Next week promises to be an eventful one among the several thousand bicyclists in this city, as well as amang the wheelmen all over the country. The principal event of the week will be the bicycle meet at Hagerstown, as heretofore announced in Tux Stan, and the Washington wheelmen are looking forward to that event with much interest. Much enthu- sinam is being manifested among the clubs and Y effort is being made to get out a large representation. As heretofore stated the principal event of the meet will be the races on the Fourth of July and the open-air smoker at night, although each day of the meet there will be fancy and trick riding. An enjoyable feature of the event will be the carly morning runs over the smooth roads to the many places of interest in that section of the countre and the hops that are to be given at the Hotels in honor of the guests. WHEN TUR BICYCLISTS WILL LEAVE. Probsbly a jarge majority of thore intending to visit Hagerstown during the meet will go on the train leaving here Wednesday afternoon at 5:90 o'clock over the Baltimore and Qhio ra road. ‘The train reaches Hagerstown at 3:37 o'clock, when the members of the various clubs will enjoy a supper spread for their benefit hile most of the clubs will be zepresented some of them will not be, as other errange- ments have already been made. ‘fhe members of the Capital Club will not attend asa club, although individual members may join in the party and attend the meet. Capt. McDaniels has issued an order fora lovely ran through the Sbenandoah valley in the vicinity of Stras- burg, and those in the party will no doubt have'x good time, as they may go as far as the tural bridge before returning home. The party wili go from here on a train on the after- neon ef the $4 and will be gone two or three days, returning on their wheels via Berryville and Leesburg. THE COLUMBIA CYCLE CLUB. ‘The Columbia Cycle Club expects to turn out in large numbers, and should they enter in any of the races during the meet the boys are confi- dent that they will bring back a prize. Their club house is situated at the corner of New York «venue, third and M streets northwest, where | all the amusements of a good club. building faces the large triangular grass lat and is one of the best and most comforta- Gre quarters in that vection of the ety. In the reception room there is on exhibition a large silver cup that was won by the club in the twenty-mile race on the Conduit two years ago, of which the members are justly proud. Although it has not vet been organized two mouths it is able to turn out in larger numbers on the regular weekly runs than older organiza. tions, and will in ‘all probability bare the representation in retown of an; club from the national capita x: Nearly thirty members of the elub will make ¢ pilgrimage in a special car, leaving here Wednesday afternoon and arriving in Hagers- town at 4:30 o'clock. Among the members of the club who are go- ing are Arthur H. Smith, president; Miss Mamie Doaglas, vice president: Cyrus C. Babb, secretary; Miss Grace Kecfer, treasurer; Mr. B. FP. Correspondence of The Evening Star. Rocxviz, June 25, 1891. ‘Within the past two days a general com- mencement of the wheat harvest has been made by the farmers of this county. The previous days of storms and heavy rains had caused con- siderable anxiet¥ in regard to this crop, but those who have made a close investigation re- port that although much of the erop has been badly beaten down by the rain and will reqnire extra labor to save it, yet the head of the Wheat is uninjured and is very heavy. Should the weather continue favorable # large portion of the crop will have been barvested by the carly part of next week. ‘The grass crop, which was very short previous to the late rains, has greatly improved and « average crop is expected in this section. Corn looks well and | is growing finely, but stands very unevenly in the field. “The prospect for all kinds, of fruit is excellent. ol. SAM. ae agg A CURIOUS SUIT. The Litigation in Regard to the C. & O. ‘Canal—Hagerstown Notes. Correspondence of The Evening Star. Haarnstows, June 25, 1891. The much-telked-of, written about and le gally prosecuted Chesapeake and Obio canal was in court in equity again here yesterday, when Chief Judge Richard H. Alvey heard counsel upon a petition presented by the canal trustees, appointed under the court, to enjoin the sheriff of Allegany county, this state, from levying upon the property of the canal com- pany to satisfy what is known as the Brady Andgment for some $7,000, with interest from 1849. The case is a curious one. The original declaration was filed in the Allegany county court at Cumberland in 1843, claiming $700. This, it seems, was an error, for five years later, defendants consenting, an amended declaration was filed claiming $7,000. The judgment was entered up in October, 1849, as of 1844, and to bear interest from 1849. By some mishap the cause of action was mislaid or lost. Recently the execution was levied at Cumberland upon the wharf property of the canal company and other real estate at that place which’ the judg- ment creditors claim is not necesnry for the operation of the canal and is not covered by the mottgage to the state of ‘Maryland. exc. cuted under the act of 1844, which it seems, however, does cover all the property owned by the company or to be thereafter acquired. In the defense against this execution the trustees of the canal principally rely upon the fact that the circuit court of this (Washington) county as taken possession e property of the Canal Company, to be administered. under its direction and by its orders, and it is not com- petent for the law side of the circuit court of Allegany county or for any other court to interfere with it or any part of it in any such proceedings. J.W. 8. Cochran. of Cumber- land appeared for the Brady claimants, while the trustees of the canal were represented by Gen. Bradley T. Johnson, H. H. Keedy and Hugh L. Bond, jr. The arguments were spirited and exhaustive, at the conclusion of which Judge Alvey reserved his decision. St. James College, this county, held its clos- ing exercises yesterday, Bishop Paret making an impressive address. Three gold medals Were awarded—the Dean Stephenson medal to Thomas Iglehart of Anne Arundel county, the bishop's medal to James Briscoe of Baltimore and the principal's medal to A. G. Richards of Hancock, this county. A large number of valu- able books were distributed as prizes for pro- iency in the various branches. ‘The present week was n propitious one for Hagerstown old soldiers, pensions being granted to John Miller, 12 per month; George Tauls- grove, $10 per month; Michael Englebrigh 312 per tant, snd. Jos. Dowarde 912 “pet month and #144 back pay. The Keformed church of Maryland, Vir- ginia and Pennsyivania will hold a reunion at Pen-Mar on: Ailgust 13. Extensive prepara- tions are being mnde for the occasion and ar- rangements have been perfected for addresses by the most prominent men of the chureh. Messrs. S.C. Holden & Son of Rockville, Montgomery county, this state, have rented a. factory, purchased ‘property ‘and will begin the manufacture of stepladders and wooden novelties here. Patrick Smith is in jail here awaiting the orders of United States authorities. He passed counterfeit haif dollars, well executed, upon a number of our merchants and whec arreuted he had in his possession lead, acids, &c., used in the manufacture of counterfeit money. The Cranford bicycle works of this city have large contract for presses for the United States. ‘These prevses are to be used in the bu- reau of engraving and printing. A ear load was shipped to Washington yesterday. Mr. John M. Buhrman of this county has | been granted a divorce from his wife, Emma C. Buhrman. Harvest is upon the farmers of Washington county and by Monday of next week they will ali be in the field. ‘The crop generally is a good one, and a large vield is expected.
