The first two prisoners called in the Police Court this morning were two of Agent Sweeney's bad children, with whom the rep- resentative of the Newsboys’ and Children’s Aid Society has been unable todo anything. One of them was’ Mary Washington, one of the worst colored girls in the city, and the other was John or Jonas Wilson, a fourteen- year-old white Loy. The girl has been arrested many times and caused trouble to the police and work house officials and everybody elve with whom she came in contact. Agent Sweeney tried his best to make a good git! of her, but he was unable to succeed, and @ only thing left was to send her to the work house, and she was sent down for 90 ays. ‘The Wilson boy has a grandmother in an in- sane asylum in North Carolina, The boy came here trom Raleigh some months ago und last might was his fourth ap- pearance at the Newsboys’ Home. Agent Sweeney ld procured him employ- ment before this visit, but the boy preferred to go about the country, and éo “he gave up the position. Mr. Sweeney said he did not think the boy cared to work, but he preferred to beg and leaf about from place to piace. Judge Miller suid he would send him to the — School, where he would be made a man of. To the Editor of Tie Evening Star: Isee a notice in your paper that a company in Kansas City, Mo., have taken a franchise in that city for putting down air conduits for the purpose of supplying air to cool the interior of the houses in summer and heating them in winter. Washington will claim the credit of advancing that idea first. I presented the same identical thing to my attorneys last April. I propored to fill the underground pipes with compressed air and take the air through smaller pipes into the dwellings and business bouses and liberate itin summer to cool them and heat the air in winter to warm them, but the attor- neys thought the idea was entirely too large for prictical use in Washington. My theory for cooling was that the more air is compressed and then liberated the colder it becomge, BJ. ge ‘The New Georgetown Police Station. The object of the meeting is to have the citizens make known their wants to the association so thut the Commissioners may be authoritatively informed of the totel umount desired for street improvements here. There hus in the paxt been somewhat of a lack of interest in the asso- ciation on the part of many citizens, especially those of the south and southwest of Anacostia. The officers and members have been strenu- ously endeavoring to correct this and have been around personally inviting many citizens who heretofore have kept aloof from the meet- ings. One of the principal, improvements sought to be accomplished is the laying of a Belgian block pavement along Harrison street from Bridge and Monroe streets to Minnesota avenue, ‘Thisis the principal street in Ana- cosiia for country travel, and its condition has long been a subject of complaint. Another idea is to have a sewer Inid,to follow the course of the water main to be put down along Har- rison street.
