Union Veterans and Ex-Confederates Unite in Memorial Services at Fredericksbarg. Correspondence of The Evening Star. Frepenicxsncns, Va., May 30, 1891. The sun shone out with more than regal splendor upon faces of brave men and fair women from the cities of Washington, D. C., and Fredericksburg, Va., on this the morning of our national memorial day. The occasion which brought about such unusual bustle and holiday attire on the part of our citizens was posing the department of the Union Veterans’ Union of the District of Columbia, which, to- gether with the ladies who accompanied them, | numbered nearly, if not quite, 500 persons. Elaborate preparations had been made for their reception. The party was met at the depot by Mayor Rowe and the members of the reception and arrangements committees, con- sisting of Judge Slaughter, Maj. Thomas P. Wallace, R. B. Merchant, editor Fredericksburg Star; Capts. M. B. Rowe and 8. J. Quinn, John W. Woltz, esq., Hon. J. 8. Potter, H. K. Phil- lips, Gen. Geo. F. Wheeler, E. J. Godfrey, H. €. Roropaugh, 8. Exercises were at ouce commenced by the de- livery of an excellent introductory address by Mayor Rowe. This was followed by an address of welcome by Col. R. B. Merchant of Freder- icksburg, after which Gen. John J. Gregg and Hon. Jolin S. MeCalmont, ex-commissioner of customs of Washington, made appropriate.and patriotic addresses. ’ Ex-Department Com- mander Thos. 8. Hopkins was the next speaker, and having been a participant in the battle of Fredericksburg, his remarks elicited marked attention. Col. W. H. Michael of Washington read an original poem with great power and effect. The formal presentation of an elabo- rate floral wreath by the ladies of the Mary Washington Monument Association was hand- somely performed by Col. K. B. Merchant, in the absence of Senator Little of Virginia. | When he seized the American flag and called on every one present wiuo loved that flag to give three cheers, ex-confederates rivaled ex-Union soldiers in the Joyous shout which went forth, and when he waved the flag over their heads and closed with the following stanza, the en- thusiasm was unbounde: Flag of the :ree heart’s hope and home, the visitation of the various commands com- | NEWS FROM ROCKVILLE. Fifteen thousand Union soldiers are buried in the Fredericksburg cemetery, and yet this is the first time the graves were ever decorated onascale of any magnitude since the war. The cemetery, located on Marye’s Heights, comprises about thirteen or fourteen acrew and is admirably kept, presenting an appearance second to none other in the United States. The pavilion is constructed after the form of a Sibley tent, excepting that it is octagon shaped, and commands 4 fine view of the city, the val- ley where the great battle was fought, the lofty heights beyond, where the federal troops under Burnside, Sumner, Franklin, French and other generals were located; the sunken road, the memorable stone wall, the fatal rail- road cut, where the Irish brigade under Gen. Meagher took temporary refuge, and many other points of interest. Seated within the pavilion, in addition to the speakers, ladies and staff officers, were a num- ber of distinguished citizens of Fredericks- burg and state of Virginia, also Cols. John Finn, M. L. Littlefield, H. L. Johnson, Frank ‘T. Hall, Wm. Irving, H. L. Street, H. Sims, Jos. E. Clifford, Dan’l O’Niell, W. C. Talley, J: K. Magie, Representative Jerry Simpson, ex- Representative Yoder, Chaplain Smith and others of Washington.'D.C. ‘The freedom of the city was extended to the visitors by the mayor. Carriages were going and coming all day long with loads of visiting strangers. The horses and wagons in the line were decorated with American Nothing seemed to have been overlooked that would contribute to the comfort of the guest. A picture was taken in front of the hotel of visitors and citizens. In fact, the whole affair partook more of the na- ture of an old-fashioned Fourth of July cele- bration than a national memorial day. The visitors from Washington were enthusiastic in their praises of the spirit of their hosts. eee FOREIGN TOPICS OF INTEREST. ospitality and chivalric Matters of Moment in the Capitals of the Old World. ‘The Berlin Post officially announces that the Marquis di Rudini, the Italian premier, has formally communicated to the German’ and Austrian governments the determination of Italy to adhere to the driebund. About Eight Hundred Models Now Awaiting an Inspection by a Commission. Jadging from the number of models re- ceived at the Post Office Department the in- ventive minds of the country have been de- voting their time and attention to devising a house letter box. Mr. Wanamaker wants some- thing of the kind that householders can attach to their front doors, so as to save the time of letter carriers in making their rounds. The idea is to put the mail in these boxes, ring the bell and they hurry away without waiting for the door to be opened. Last January in response to an invitation a number of models were examined by a com- mission. There were some two or three hun- dred models submitted and the commission found nothing that exactly filled the bill. Mr. Wanamaker was not discouraged, He de- termined to try again. Inventors have been sending in their models and yesterday, which the last for the ‘recelpt of models, no less than 163 were brought to the depart- ment. The total number of models now on hand is between 700 and 800 and the prospect is that the commission may be able to find some one that will be suitable.
