Senator and Mrs. Leland Stanford gave a dinner party in honor of the President and Mrs. Harrison last Tuesday evening at their San Francisco home and afier the dinner gave 8 reception, to which five hundred guests were invited. The next day the presidential party Visited Senator Stanford's country place, Palo Alto, and after driving over the beautiful es- tate, where the Stanford University buildings are now in course of erection, were enter- tained at a luncheon there. Mrs. E. A. Arnold of Cupitol Hill will be glad to see her friends at her new home, 225 Penn- sylvania avenue southeast. Mrs. Gen. Mower and family are at the Lin- coln. The Danish minister has left the city for a short trip west. Mrs. F.8. Finley of Ypsilanti, Mich., is on a visit of several weeks to her son, Dr. M. F. Fin- ley of this city. Gen. Geo. W. Porter, the superintendent of the census, and Mrs. Porter have just started on an extended trip west. They will go first to Chicago and then to San Francisco, where Mr. Porter has relatives. Schneider and his bride was held at their residence, 1749 Q street, Saturday afternoon, and for four hours their beautiful home was’ crowded with hunareds of well-known Washingtonians. The house was artistically decorated with many palts, lilies and other potted plants and beautiful roses in profusion. The mantels were especially pretty, with smilax and ivy intertwined about the beautiful ornaments and the lighted clusters of candles. The dining room table, besides being Dountifully laden with salads,” strawberries, ices, &c., was prettily decorated with flowers. From the chandelier above four white ribbons, intertwined with smilax, extended to each cor- ner of the table, ending in a cluster of pink roses. Wright, who holds the championship of the south; Valentine G. Hall, one of the champions in doubles in | this country; J. Post, jr., who won the open tournament in singles held here in 1859; jason F. Prosser, who, with Post, won the open tournament in doubles held here in 1889; E. A. Thompson and K. V. Beach, the winners of the championship in doubles in the open tourna- ment held in this city Inst fall, and A. H. 8. Post of Baltimore, the champion of the Bouth- ern Lawn Tennis Association. It is expected that some twenty of the District players will enter the tournament.
