2 TRADE WITH SOUTH AMERICA. ‘It Is Expected That Six Treaties Will Have Beeu Completed When Congress Meets. It is expected that by the time Congress meets there will have been six reciprocity treaties completed. The one with Brazil has Jong since been aimounced, that with Spain, relating chiefly to Cuba, has been signed, aud dispatches from Spain say that its provisions are to be made public on the Ist of August. In addition to these the President has now in his possession awaiting his approval treaties under- stood to be with Colombia and Pera. These are similar to that with Brazil—not, strictly *peaking, reciprocity treaties, but offers on the part of the foreign nation of certain privileg in consideration of our not withdrawing privi- leges of trade already grant@l. On account of the state of her finances Peru cannot afford to offer much that will reduce her revenues, but she bas to propose such concessions as will probably be acceptable to this govern- ment under the circumstances, ‘Two other treaties pending, which are ex- pected to be soon completed are, with Gaate- mala and the «mall but prosperous republic of Costa Kica. Both of these governments pro- Rered reciprocity treaties with the United ‘tates when the South American commission was there in 1485. Guatemala is as eager as she was at that time for a treaty, and desires but little more than the continuation of the pri leges xtended to her chief articles of im- tion and the maintenance of a friendiy iisposition toward her by the United States. As these two things are about all that can be offered by President Harrison under the “reciprocity” provision of the McKinley bill the opportunity of an agreement here are peculiarly fortunate, and the agreement is almost accomplished. ‘There is more of doabt about the Costa Rican treaty. It is not certain that an agree- ‘Ment can be reached, though one is expected. In 1885 the only thing Guatemala asked in return for the free admission of many of our products into her ports was the continuation ‘of onr free list, which included most of the ex- ports from that country, and, in addition, the free aimission of sugar and tobacco. ‘The president of Guatemala expressed a particular desire that sugar should be admitted free, the desire being to encourage the production of sugar there in exportable quantities. Now that sugar is on the free list] to maintain it there Guatemala, it is said, ie willing to grant liberal concessions to the United States without stick- ling over free tobacco. In consideration of a romixe of permanency of our present free ist, including sugar, Guatemala will probably agree to admit free of duty coal, raw cotton, retined petroleum, wooden furniture, flour, agricultural implements, cured and preserved meats, fruite and vegetables, dressed lumber, hardware, building lime. tile, live stock, pro- Visions and lard and other articles of general consumption produced in this country, besides tools and machinery. Costa Rica is willing enough, it is said, to make concessions to us, but she wants more in return than the McKin- Jey bill will permit. — AMUSEMENTS, The Ivy City Brick Company has tendered the use of the track and grounds at Ivy City to the bricklayers and they will hold a big picnic there on the Fourth for the benefit and amuse- ment of all who come. Coaches will leave power house at Eckington every ten minutes after 7:0 a. m. All sorts of amusements pro- vided at the grounds and plenty to eat. THE BROOKLYN TRAGEDY. A DESERT UNDER WATER. Here is a great inland basin, which, at its lowest part, is 270 feet below the sea level. It has an area of 3,000 square miles, and extends from about 100 miles from the Colorado river clear to Seven Palms on the Southern Pacific railroad. Near Salton are extensive salt works where the product ex- iste almost in ite natural state. It is said that young Meserole’s acquaintance with Mrs. Comstock has extended over a much longer period than he has represented, and that itwas his infatuation for her which led to his pe about a year ago, his father, Gen.
