Prof. Snell States What in His Belief is True and What is False in the Blavatsky Teach- ings. ‘Mr. Merwin-Marie Snell, secretary to the rector of the Catholic University of America, lectured yesterday afternoon in the University hall on the subject of “The Truths of Theoso- phy.” ‘No school of thought has ever arisen,” he said, “which did not make its contribution to human progress, not one whose influence we could wish to blot out from human history.” ‘Theosophy, he said, has its evangel of truth. Its syncretism is false in so far as it abolishes the eternal distinction between truth and error and rejects the authority of the charch; but it is true in so far as it asserts the original iden- tity of all religions and the importance of the stady of archaic literature. Its monism is false, because it denies the distinction between mind and matter and the Creetor of them both. Its thaumaturgy is false in so far as it justi- fies ations with superhuman or sub- telligences, especially with fallen an- gels or supposed spirits of the dead, but true im 0 far as it insists upon the existence of be- ings and forces which modern xcience has not discovered. Its inysticism ix false, in so far as it professes to derive the fundamental truths of religion from au unauthenticated inner light, | or aims at the extinction of the human person- ality, but true in so fur as it emphasizes the importance of the interior life and inspires to the ascent of the mountain of perfection. In the course of the lectuce Mr. Snell de- scribed at some length the supposed arkasa or astral light, which is claimed to be the chief instrument of “high magic” snd also the ele- mental spirits, corresponding to the fairies of popular tradition, who are supposed to be con- wolled by the magician. He showed that the- osophiy condemned the practice of spiritism | and all forms of necromancy. Referring to the | probable elements of truth in occult science he said that the occulists, im the light of recent | scientisie investigation, were able to make a | very strong case. Modern ph; has redis- | covered their ether and affirms with them the | corrclation of forces; chemical science is on the verge of a demonstration of the unity of matter and no lorger scoffs at the transmiuta- tion of the elements; biological science dis- covers worlds within worlds of living beings | hitherto unseen and unimagined; psycholog short, in every case in which a coutroveray be- tween occult and exoteric science as ap- proached a definite settlement, the latter has turned out to be in the wrong. In discussing the teachings of the oriental sacred books, to which thcosophy calls our particular attention, the speaker maintained by act e Buddhist gospel the “pari- nib! that Buddha expressly stated | that he taught no esoteric doctrines whatever. The areh ratures appear to tecch ife concluded by predicting an tmexampled ssduring the coming century in the intellectual and spiritual reals bara ‘The work of clipping the ears of bulldogs and other canines was discussed in the Police Court this morning when Frank W. Moulton, a dog fancier, was called upon to answer a charge of cruelty to animals preferred against him by | of the Humane Society. Lawyer H. E. Davis defended Mr. Moulton. ‘The alleged cruelty consisted in clipping the ears of the dogs. Mr. Moulton told of how the dogs aro ether- ized before the operation is performed in order to prevent pain or cruelty. “It has been the universal custom,” he said, “to clip their ears.” “And it used to be the custom for men to bore holes through their noses,” added the Judge, “but civilization has grown aliead of ii Judge Miller wanted to know if there were any decisions on this question and counsel said he thonght there were none. Mr. Moulton said that since the warrant was issued he had written to the secretary of the ew York Kennel Club and his reply was that no such case had been prosecuted before and he considered it perfectly nonsensical. The judge thought that the dog was entitled to his ears and tail and aaid that the publiz was interested in the dog untrimmed and un- adorned. As the question was one of con erable importance, the judge said, he woul | tuke it under advisementand dispose of it within ten days. —— The Golden Cross. The Secret is Out. Housekeepers are finding out that many baking powders contain ammonia ; perhaps they have tested them; possibly they have caught the pungent and suggestive fumes from a “fresh” can of ammoniated powder. No wonder the manufacturers are afraid to let the people know what such powders are made of. There is no “patent medicine” mystery about Cleveland's Baking Powder. It is not only free from ammonia and all adulterants, but the composition is plainly stated on every can.
