Big Crowd. Last night was a parody on “All Quiet Along the Potomac Tonight.” Promptly at midnight all the belis and tin whistles and firecrackers combined to make night hideous, then just as people were dropping off to sleep again they Were treated to the most diabolical serenade imaginable. For wild hilarity and unique and classic music the Chautauqua serenade stands alone. River excurmons on moon- light nights, or nights fondly ex to be it, are a really fashionable form of ‘mild dissipation among the stay-at-bomes, It is gratifying to both man and maiden at pree- ent to get up some pleasure for their friends, for the fact that hospitalities of any sort now are eo much more appreciated and enthused over than during the season, when more peo- ple are in town. Baill the past week hes witnessed a great scattering of the clans to the seashore, the country or the mountain resorts, and most of the travelers are not likely to be seen again Until the middle of September or thereabouts, Next week another detachment of society folks ‘will put up their shutters, so to «peak, and in fresh garments bloom out at their favorite re- sort autil the summer roses bloom snd fade away. Avery large proportion of the readents are finding home #o thoroughly desirable that they have no ides of going away at all, and if this list of names were printed it might be longer than of those who go away for change and relaxation. The knowing ones all say that August and September are the only months when it is really desirable to be out of town— August for rest and September for travel. Mra. and Mise Husk are still here with the Secretary, as they find it quite comfortable in their house, and are in no hurry to leave town They do intend, however, to start shortly for a Visit to their home in Wisconsin, and after that may travel some jn the east. The treasurer and secretary of the association led the procession, which embraced all the male members of the camp, and no one could accuse them of partiality, for they treated almost every tent to the same ear-splitting melody. Most people took it good naturedly, but at one tent some of the serenaders were not quick enongh and succeeded in getting pretty thoroughly drenched by several buckets of water. ‘Today was everything that could be desired take a few shingles. I believe in the Fourth of July, with all its noise and smell of fire- crackers and the rockets which light the heavens at night like stars brought noar. I believe that all over this country this celebration is as dear tothe hearts of the people as it has ever been. We grow more, not less, patriotic as time develops the glories of our institutions. Weare enjoying fruita of independence which those who planted the tree could not in their bravest hopes foresee. Therefore the more reason have we to rejoice and to celebrate.
