylvania. Men should be named who are sound for the party, and not the puppets of any men. In ranting Mr. Dalzell it wax my honor t» nominate » man who was easily among the best a ebief of all. Col. Stratton of Clarion seconded the nomi- nation of Mr. Dalze! nd a colored delegate named Foster of Aliegheny also seconded the nomination, W. L Schaffer of Delaware nominated Hon. Joba B. Robinson of Media. The presence of #o many earnest republicans in the convention, he said, proved that the party again presented ited front. He predicted that with such » Gregg and Morrison would not only wi th the “white-plumed knight” of Maine but, to lead, the republicans would win in 1892. In nominating Jack Kolinson he named a man who was not only # republican in victory, but @ | republican in defeat. Mr. Detwiler of Dauphin | seconde] the nowinstion of Mr. Kebinson. | Gen. J.P. 8 Gobin of Lebanon nominated Maj. Everett Warren of Scranton. He made a plea for harmonious action and said that Maj. Wctsen was the only man who could bring unity to the party. W. Gaylord Thomas of Lackawanna secon:led this nomination. Reeder's committee on platform then reported. With the platform came a resolution recommending that all regular clubs be admat- ted, whether their dues paid before July 16 oF not. This would bring im about forty ad- ditional clubs ali for Daizell Mr. Detwiler of Dauphin immediately moved to lay the resolut he table. On this mo- tion Mr. Magee demanded @ roll call, saying that a#s republican he wanted to vote on this gag motion. The platform was adopted, Lut the resolution admituog additional clubs was lost by a vote of 128 to 10. The Warren men voted with the Daizell me ROBINSON ELECTED. Mr. Robinson was elected on the firet ballct. ‘The vote was: Robinson, 141; Dalzell, 42; War- ren, 15. Williamsport was selected as the neat place of meeting. Mr. Dalzel! moved to make the election nnan- imous, and this was seconded by Mr. Chris Magee and Maj. Warren. Mr. Dulveil was at onee calied to the platform and unde a long speech. He said that he accepted the isnes of war. He was heartily for Mr. Kobinvon and was satintied with the result, He made a brilliant plea for the republican state ticket and seathingly ridiculed the democratic plat- form. Senator Robinson was then escorted to the chair, and in bis specch of thanks f referred to the days when he and M attended the same college. He would be pr he said, to follow the wise counsels of Senator in the incoming Congress when they eat together in that hopeless minority. E'S. Randolph of Allegheny wee elected sce- retary, James P. Burke of the same county re- tiring in his favor. Mablon H. Young of Phil- adelphia was elected treasnrer. William Linn of Phiwieiphia was appointed corresponding secretary. ' Wallace Cartcr and Prank Jones of Philadelphia were chosen vice presidents, William H. MeGleary of Allegheny and Capt. | senate for not was driven to the grounds of the Duchess County Agricultural Society, where bi livered an agricultural address before 30,000 people. From 5 to 7 o'clock the governor was ten:lered a reception at the residence of Chief Jastice Bar of the supreme court, which was attended by about of the citizens, leading politicians and professional men, and was the most brilliant social event Pough- keepsie has known for along time. Then the governor was driven to the Duchess Clnb, where he was serenaded by the Twenty-first Kegiment Bard. At7.30 he mounted an improvised platform | in front of the elub house and spoke to the large Sa _ gathered. — said in ning would not open the campaign bya set epecch, se he hed orf inally intended, but styled inis remarks “a. shot or two.” | He said: “The democratic party enters th campaign with feelings of confidence in the result. New York i# a democratic state. Let me call your attention to the fact that in state issues the party has lost the state but once in nine or ten years. The democratic party has be ne: ues to set. We started where wi were in 1884, and in 1388. In 1888 we set the flag of tariff reform upon our shoulders and there we shall carry it on to victory. If the re- publicans are tired of the issue they can aban- don it; we shall carry it through to the end.” ‘The speaker denounced the McKinley biil, which, he was framed to take money from to aid mo: and whieh, has not “It bas not raised wages and the country is made to suffer from overtaxation under this taxation. The democratic party be- lieves the place for the surplus to be in the ts of the . not in the government treasury. [Applause.] The republicans said a year ago that we could not secure control of the legislature. The result was a democratic legislature on joint ballot, which gave the low- est tax levy in thirty-six years, and gave also the shortest legislative session in seventeen years. The governor condemned the republican the bill to redistriet the state after the last census. He pronounced the republican platform on high license a “delu- sion and a snare.” While the platform de- clared in favor of local option, both houses of the legislature failed two years ago to pass the bill in accordance with their platform. The slemoerate believe that all revenues, whether calied taxes or excise feew, should belong to the locality where collected auc uot go to the state to be distributed among counties having no licenses. He charged New York's lose of the worlds fair to the interference of 4 faction in the republican senate with the appointment of the commission by Mayor Grant cf New York city. “The chief conxpirstore were T. C. Platt and his candidate for gevernor, J. Sloat Fassett, and the candidate cannot escape the responsi bility of his act.” The names of Flower and Sheehan were Yociferously applauded when mentioned by the governor. At the conclusion of bis speech Gov. Hill left for Albany. Preparing for Republican Campaign in Maryland Republicans from all sections of Maryland gathered in force at their headquarters in Bal- tumore yesterday to discuss plans and methods of condneting the statecampaigr. The county men report a healthy outlook for the republican ticket everywhere. The state ticket, they sa; is giving general satisfection. Chairman C baugh will name a committee to assist him in aday or two and prepare for the opening. It WANTED—HELP. ‘ % — ff GTON. D.c. tas. SEPTEMBER 24. 1891. > WANTED. SITUATIONS.
