Then he was detailed for recruiting service and ordered to New York. He was re- called to commgnd K troop at Fort Myer, having been transferred from troop I for that purpose. Capt. Hughes is an Indian fighter of wide reputation and was conspicuously. gal- lant in the Thornburgh relief and the San Andreas affair. His record in the field is ex- ceptionally good. LIEUT. CHAS. W. TAYLOR. : None of the men who were once prominent as Oklahoma “boomers” need any introduc- tion to K troop’s first lieutenant, Charles W. Taylor. They have all met him with more or less frequency. Lieut. Taylor joined the ninth cavalry in 1879 and has been right at the front ever since. He was in the Ute war in "79 and in 188i and 1*82 commanded the In- dian scouts in the Apache troubles then rife. ‘The years 1883 and 1884 were spent in Indian territory and Oklahoma where boomers and so-called *‘judges” did their ut- most to hamper the movements he had been ordered to make, but the licntenant came out ontop everytime. From 1884 to 1888 Licut. Taylor was regimental quartermaster, and it was during his administration that the new tat Fort Kobinson was built. During the Sioux campaign of last winter Lieut. Taylor commanded the Cheyenne scouts, and with that many participated in the fight at Wounded Kn LIEUT. ALEXANDER W. PERRY. The junior officer of K troop is Second Lieut. Alexander W. Perry, who was born in this city. He has been in the service since 1883, having hands, graduated from West Point that year. His first service was with the tenth infantry, but in 1889 he was transferred to the ninth cavalry. He is very popular in the command and rendered good service with his troop in the Sioux cam- paign last winter, participating m all the hard marehing and fighting done by Henry's bat- tilion. ‘Lieut, Perry has the revtation of be- ing one of the most skillful horsemen in the army. a ALEXANDRIA. ‘HE MEMONIAL CELEBRATION. The Alexandria confederate memorial cele- bration, which usually takes place on the 24th of May, the day on which the Alexandria troops left for the war, was observed this year on Monday, the 25th. No observance took place until 6 o'clock in the afternoon. ‘Then the Alexandria Drum Corps, the Alexandria Light Infantry, the St. John’s Cudets, the Lee Camp of Veterans, Rathbone Division, Knights of Pythias, and the Sons of the Veterans fell i line on St. Asaph street and marched by King Fairfax, Duke and Washington street to the confederate monument, where dirges by the drum corps, prayer by Rev. George H. Nor- ton, chaplain of Lee camp, hymns by the combined chorus and an oration by Con rade K. Kemper took place. Mr. Kemper, while declaring absolute devotion to the government asthe union of the states, eulogized confed- erate valor and mourned the brave men who died in its cause and “whose graves fill the land where the army of northern Virginia made its four years’ record of glory.” In con- clusion he invited the assembly to decorate the monument and remember the dead. The monument was then decorated amid music and the line moved to Christ Church, where, dur ing a hymn by the ladies, ge mound beneath which ix buried the remains of the confederates from other states who died in Alexandria, pris- oners of war, was decorated. This concluded the exercises, which occupied about an hour. DEPAMTURE OF A PASTOR. Kev. Father Dennis O'Kane, $.J., celebrated atGo'clock this morning his last’ mass here, and soon afterward left for St. Mary's county, Md. A meeting of the congregation was held last night at the Catholic Lyceum Hall, M. B. Marietta College, Ohio, formerly United States commissioner of education, read the report of the board of education. The subject was con- tinued by Daniel H. Poor, D. D., the secretary, and George H. Baker, D.'D., the president of the boar: . D. Hewitt, D. D., of Kansas Dr. Logan and Dr. C€ ier of Illinois. The re- port was then accepted and its recommenda- tions adopted. ‘Lhe report of the proof-text committee was made the first order for Friday morning. It is thought by good observers that the tide of opinion is changing in tavor of vetoing Dr. Briggs’ appointment or tfausfer to the Robin- son professorship of biblical theology without touching the question of his heresy, as that would prejudge the case before the New York presbytery, and very possibly without assiyn- ing grounds. ee Gone Into Gentile Hands. The controlling interest in the Salt Lake (Utah) Herald, the leading exponent of the Mormon church, hae passed into Gentile per, advocating the admission of Utah into Union. ‘The old parties are broken up in is political revolution and henceforth all issues will be on national party lines. 2 Tragedy at a Sam Jones Meeting. At the close of Rev. Sam Jones’ meeting at Houston Sunday night F. L. Hunter anda woman who accompanied him began firing with pistols ata Mrs. Stoner, who had lived with Mr. Hunter and who believed herself to be his wife. An officer who attempted to pro- cet Mrs. Stoner was fatally wounded. Mrs. Stoner was not hurt. She says Mr. Hunter has seven wives nd had tried to force her to leave Houston. .Flowers on Lovejoy’s Grave. The grave of Elijah P. Lovejoy, the aboli- tionist, at Alton, IlL., was decorated on Sunday by Lovejoy Camp, Sons of Veterans, from St. Louis, and the local Lovejoy Club and members of the United Brothers of Friendship.
