Joseph Carter, a colored man who lives near 12th and B streets northeast, was the defendant in the ease and Policeman Hendricks was the prinei- pal witness for the prosecution. Last night there was a wedding at Carter's house and about 11:90 o'clock, as the gfests were departing, the policeman and his part- ner stood not far from the honse. Carter, who had recently been arrested by ‘the officer and acquitted of a charge of disor- derly conduct, warned some of his guests not ‘to talk too loud and told them that they might it arrested. Catcaco, July 22.-.A rumor whieh eannot be Verified indicates that some extreme high church Episcopalians in the west intend soon to organize a “Catholic Defense League,” some- what analogous to the English Church Union. It is said that they have been led to contem- plate this step by the rapid growth of liberal views in the Episcopal church, as evidenced by the sympathy felt for the Rev. The countess’ sister called upon us and asked me how I could support a wife on $150 a month. “How are you going to do it?” she asked. Give me & chance, I protested.” “Surely I can learn the typewriter, go in an office, do something.” “But they would not listen to me and took my wife away Count Blucher is as_yet undecided as to his future movements, He is at present staying with his friend, Col. He is coutident that his father will stop hie allowance as soon au he learns of his marriage, and says that he must find some sort of work’ at once. As the young man is fairly well known in Chicago he thinks hs chances of success are brighter there than they would be in the east. ——— sae A¥ OLD WAR SHIP'S END. ‘The Brooklyn Dismantled and Then Burned at Boston. Commander Marthou of the U. 8. 8. Palos, writing to his wife in San Francisco from King Kiang, China, under date of June 8, says the Palos reached there June 6. Learning that a riot had taken place at Wasich the night before he immediately proceeded up the river to that place, where he received information from the Chinese customs clerk of the killing of two men by rioters. Marthou visited Stone, accompanied by guides from Chinese gun boats, and foand the body of Missionary Argent lying where he fell in the gateway at the door of the church, which had been pil- Inged by rioters. The body of Customs House Officer Green was found lying ir the street several squares distant, The body had been covered by mats. Marthou requested per- mission to take the bodies aboard the Palos, but was told that the inquest Lad not beon held. He attended the inquest next morning and deacribes the peculiar methods of Chinese officials in such matters, the inquest being de- voted chiefly to the beating of drums, explo- siou of firecrackers and other ceremcnies The cause of the riot, he states, was the fact that Miesionary Argent ‘had picked up four lit- tle orphans in the country and was conveying them to Hankow in the usual fashion in baskets borne on the shoulders of coolfes. A strect lounger asked one of the coolies whut wax in the basket. The bearer refusing to answer the fellow raised the lid, disclosing the children. The crowd which had gathered raised a cry that the missionaries wore taking tho children away to dig their eyes out, and forthwith | attucked the church, killing Argent and plun- dering the place. Customs Odicer Green was met by the mob and killed while on his way to assist the wives of the missionaries. On the return of the Palus from Wusich to King Kiang word was received of an attempted riot in the Cad Men were landed from the Palos, from the French frigate Inconstant and crman ship Otus to protect the settle- ents, but ut the request of the Chinese gen- eral, who informed the respective consuls that. he would protect the place, the sailor were withdrawn. No outbreak followed, but the American residents withdrew from the city at Lieut. Com. Marthou's suggestion. In closing his letter, he says the Chinese don’t want re- ligion and that he has yet to meet the first Christian Chinese. The natives appear to be troubled wherever the missionaries happen to be stationed, no matter whether church, school or hospital is located, and thero is also a sort of general outbreak against foroigners. Concarn- ing the reports of the likelihood of a riot at Hauke larthou writes that the gun boats Porpoise and Viper are there and assisted by these the large foreign population should de- feud the place withont difticulty. ~ ——ee-—___—__ THE NEBRASKA GOVERNORSHIP.
