As the Fourth of July will soon be upon us and while all are making preparations for en- joying this the greatest of all national holiday I think this an appropriate time to say a few worsis im your excellent journal in defense of the cverworked store clerk, who seldom knows what « day's holiday means. While many of our stores will be closed on Saturday, there are others who will be compelled to keep open to accommodate those who persist in patting off their shopping until last moment and thereby deprive the poor clerk of « day's holiday. ‘The stores whl all’ be open Friday night, and there is no reasonable excuse for any one shopping on the Fourth. Kemember that clerks are only human, although some le think they are more, and if you havea bee 's holiday try to put it to a better advantage than making purchases. Surely every patriotic American wishes to celebrate Independence day, and by suspending business we will aid each other in doing #0 HSK — The G. A. K. Fourth of July. Anderson of Jefferson street procured a piece of lime on Monday for the purpose of making lime water to cure dyspepsia. Yester- day one of his sons bronght a piece of the lime in the house to prevent its being wetted by the rain, and Mrs. Anderson, in order to reserve it, cast it into a emall stone jar in the wttom of which there was water. It was not Jong in effervescing, and the Anderson chil- dren, Fannie, aged sixteen, Wilbur, aged four- teen, Ethel, aged twelve, and Stella, aged six, gathered around it. One of the elder girle picked up the jar to remove it from the room and a second or two later it exploded. Little Stella was terribly hurt. The right eye, the doctors say, was burned out and the sight per- laps destroyed in the left. She suffered lon; cuts on the right aud left sides of her_face and a deep gash over the right oye. Dre. Pyles and Watson responded prompily, sewed up the gashes and removed the lime from the eyes and face of the injured child. The other children were hurt, though not seriously. There are some local chicken fighters, dog fighters and all-round sporting men here, who have developed what might be called a mani for fighting cats. During the spring a num- ber of cat battles took place and they were al- ways bloody and sickening. On Tuesday the college woods, near one of the entrances to place, was the battle ground. A large crowd of negroes and roughs were gath- ered about the pit and watched the fierce strug- gles of the two felines. For nearly two whole hours they fought, during which time the air was full of the sometimes piteous, sometimes defiant yells of the eats, accompanied by the coarse and worse sounding exclamations of the owners as victory or defeat threatened their pets. The spectators declared that they never witnessed a more savage fight and long before it was over the pit's bottom was covered with the fur and Llood of the principals. Finally the strength of one of the poor brutes gave out and he fell over and was quickly dispatched by his still comparatively strong adversary. There was considerable excitement after the fight and it was with difficulty that the bets that had been made were collected. The hero of the battle was theu tenderly bandaged by his owner and taken home. The dead cat remained in the bottom of the pit, which was filled by the crowd with the surrounding debris. WOODLEY HUNT CLUB ELECTION. ‘The semi-annual meeting for the election of officers of the Woodley Hunt Club was held last night at the Ebbitt House. About forty mem- bers were present. COMSTOCK COMMITTED. ‘The Coroner's Jury Hold Her as an Acces- sory to Murder. The inquest in the case of Theodore J. Lar- big, who was killed last Saturday night in Mre. Dovie Comstock’s apartments in Brooklyn, was held by Coroner Rooney in Brooklyn last night. The testimony developed little beyond what has already been detailed in Tue Stan. The policemen engaged on the ease were examined, and Kate McCaffrey, who was Mrs. Comstock’s companion. Neither Meserole nor Mrs. Com- stock went on the stand. ‘The only witness whose testimony had any new light on the af- fair was Mrs. Grace Greaton, who lives in th> fourth flat of the house where the shooting oc- curred. ‘There is an air shaft running through the building which enables those above to hear very plainly any noises from the apartments below. Mrs. Greaton heard important noises at the time of the killing, and she told about them. hhe first thing that attracted my attention said Mrs Greaton, “were voices as of people quarreling. I could distinguish a man’s voice and a woman’s voice. ‘My God! don'tpoint that revolver at me!” were the first wordy could distingnish. ‘They were in a woman's voice. “‘Don't point that gun at me,’ in » deep man's voice. “Yes, Lwill,’ said another voice. It sounded like that of a different man. Then,” continued Mrs. Greaton, ‘came two pistol shots in quick succession.” Mrs. Greaton says that after this she stood at the air shaft fora little while, and then she went to see another woman. She did not go down stairs. When District Attorney Ridgway pressed her, Mrs. Greaton remembered to have heard a man’s voice say, “Well, you keep that dog out of here.” She didn't know whether or not they had 'adog mn the flat. She did not {know Mrs. Comstock. She did not remember | eter, te have seen her, Meserole or Larbig. ‘The jury, after a brief deliberation, found { that the killing was done by Meserole and that | Mrs. Comstock was an accessory to the murder. ‘The prisoners were then committed to jail to | await the action of the grand jury. ——_—_+oo____— Results of Yesterday's Racin; At Sheepshead Bay: First race, 1 mile—Tulla | Blackburn, 1: Strideaway, 2; Bermuda, 3.
