An altercation occurred last night near the Virginia Midland depot between John Nelson, a brickmaker who resides on South et street, and John Walker, ear inspectar. Nel- son struck Walker over the head with a bar of iron, injuring him seriously. Walker was taken in a carriage to his home on Franklin street and Nelson was arrested and this morn- ing wes held by the mayor to await the result of Walker's injuries. HELD TO BAIL. John Ambler Smith of Washington, formerly ‘a representative in Congress, visited this city yesterday afternoon as attorney of Caddic Crossman, who, after the shooting of George S. William Walter Phelps, the American min- ister. in an interview with the correspondent cf the Associated Press inrogard to the removal of the embargo on American pork, said: “Lam very glad it is through. “It has been » harder struggle to me than any one thing. Why, I began it ten years ago at Vienna. It seems as if it were but yesterday that I read to Count Kalnoky the trenchant sentences in which Secretary Blaine protested against the reasons which Austria gave for excluding Ame1- ican pork. That was » great dispatch of Blaine's, and it found a noble echo ten years afterward in Whitelaw Reid’s arraignment of French folly in pursuing the same policy. The enemies of the American never rallied against Reid's statement that in France mor People were killed by lightning than by tri- chine. “But in Germany the case was different. Here people ate pork raw, and therein lies the danger. On that account the German govern- ment is very careful in examining even Gor- man pork, and it was only fair thatit should in- sist upon a careful inspection of our pork. Ger- many promised all along that when this was done our pork should be let in, and it has kept its promise. “On July 6 I addressed the foreign affice, saying that Secretary Rusk’s examination was forceand that by September 1 the pork in- ted would be ready for examination. I asked at that date the embargo should be re- moved. Baron Marschau, secretary of foreign affairs, informed me September 3 that a decree to that effect was signed. One could not ask much betier treatment than that. “Iam especially glad that I insisted on the Policy of not using threats against Germany. e Germans will not take threats. So, while Iwas well aware that every official, from the chancellor down, knew of the reserve powers of retaliation and that both President Harrison and Secretary Blaine were the men who had the nerve to use these powers, I’ never either for- mally or informally referred to such a possi- THE GRIP’S AFTER EFFECTS Why You Do Not Get Back Your.
