Tue District Dest.—The United States treasurer reports that the bonded indebtedness was ©19,500,30 met decrease of 82,606,350 that Mr. Powderly intimates in bis communi- cation that the President will be appealed to in behalf of the knights, THAT LETTER TO JORDAN. The Secretary said to a Star reporter this afternoon that the letter which Jordan claims to have received from him, offering him his old position in the bureau, was not sent by him. He explained the circumstances sur- rounding the writing of this letter as follows: We were discussing the whole case and I had mace a number of propositions to the knights that were not altogether satisfactory. I war willing to appoint the seven men to places in the burewu, with the understanding that Jordan, who is making a good living outside, would not return to work. They wanted more than this. They said that they were afraid that if Jordan wore offered the place with this understanding and it should get to the cars of Meredith he would crow over them and make it his boast that they had been defeated. Iwent so far as to draft a letter to Jordan There had been several papers written during the conterence in about these terms: Places Were to be found for the other six men, and would he accept a position in the bureau. I agreed to give them this letter, to be given to Jordan, if they shculd promise me on their honor as men that they would either return it to me or band me Jordan's declination. ‘This Was to soothe Jordan's feelings, as it were. THE FEDERATION OF LABOR DELEGATES. All this was contingent upon our reaching an agreement. When I showed Devlin and Cava- naugh this letter they declined my terms aud I shoved the letter to one side with the rest of the rejected manuscripts. We were dis cussing the situation further and en- deavoring to find another solution when Treceived the card of the. delegation rep- resenting the Federation of Labor. Leavin, Devlin and Cavanaugh for a few minutes went over to talk to these new comers, who told me some facts that I did not know before. For instance, they informed me that there are now about fifteen apprentices in the bureau waiting for presses, who, under the rules, are entitled to presses ahead of the chance men. This would so reduce the availa- ble new work that the men who are now on the chance roll would not all get presses in the new building. Thus to put on the seven dismissed men would throw out printers who are ahead of them. Aiter further talk on the subject I returned to Dev- lin and Cavanaugh and soon afterward the con- ference was broken up. TRE LETTER STOLEN. The letter to Jordan, though signed, was but 4 draft and was not intended to be sent. if he received it the delegates from the Kuights of Labor must have taken it trom my desk. It had previously been rejected by them. I do not accuse them of stealing the letter, but I do say that the letter should never have gone to Jordan. It was null and void. When I returned to my desk and said good-bye I swept the papers into a drawer, but did’ not notice that this letter waa gone. I have reason to think that they also took the note sent in to me by the delegates of the federation, from which Mr. Powderly gets his information about, the ““Gompers Federa- ” business. The name was put on the card by Mr. Wymre in order to identify the people in my mind. I had a very satisfactory talk last even- ing with Mr. Gompers. “He is a bright, shrewd man and seems to have a very thorough understanding of this case. He said that if he chose he might raise the point that as these seven men had been dis- charged for cause I had no right to reinstate them or reappoint them at all, but in order not to complicate the case he would confine his de- mands to the one matter of having them put back at the foot of the chance rol!. JORDAN THE STUMBLING BLOCK. “You see,” added the Secretary, “Jordan's case was the only stumbling block in the way ofa settlement. I objected to his going back to the bureau because he is so obnoxious to Meredith, and they were rather afraid of his case ‘because he is a saloon keeper— since July 1, 187 ArporxTweNts py THE PrestpeNt.—The Pres- ident today appointed Lewis A. Wonx or tar Gzxenat Laxp Orrice.—A statement prepared at the general land office shows that during the last three months of the fiscal year just closed there were issued 27,298 ricultaral patonts and 778 mineral patents, ‘The number of mineral patents issued. durin the entire year was 2,0i8. ‘The agricultu: tents issued during the last quarter of each of The'tast three yearsare given as follows: In 1866, 3,453; in 1887,",000; in 1888, 10,000. The issue during the last three months was, therefore, nearly equal to the number issued ‘during the nine quarters, as stated above. Persoxat.