John Williams Celebrates It by Beating His Wife. John Williams, a young colored man who lives in Dove's alley, got drunk last night and celebrated the first anniversary of his marriage by whipping his wife. Not satistied with doing that he cut the pictures and bedding in pieces with his razor and broke up the furniture with his hatchet. Policeman Proctor came along and was at- tracted to the house by hearing the woman's piteous appeals for help, and he found John beating the one who was not his better half from a pugilistic standpoint. When he appeared before Judge Miller this morning John was sorry for what he had done and promised not to 80 if the court would excuse him this time, but Judge Miller he would be excused after payment of a fine of $10. ALEXANDEIA. ‘To PURGE THE PRIMARIES. ‘There seems to be no doubt that far more in- ‘ha. | terest will be shown in the coming spring elec- tions than has been displayed before for many ‘The town is now governed by the demo- cratic primaries and there has lately grown up among leading gentlemen of the democratic party a conviction that if any forward move- ment in the publie interest is to be looked for they must first purge the primaries. A move- ment for this px was initiated afew weeks ago and is now being quietly pressed on. It is said that the new departure contemplates the removal of about one-half of the members of the city councii. No movement outside the democratic party ha been made, but as it has been the custom Se party to run an oj position ticket, such a ticket will doubtless be in the field next May. THE MAYoR's OFFicE.
