Many Thousands Stricken With the Fatal Malady. NARROW ESCAPE OF A CABLE CAR. | Rev. Dr. Crosby Not Expected to Survive the Day. PISTOLS IN A LEGISLATURE. SPREAD OF THE GRIP. Nearly = Quarter of a Million in Chisago Are Stricken. Cuicaso, March 28.—The deaths reported from pneumonia and kindred ailments for the week will be about 900, probably the largest number ever recorded in this city. A careful estimate justifies the statement that nearly a quarter of million people in this city are under medical treatment. Every branch of business is crippled by the prevailing sickness. Dr. J.D. Hammond said today, “The present epidemic of the grip is as bad as a season of cholera, so far asthe health of people affected is concerned. Every doctor that I know is overrun with business.” Damp, cloudy weather continues bere, and the epidemic of grip has steadily grown more severe and more fatal since the beginning of the present month. Officials of the de \t of health say that the death rate for the present week is unprecedented. ‘The number of deaths since the Ist of March, compared with the number for a id ing period in 18%, illustrates the present con- dition of things’ very clearly. The table is made up by weeks: 1890—First week, 434; see. ond week, 498; third week, 468; fourth week, 419. 1891—First week, 491; second week, 709: third week, S04; fourth week, 900. The re- turns for this week are as yet incomplete, but are estimated as above. New Yor«, March 28.—For the last twenty- four hours ending at 9 o'clock this morning three deaths from the grip were reported, mak- ing a total for the week of fourteen, ILWAUKEE, Wis., March 28.—John Plank- ington, the millionaire pork packer and former partner of P. D. Armour, is ill with the grip and not expected to recover. ‘Wanasu, Ixp., March 28.—City physicians say that there are from_1,500 to 2.000 casos of the grip here, and that the number of patients is on the increase. There have, however, been no deaths from the disease. Pirtsevne, March 28.—Nelson P. Reed, senior Proprietor of the Pittsburg Commerciai-Ga- 2etle, is lying very low with the grip. His re- covery is doubtful. ecclissi: STRUCK A CABLE CAR, Narrow Escape From a Terrible Disaster at a Chicago Grade Crossing. Curcaco, March 28.—A Baltimore and Ohio switch engine pulling # heavily loaded train of freight cars collided with @ State street cable train at the 16th street crossing last evening. The grip car and first trailer were demolished and sixty passengers had a most miraculous escape from a terrible death. The freight train had just rounded a curve and was going west with a full head of steam on. James Dil- lon, the engineer, had no mity to eee the approaching ‘grip, as two latge buildings aba on the street obstructed the view on | either side of the track. ‘The cable train was made up of two trailers and the grip car. ‘The engine struck the latter in the middle and the fifteen occupants were buried through the air. The greatest confusion was in the closed car following the grip. Ac- cording to the conductor | there were forty-five passengers in this car. As soon as the ‘shock was felt they all made”s mad rush for the rear door. ‘The exit was too small and the frenzied passengers who had not been jostled to the floor when the train was struck pulled and tugged in their enraged en- deavor to extricate" themeelves. ‘The ladies babes fainted and Mrs. Boyle was knocked down while trying: to get out. She was trampled upon aud received very painful bruises about the body. Mrs. Morgan had her wrist sprained and several other passengers were jised and cut about the head. If the cable train had been ten feet further across the tracks the loss of life would have been appalling. ae DE. CROSBY VERY Low. The Talented Clergyman Not Expected to Survive the Day. New Youx, March 28.—The Rev. Dr. Howard Crosby was reported to be very low this morn- ingand it is not expected that he will live through the day. At8 o'clock Dr. Conrad re- ported there was a slight change for the better in his patient. —Seieaeae RELICS FROM THE “HERMITAGE.” ‘Mementos and Photographs to Be Used in Publishing a Life of Jackson, ‘Special Dispatch to The Evening Star.