—John M. Cox of Boston, J. B Davidson of Cincinnati, Thomas Walsh of New against the rules of the Knights of Labor. So it was that I wrote that letter in order to remove the obsta- cle. I depended upon the integrity and honor of Devlin and Cavanaugh to follow out my terms. “That is the trath of the transaction. [have done with the case, I hope, for good and all.” ee a E OVER. Gen. McCook Keports the Peaceful Arrest of Bad Indians. Secretary Proctor this morning received the following telegram, through the adjutant gen- eral, from Brig. Gen. McCook, commanding at Los Angeles, Cal., under date of July 2, 1891: “Following just received and repeated for in- formation of War Department: ‘In camp near Clipalines. Vil iz., July 1, via Hol- brook, July 2. manding general depart- ment of Arizona, Los Angeles, Cal._—Happily we have been able to carry out your instruc- tions to complete success without the loss of a single man. We left this camp at 3 o'clock this morning, and after four hours’ hard marching were in front of the Areibe vil- lnge. After some two hours’ parley we secured the arrest of all the medicine men, privates and soldiers. Chiefs of the hostile faction were ali-right men. Weafterward marched throngh the streets of the pueblo and saw every evi- dence of great preparation for defense. ‘They were only persuaded to surrender peace- tally by the presence of the large com- mand 80 wisely ordered for this duty. They openly admit that our numbers only deterred them from making that tight for which they had made so much preparation. Pursuant to ycur general instroctions I have ordered the prisoners to Fort Wingate via Holbrook and the command, after a four da: Kearn’s canon, to return to their respective posts. The nce of oye has os much good in this part of the territory, and for some time to come little concern need be had on account of further troubles here. These THE MOQUI TROU SEEKING THE RESPONSIBILITY TWENTY PERSONS KILLED. An Express Train Loaded With Sleeping Pas- sengers Kun Into by a Freight. Ravexxa, Onto, July 3.—The worst railroad accident ever occurring in this vicinity hap- pened at $ o'clock this morning. The horrible calamity has fairly appalled the town and neighborhood. Twenty persons were killed and their bodies burned toa crisp. More than that number were injured. The charred re- mains 6f the dead were taken from the ruins of the demolished nger train as fast ax the flames could be subdued by the townspeople, who rallied to the rescue. Such terrible sights as were witnessed in the early morning hours made the people almost sick, An express loaded with sleeping passen- geTs was run into bya freight train while the express was at a standstill in this city. The wreck of the passenger train was terrible and complete. To add to the condition of the unfortunate passengers who were imprisoned in the debris the train caught fire and was consumed. In thie way death fairly swept through the wrecked train. By daylight twenty bodies, nearly all of them charred in a horrible man- ner, Were taken out. Twenty-three mjured had also been rescued. A large number of the killed were glass: blowers, who were on their way east from Findlay. ‘The freight train that tel the express is the dressed meat express from Chicago end was running about thirly miles an hour when it struck the passenger train. HOW IT OCCURRED. The eastbound Erie vestibule, No.8, was very late and was running on orders. When the stop was made at Ravenna the engineer and fireman on the passenger train went to work to repair the engine and the train was de- tained several minutes. A flagman was sent back, but went only a few feet, almost two car lengths. Suddenly. around the curve wost of the city, came train No. 82, com; of Swift's ment cars. The train was running rapidly and coming down a steep grade. The engineer supposed be hada clear track and it being a through train he was not expecting to stop at Ravenna, He called for brakes and reversed his engine, but all to no purpose. On came the freight train with but slightly decreased speed and no word of warning could be given people in the doomed train. The engineer and fireman jumped, alighting safely. A mo- ment more aud the heavy freght creshed into the passenger train. The miles. For & moment there was silence of death and then commenced the most frightful cries ever heard. The moans of the dying, the piteous cries for help from the imprisoned and helpless passengers and the mutilated and bioody remains of the dead seen through the fragments of the debris formed ascene of horror no pen can picture. The freight engine had gone clear through « day couch in the rear, through the sleeper and buried itself in the second sleeper, the third car of the train. ‘There was nothing left of the train but « mass of debris, and the sides of the third stood about the monster engine as if to hold it pris- oner and prevent further damage. This scene lasted just a moment when tongues of flame sprang up here and there and soon the whole wreck was wrapped in fire. It #as a sickening sight. Ascore of imprisoned sengers in the debris, the flames lighting up the place with a lurid glare only served to in- tensify the horror without aiding the rescuers. As soon as the dazed passengers in the other cars recovered themselves they rushed to the rescue of their unfortunate compan- ions. The fire department was immediately ed and every one in that end of the y rushed to the scene of the disaster. Hundreds soon surrounded the wreck, but to little purpose. ‘he awful ruin hed been wrought and little was left to do but to eecare and care for the remuins of the dead. MANY FROM CINCINNATI. Crxcrsxats, July 3.