Miller, who was recently commit- ted to St. Elizabeth's Hospital for the Insane, writes to Tar: Star that the publications con cerning his commitment have greatly misrep- rerented his case. “In the first place,” he says, “there is no |eense in comparing me with Guiteeu. I was | not an applicant for a government position, nor did I entertain a single hostile thought against the Prosident or any public officer. The state- ment that I was present at the depot when the President returned from his trip west last May is thoroughly falec. I was not near the depot. | So is the statement that I addrewed letters to [foreign potentatea. Not one letter to them has | ever been forwarded by me. These misstatements appear to have been gotten up out of whole cloth by an officer in order to influence public opinion and give color to his subsequent illegal arrest of a peace- able, law-nbiding citizen, and the taking him away from honest employment under the im- putation of insanity, when that citizen was | simply carrying out (as any other citizen had | the right todo) legal advice in regard to se- | curing protection against invasion of his lawful rights. That I was nota dangerous nan in any | sense of the: term the facts showed. William Pratt, colored hostler in Allison Nailor’s stable, assaulted his wife last night with a knife and shot at her with a revolver, at their home, 2114 E street northwest. She ran from the house, complained to the police, and Wil- liam was taken out of bed and carried to the station and locked up. ‘This morning when the case was calle in the Police Court Judge Miller directed « warrant tent to kill. His wife told her story of the affair and exhibited a terribly swolleneye which had been caused by # blow inflicted by her hus- band. Other witnesses who heard the shot fired were present. The officer produced the pistol and knife which he found in Pratt's overcoat pocket. When he placed Pratt under arrest the latter threatened to “fix” his wife for causing his arrest.
