“THE EVENING STAR. ~ WASHINGTON: ‘The first African slaves ever on this conti- nent were brought here in the course of the slave trafic Undoubtedly much the larger portion of the population of African descent now in the United States are the direct off- spring of these victims of the slave trade, But ‘when so eminent a statistician as Gen. Francis states his beliet that the number of Africans in this country would aot now exceed 75,000 but for the slave trade, those who are at all familiar with the early colonial history may well wender on what foundation his opinion rests. Certainly the first negroes in the Caro- liasa were not sold there into slavery, however their owners came originally by them. The colony that settled om the Cape Fear and sub- sequently removed to South Carolina held a noaraber of black slaves which they had brought them from the West Indies, and other ne- groes were taken from the West India Islands iato North and South Carolina. It is highly probable that the number of descendants of such servants not brought into the colonies under the slave traffic as practiced here is largely in excess of that mentioned by Gen. Walker. There is no way to verify either his estimate or any other, but the probabilit from known facts are agai his figures. see ‘The aseumption of centro} today by the De- partment of Agriculture over the newly orga ized weather bureau. and the separation of the weather from the «igual service of the army is an event of national importance. If the farmers of the United States caa garner a full crop there is no reason why prices should not climb up this fall, or at least as soon as the old stock fof cereals is ex- haasted.