—The Ravenna wreck evi- dently caught Findlay and Cincinnati passen- gers exclusively. ‘The Chicago vestibuled train is met at Marion Junction by the through New York sleeper from Cincinnati, where the latter tached to the rear of the train. Last night ° am unusual number of mn gers from here that two sleepers instead of one eridoutly are tho two that are reported “Mest: in wreck. day coach, which was in the rear and which’ was going from Find- lay to Youngstown, would naturally be placed in the rear of the Cincinnati sleepers, and as a special car would not be sent out with less than fifty passengers the probability is that the causalties may all be limited to that car. Te have been received here from Mrs. Martin of Cincinnati, who was in one of the Cincinnati sleepers, and from Mr. Kobert Mitchell, who was in the other, that they had escaped. There has uot been so heavy « train load sent from here this summer as the one noise was beard for vent last night. The Erie office is filled with inquiring friends. o full record of Passengers on the ill-tated Erie train, No. 8, was kept. By mere accident a copy of ‘the sleeping ear di is in the Erie office, from which it ap} that in the rear of the extra next the Fi cosah was Mr. 8. J. It is understood coaches from New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio railroad, was forty-six ‘minutes late and the engmeer’ was trying to remedy the fault in the engine when the fast freight was sighted im the rear. A brakeman was ent back, but the heavy freight train of twenty-four cars could not be on the down grade in time and tt crashed into the rear of the passenger train. The rear coach contained forty-six all glass workers recesitly omployed at the shardson glass works in Findlay, who were on their way to their homes in New York state. The car was completely demolished and @ ter- rible slaughter occurred. Many of the dead and, injured were caught in the debris, and the fire which immediataly resulted from the seat tering of the locomotive's cinders completed the work of destruction and death, ‘The deed and the wounded as fast as they could be taken — Were taken to the Etna House and cared jor. George Holman, the emgincer of the freight, said to reporter: “I cannot sce that I am to blame. Ob, my God, if could bave got sand I could have stopped the train, but the rails were wet and the sand would not take. I was pot [warned in time and I could not eee the lights on the rear ager train owing to the darkness and fog. I reversed the lever as quickly as possible and with the fireman jumped from the train, sustaining severe frao- ture of the right han Mr. Holman secms to think that the brake- man of the train, Fred. Boynton, should have trom a greater distance. ‘The fire department of Ravenna was soon om the scene and extinguixbed the flames, but not before terrible havoc had been wrought, BURNED ALIVE. Besides the victims in the rear coach four Passengers in the Pullman car next forward were killed. Two men and one woman were burned to death in this car while their bodies were partly out of windows, their attempts to escape having been frustrated. One woman was screaming horritiy while being burned, but she could not be reached. Two headless bodies of men could be seen caught in the outrigging of the locomotive in- wide the tclescoped car and another dead body Was suspended from the cow-catcher. The brakeman who was sent back had got only about fifteen rods before he met the freight train. WHAT SUPERINTENDENT TUCKER sare tendent Tucker of the Erie nervously paced back and forth in his office all this morning, waiting anxiously for each dispatch from Re- venna. “I have received as yet only meager reports,” he said, “and am waiting anxiously for tull accounts from officials. There is noth- ing toconceal about the wreck. Jt was caused by an employe's negligence. Train No. §, fast night express going east, left Kent all right witha long line of coaches and sleepers. A few minutes later fast freight No. 582 followed, the regulation dimance at Ravenna, the neat stop, the engineer found something wrong with bis machine and delayed afew minutes to fix it. Knowing that the freight was following. fagman was sent back to stop it. The failure of this man to iy perform his duty caused the disaster. [am not vet exactly informed what be did or did not do, but suppose that he failed to go back far enough. “He evidently thougut that the pas- senger would go on before the freight came along and so «hirked his work. “he express train had been at Ravenna Just eight minutes when the freight dashed up, too close to be stopped by the flagman. It crashed into the rear of the passenger train and scat- ‘tered death on all sides. To add to the horror tire broke out aud consumed many of the dead aud injured who were held fast in the ruins. Such fearful sights had better be lett to the imagination thau any attempt made todepict im nip Ido not know how muny were killed or who they were, but reports will soon tell the story. Itwas 5 o'clock this morning when [ first received word, and since then I have beeu endeavoring to obtain definite uews, Lut every- thing is #0 Confused that as yet I have received THE OFFICIAL REPORT.
