Stearns in answer to a Stan reporter's inquiries. “So far as my experience gocs thore are even more cases now than during the epidemic last year. The mortality, however, does not seem to be ‘ny greater, if as great. Thenature of the dis- ease seems to vary somewhat this year and there is a greater tendency to pulmonary symptoms. A week or so of good weather will putan effectual check on the progress of the disease in this city. There are, however, the wise and the foolish, and the latter especially at this season of the year are bound to suffer. “As soon as the grip scare has a little abated some people will commence taking off their heavy flannels and there will be another little run of colds or the grip. Epidemics, like this of the grip, come in waves. People are care- Jess and thousands are caught by the disease. ‘Then the sight of so much sickness and an un usual number of funerals on the streets raises « fright, and for a time extra care and_precau- tions are used and the epidemic burns itself out. IN ITSELF IT 18 SIMPLE. “The grip is, in itself,a simple affair, and unaccompanied by outside complications needs simply care and quiet. The trouble, however, is that the disease immediately attacks the weakest portion of the body. Where the phy- sician knows the condition of his patient he must, ina case of grip, protect any weakness i — whether it be of the lungs, heart, i e. “Yom the disease known as the grip is as old probably as man, but owing to its infre- quent occurrence and short duration it has been little studied and as little bas been written concerning it. ‘The epidemics usually last only afew months, and during that period phy- sicians are too busy to make any very careful or extended investigation of the disease. When leisure comes there are no cases to investigate and so it goes. By the time another visitation comes the physicians who aro acquainted with the disease are all dead and the new goneration must meet the question anew.” saan nay Scores of Policy Cases. Judge Miller will be kept busy for some days when Assistant District Attorney Mullowney Presents the policy cascs which have been pending for several months. There are nearly one hundred of these cases, and some of them are more than a year old. In them the defendants demanded jury trials, and the cases were indefinitely postponed until the jury Was obtained, but now it Sele mant rers of the only article ever patented for instant relief of painful feet.
