Yesterday Samuel Koune, a colored boy of eighteen years, was thrown from a cart at the corner of Sth and B streets northeast by the horse running away. He was badiy cut sbout | the right leg and the ninth precinct patrol Wagon took him to Providence Hospital — Two Small Fires. Yesterday afternoon the frame stable in rear of 2416 N street, owned by D. Lochran and oc- cupied by Anton Heurich, was fire and with it one horse. The loss wa $500. Willie Gayo, an enterprising little newsboy who has been selling papers and giving his mother the proceeds of his sales, was the vic~ tim of a fatal accident on Pennsylvania avenue near the Peace Monument yesterday afternoon. Willie was only twelve years old, but by sel ing copies of Tne Srar he managed to earn more than a good living and was a great help to bis parenis. His father is an Italian and his mother is of Irish extraction. They live in Pardy’s court, and yesterday —_after- noon their young son left home and started out on bis usual business tour to supply a portion of the population with |copies of Tue Stan. Less than three hours | later the parents received the sad intelligence | that their son had been run over by a street car on the Washington and Georgetown rail- road. ‘The little boy's mother’s maiden name was Martin and many of bis playmates know bim as Willie Martin. HOW THE ACCIDENT OccURRED. With his bundle of Srans Willie jumped on the street cars and asked the passengers if they wanted papers. In some cars he disposed of several, papers, while in others the passengers had already been supplied. The last car on Which the unfortunate boy jumped was car No. 31, of which Joseph S. Flemming was con- ductor, and the car that intlicted the fatal in- juries was No. 104, of which John Feaster was driver. Both vehicles were open, or summer cars, and the boy was on the siue platform of No. 31, which was going west, when car No. 104 came along going in the opposite direction. Exactly how the boy got off the ear will be shown at the coroner's inquest this afternoon, as some one made a statement to the effect that Conductor Flemming pushed the boy off the car, but this statement is denied by the conductor. However, the boy got off car 104, he disap- peared beneath car $1 and the rear if not both wheels passed over his legs, inflicting wounds that were almost necessarily fatal. His left leg was so badiy cut that ithad to be amputated and the right was also badly cut. The ears were stopped and the little sufferer was carried a few feet from the track with his bundie of papers aud some one provided a Pillow for him to make him as ‘comfortable as possible. SAID THE CONDUCTOR PUSHED HIM OFF. He had not lost consciousness, but was aware of what was going on. One of his statements, so abystander says, was that the conductor pushed him off the ear, and then he Legged for ix moth It was but a few minutes before the heart- broken woman was at the side of her dying son and her heartrending eries brought tears to the eves of many bystanders, Some one drove to the sixth police station nd asked to have the ambulance sent for the boy. The ambulance is kept over in South ‘ashingtou, in an out-of-the-way place, and consequently it was something like half an hor before that vehicle arrived to convey the injured boy to the hospital. LAID HALF AN HOUR IN THE STREET. Car after car passed the scene while the am- bulance was being waited for and the passen- gers were where they could witness the sad sight. Bystanders complained of the slowness of the ambulance, but no one called a vehicle and removed the sufferer and he was permitted to remain there in the street with his mother at his side for about half an hour. The ambulance finally arrived and removed the boy to Providence Hospital, where he died at 1 o'clock this morning. Driver Feaster and Conductor Flemming were arrested and taken to the sixth police sta~ tion. Conductor Flemming denies that he pushed the bey off the car and he says that no one regrets the accident more than himself. He says that the boy jumped on the ear and he called to him to get oif, as he might get hurt. The boy remained on ‘the platform until the other ear approached and then he jumped off. Conduetor Shaw of car 31 was on the rear platform at the time of the accident, and he said he saw the boy just as he disappeared be- neath the car. The driver, Feaster, who is under arrest, says that when he saw the boy fall under his car it was too late for him to stop his horses in time to prevent the serious happening. When the boy died this morning his parents and friends were at his bedside, where the ters and doctors were doing all they could for the patient. AN INQUEST TO BE HELD. ‘This morning the dead body was removed to the morgue, and Coroner Patterson decided to hold an inquest at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon. ani hatala A FATAL JUMP. The police Were soon on the spot and it was found that the door had been broken and @ money drawer foreed open. In the drawer was about #5 in change and a revolver and the fact that when the police arrived the drawer was still open with nothing taken from it showed the pre- cipitate flight of the robbers, who had prob- ably been alarmed at the approach of footsteps. Last night's play was the first half of the match, which will be com- pleted tonight in the rooms of the Columbia Club. The tournament that is being played is based on the principles of duplicate whist, Kalama- zoo method, Milwaukee rules. It is the first match of its sort and size that has ever taken place in Washington, and is therefore of un- usual interest to whist players. By the dup! cate method of play the element of luck practically eliminated, ax each side plays turn with the same hands, and the victory goes to the side making the most of the cards to them.
