- THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. D.C. SATURDAY. AUGUST 22, 1891—SIXTEEN PAGES. [AMP W. G. MOORE. IN CAMP AT OCEAN VIEW. ‘The Light Infantry and Corcoran Cadets Enjoying Themselves Hugely. AN OYSTER KOAST AT WHICH EVERY ONE WAS FULLY SUPPIIED-—vist?s FROM VIRGINTA MILITIA OFFICERS—-GOOD WORK ACCOMPLISHED FROM A MILITARY STANDPOINT—SNAP SHOTS. Special Corzeepondence vt The Evening Star. Car Moone, August 21, 1891. There was half a barrel of oysters apiece for the members of the Washington Light I fantry Corps and Corcoran Cadets and their friends at an oyster roast given this morning country place at Willoughby point by Mr. William Pannil. This is to say nothing of clams, sendwiches and liquide. If the men in the commands ‘lo not have dyspepsia from the amoust eaton and honrseness from the amount of cheering dose it will not be through the lack of trying. THE SHUCKERS. An army of shuckers were kept busy at work opening the bi ad for along time an applicant could be found for every offer. Bar- rel after berrel of fine oysters taken directly t hand were poured on the ly oysters can be roasted tive La shells from pans and rex own here © bar EATING OYSTERS. Tables were spread pictureequely under a Wide spreading tree, and ladies and men sat down in ail the uneoutined freedom incidental to an outdoor meal. After every one had eaten as much as it seemed possible for double the number to get away witha number of photo- kraphs were taken and a general good time, in- terrupted only by some showers, indulged in. ‘The boat was photographed in a kingly atti- tuce, raised high i the air on a chair and sur- 1 by a good-looking group. Among the gentlemen present. besides the immediate members of the party. were: S. M. Cooke, G. M. Pollard, Lieut. Waller, Dr. Winslow and Capt, Wright. Willoughby point, on a portion of which the affair was given, is the property of the firm of Smith & Pannil and contains forty- five acres, which have been condemned by the government for nse as a torpedo station. A big hotel is to be built on the point and the Nor- folk and Western road is expected to extend its tracks to the building. The scene of the festiv- ities was pleasantly situated on a green lawn im front of Mr. Pannil’s house, with wide stretches of bay dotted here und there with white sails ag an outlook. Alarge number of men staid at the point enjoying Mr. Pannil’s hospitality until late in the afternoon. THE OCEAN PLEASURE CLUB VISITED. This afternoon, however. Dr. Leach. with a party of ladies and gentlemen, visited the | Ocean Pleasure Club as the guests of Judge | Murdaugh of Portsmouth, a prominent mem- ber of the Order of Elks and one of Virginia’s | The party was entertained with the | ated hospitality which has been | & marked characteristic of the members of this picasantly located club. Among whoze | members who have entertained parties of the command may be mentioned G. W. Jobn- | eon, E. W. Maupin, Mesera Price, Charley | Johnson, Mr. Ryan and Jack Evans. The handsome faces of Maj, Dalton, Capt. | Kelley and Col. Long have been missed from | the camp of lute, all these gentlemen having | found it necessazy to return to Washington. | | CAPTAIN ROSE. Capt. Burton Koss, who is the seniorcaptain of the corps, lias, however, proved once more his capabilities ax un officer by the able man- ner in which be has commanded the battalion. Capt, Kow ig @ soldier in appearance and in methids. He commands effectively, and at the ume time maintains pleasant relations with his officers and men. VISIT FROM VIRGINIA OFFICERS. Last night the band played, which is nothing wnusual for the band to do, bat this time in- stead of playing on the porch or in the dancing pavilion it played at the camp in front of the hikewise nothing unusual, it well, A large crowd of indies and gentlemen stood or sat around listening to the concert and chatting between | times. In the crowd were a number of officers whose faces were unfamiliar to Washingtonians, They were the line and staff officers of the fourth Virginia militia and were visiting the Infantry and Cadets Among the party were Maj. ber prea py Se A Biliscly, — Capt. low < r, Capt "Washington Taylor. Capt. Me? w. Toulins, Capt Hubert, Capt. G.W. Taylor, Capt. HA. Varrall, Lieut. G. A. Brooks, Lieut. Yeatean, Lieut. Dickson, Lieut. Salmonsky, Liept. Lamiter, Lieut. “Hu and Lieut! Owevs. The visit was appreciated by the com- Mani and an entirely successful effort made to see that the visitors enjoyed themselves. ‘The large numer of Washington ladies bere render it almost certain that any visitor will bave a good time. Socially the two commands can- Rot fail to leave a good impression bebind. ‘The camp here ts arranged compactly, and, asic from the fact that some of the tents have Jeake?, no discomfort has been felt from eam ing out The mosquitoes have occasior swooped down on some ugprotceted sentry driven him hastily from his post. In the tents ‘ud . t the hotel there has, however, been little disrorafort from the bird, and it is hoped that the work will keep up. The camp is alighly tothe rear of the hotel, and from the pore & good view of the tented village can be | wards, officer of the day. and Lieut. Melntosh, | feminine beauty to be found around camp. | merchants, thing else ining to matters military, —per- formed the duty with efficiency. Capt. Edwards himself, by his modest de- meanor and soldierly qual- ities, has made himself universally popular during the trip, and the same - may be said of the mem- bers of his command. His experience hn been con- siderable and he has proved his efficiency as an officer by the complete discipline he maintains in bis command. SUCCESSFUL MILITARY WORK. Looked at from # military standpoint the work done here this week by officers aud men of all the companies has been highly successful. In guard mounting and dress parade the im- provement has been marked, while «thorough grasp has been obtained on the new extended order drill, which has been practiced in by all the companies one hour each day. The sim- icity and advantages of the new drill bave become more apparent each day. To the dress parade the added movement of saluting. th colors has greatly added to the beauty‘of thi drill. ‘The movement rounds out the parade and fillsagap long felt. It also affords the | sergeants an opportunity of obtaining practice | in commanding and allows the line officers chance to watch the march of their companies and to notice and correct errors. ‘The diaci- pline has not been severe here and in some cases somewhat lax, but taking all in all the In- fantry and Cadets will return a better lot of soldiers than when they left Washington. COMPANY STREET. ‘The company streets, especially in the even- ings, present generally lonely appearance. Little groups are telling stories, ladies are in- specting the tents and a general air of good fellowship prevails, Many of the tents, which contain generally four men, are arranged highly artistic manner—rugs and curtain re a. common adjunct. The household at each tent is called a mess and the names are generally handsome if not strictly applicable. In D company the Twin mess contains C. E. Kidwell and K.T. Lavender. The Ocean View mess contains Arthur C. Yates, T. L. Davis, W. N. Dorsett, W. J. Hendricks ‘and Spencer Searle. In Beompany’s street the Innocent (?) mess con- sists of C. L- Hoseh, T. N. Wells, A. B. Suit, T. B. Walker and Boyd. Along’ company ‘A's street the Meek Two mess, Sergt. 4A. W. Muzzy and Jos. F. Jamzeck: the Night Liners, E. S. Stokes, S. E. Cole, I. W. Moore 2) mess, G. 8 the am! Company © has the Pharsalia i Phillipe, Corporal Bergman, Private Haltigan, Private’ Engliuh and’ Sergt. Harris; Dupli- cate mess, McClelland Jones, J. Jones, H. C. Givens and C. W. Givens; the Minerva. mess, McDonough, Sergt. Pumphrey, Sergt. Baden, Private Taylor and Private Reinmuth; De- partmental mese, Fairley, Randall, Norris No and Lowe; Early mess, Enders, Kecbner and Landgraff; Temperance mess, Davis, Clarke, ‘Thompson and Lamb. ‘TRE CORCORAN CADETS. Among the Corcoran Cadets the tents are equally well fixed up and in allfthings the Ca- dets are fully keeping up their end of the line. With the Cadets on guard yesterday, Capt. Ed- officer of the guard, several members of the older command had an idea of having fan with the guard. The result, however, was that a number of disappointed fun-reckers found themselves landed in the guard house. The Cadets are a well-drilled company and handle themselves well on drill. They are also good managers in obtaining a good share of the SOLDIERLY FORTITUDE. An instance of the soldierly fortitude of the command was signally shown yesterday at dross | Parade. Sergt. Stith while marching the com- | pany off bad the hard luck to step into a hor- —_— at the time he was saluting the colors. The sergeant's arm, in spite of the swarm of disgusted bees, was kept firmly at the salute, and the march continued as if a big lot of dirks were not being stuck into his anat- omy. Sergts. Thompson and Collins of the Cadets constitute the Two Jonahs mess. ‘The hospital tent has not been overcrowd ed by patients, although Drs. Leach and Luce and Hospital Steward Kenner are constantly on hand waiting patiently for applications. Dr. Luce, besides Boing ‘one of the good-look- ing and rising young physicians of W: - ton, an exceedingly popular man with tke command and also evidently with the feminine portion of the community. CAPTAIN MILLER. Today Capt. Jobn Miller, with a cigar and a firma look, is olicer ef the dey. Try, however, as he does, Capt. Miller, who one of Washington's prominent commission unable to hide the good humor with which he is naturally bubbling over. He may patrol the porch with his back as ht as a ramrod, but little snatches of an especially popular song escape from him as naturally as Tealistieally executed storiesfrom Lieut. Ebert. ‘Tonight the command on invitation from the theater in Norfolk will visit the opera house and listen to Miss Annandale and her company. , Svar suors. ‘The base ball team from the command went to Norfqlk this afternoon t play against the Norfolk team and a good game is expected. ‘The soldier boys are getting their meals at the hotel and are faring well.
