Seventy-six Graduates of the Spencerian Business College Recetve Diplomas. AN INTEMESTING PROGRAM OF EXERCISES—EXCEL- LENT ADDRESSES MADE BY SOME OF THE GRADUATES, PROFESSOR AND MUS. SPENCER, PROF. GILLET AND SECRETARY FOSTER. Before an andience that filled every nook and corner of the Academy of Music seventy-six gtadnates of the Spencerian Business College of the class of 1891 received their diplomas last night. It was the twenty-fifth commencement of thie well-known institution, the silver wed- ding of the Spencers to educational pursuits in the District of Columbia. No anniversary could have been more fittingly celebrated, for theex- ercises last night were pronounced the most entertaining and instructive ever given by the college. The stage resembled a huge flower garden, and when, shortly after 8 o'clock, the graduates came on in single file, the ladies all dressed in white and the gentlemen in black, with rose boutonnieres, it seemed as though a bit of fairy land had been transplanted there. INVITED GUESTS. On the stage in front of the graduates sat the invited guests. Included among them were Secretary Foster, Commissioner Robert, Rev. Dr. Addison. Dr. Gillet, chancellor of Chatau- Fn let. Jessie B. Wilson, Gen. R. D. ussey and Prof. Geo. E. Little. ‘In the sec- ond semi-circle were college Profs. Ely, Lester, Middleton, Newman, Misses Wise and’ Graves. In the boxes, friends of Secretary Foster, the officers of Glen Echo Chautanqua, Messrs. Baltzley brothers, Mrs. Jenni: Mr. and Mrs. McLennon, teachers of the Normal School Addison. senses ing the night Sines. Both acquitted themselves with honor. Miss Meads sang “Perle du Brazil” exquisitely accompanied by Mr. Henry Jaeger on the flute. She wus followed later by Miss Florence Stid- = heen — ito solo by ih en- tit “Beauty's Eyes,” accompani ya violin. 1¢ was heartily epplanded. ‘MR. AND MES. SPENCER'S ADDRESSES. Principal H. C. Spencer delivered an add~ess tothe graduates which teemed with good ad- vice. He spoke of the great future which awaited them and cautioned them against the many snares to be found in the world. Prof. cer then introduced Chanceilor Gillet of jorance an: ‘gloom ‘into intelligence, usefulness and dis- tinetion by Chautauqua training, associations and influences. Mrs. Sara A. Spencer addressed the gradu- ates upon “Our College Family.” Referring to the college family, she said the Spencerian Business College had graduates in all parts of the civilized world. ‘They love and honor the college in their hearts and liyes. She com- mended to them all the higher education and wider range of usefulness offered by Glen Echo Chautauqua and declared that Mr. Spen- cer and herself had made a vow never again to work twelve months in the year in Washing- ton, but to devote at least two of them to the reviving atmosphere and elevating influences of Glen Echo Chautauqua, where they would wel- come students and friends. She introduced Secretary Foster by saying that when Mr. Spencer and herself came to Washington they did not _know a human being here except Gen. and Birs. Garfield, but in that household they met Hon. Charles Foster of Ohio. SECRETARY FOSTER’S HAPPY TALK. Secretary Foster, after speaking in very complimentary terms of the college and the exereises of the evening, congratulated the class upon the fact that they lived in a country of free instivutions, enjoying privi- loges thet no other gradusting clase is any other country can begin to enjoy. He said that the blessings of free institutions and American citizenship are so manifold that the people do not begin to appreciate them. In this country, he continued, every man is the equal of every one else so far as the laws are concerned. Here, thank God, he continued, there are no castes and distinctions in society. Every man is entitled to work out bis future for himself. This condition, ‘he said, does not exist to the masses of the in any other country on the face of the earth. A man may be born in a palace and rocked in a silver cradle and another may be born in a cabin and rocked in a trough with the chances that the one born in the cabin will excel in achievements the child rocked in a silver cradle. ‘The biggest fool in England, if born of a queen mother, becomes king. This is not the way kings are made hero. Speaking of the advantages of hardship in life Secretary Foster told the following story: THE SECRETARY'S LITTLE STORY. “I remember once here in Washington (it ra was during my congressional life) having par- ticipated in a little dinner. There were six of us, and I may mention Gen. Garfield as one of the party. After discussing the business that brought us together we began to discuss our- selves alittle. It so happened that three of us were what are known in this country as “self- made men.” ‘The other three were born of rich parents. The self-made man is always liable to be egotistical. The man who has been succeseful in business will perbaps tell you that he began life on ashilling. One of the self- made men stated that he had never been to school more than six weeks in his life and had been governor and state senator. A gentleman who was quite wealthy and came from a rich family interrupted the self-made man by saying: ‘Look here, I'm sick and tired of you self-made wen. Youhad to labor for a living, while I Teared in elegance and ease, my college had ted (te work to do that which makes men and I ata here, y: my disad- vantages. ‘The graduates then filed by and the Secre- tary handed each a diploma. ‘THE GRADUATES, ‘The following isa list of the graduates: Ladies, day claes—Lily E. Bryant and Wm. Chew, who are charged with having inflicted the injuries, are still in jail, and last night the police received informa- tion that Mrs. Goodloe was dying. She has been attended by Dr. Harrison, but the kick in the stomach so badly injured her that inflam- mation had set in and her death, it was thought last night, was only # question offs short while. Armstead Goodloe isa blind man and receives a pension of $72 a month.
