Owing to the inclement weather there was not the usual large attendance at Dr. Ham- mond’s meeting last night, but there was no | lack of interest in the meeting. Mr. Parnell's envoys, Messrs. O'Kelly, O'Con- nor, Harrison and Redmond, held their first public meeting in the Cooper Institate in New York last evening. When. the last home-rule delegation first appeared in New York it was at a gathering that taxed the capacity of the great Metropolitan Opera House. The governor of the state presided, and the stage and boxes were filled with hundreds of public official well-known clergymen and prominent citizen: who subscribed in an hour nearly $37,000. At the Cooper Institute last evening all these’sur- roundings were conspicuously absent. About 2,500 to 3,000 persons sat in the body of the hall of Cooper Union and listened. Felton, republican, was elected United States Senator on first ballot in San Francisco yesterday to succeed the late George Hearst, democrat. The successful candidate was born in Erie county, N. ¥., in 1882. Before he had a chance to complete his education he took the Califor- nia gold fever, and in 1849, when only seven- teen years of age, made his way to the Pacific and worked for a time at mining at Marysville. He soon went into politics, becoming under sheriff of Yuba county in 1856.
