4 TH E EVENING STAR. bas the fullest Local Cireslation of any Newspaper in the World, and as an Advertising Mediam in worth more than all the other papers pablished in Washington. THE EVENING STAR The American Historical Society, which is to convene in this city in a few days in annual session, is one of the most important bodies in the republic in the field which it océupies ‘and the results which it achieves. American history, from very humble beginnings, has developed into ® department of learning second to no other pursed by our citizens. ‘Time was, and that only a few decades ago, when the histories of the United States were meagre in recorded eventa and ill written, the state histories were scarce and poor with one or two exceptions, the state historical collec- tions and the government collections were few in number, imperfect in form and matter and inaccurate in the statement of facts. All this has been changed, in «ome of the states in (olo, in others measurably. The development of the historical spirit was due, perhaps, first to the general advance in culture and incidentally to materia! progress, next to the appearance of the early volumes of Mr. Bancroft’s great History of the United States and Prescott’s and Irving's histories of the Spanish conquests in America. Historica! societies were formed. ‘The writing of winor memoirs and of state his tories followed. There bal been before that period historical sweietics and some re- spectable biographies, but with the epoch of which mention is here made the real begining took place of American Bistorical writing. The work thus started has rewalted in the creation of a fine school of American historiaus, almost equal to the older sehool in England or th= critical school of the present time in England and Germany. It is eren superior in style to the critical school, while it has many of the latter's excelle ‘The labors of Johus Hopkins and other univer- fittes siuce the clove of the civil war have also Deen remarkably fruitful. Tux Srar extends in advance a cordial greeting to the members Of the American Historical Society. Washing- ton iva pleasant place aud with itt numerous special advantages the very best place fur the meembling of learned societies in regular and called seasons. ~~ The “business manager" of the Post defends his disobedience of the unanimous direction of the board of trade to its officers (200 members being present) to appear before Congress in vppesition te the Atkinson bill by the fact that long afterward an obscure weekly paper printed What purported to be the opinions of a few member of the board, criticising the board's action, most of whom stated that they had never attended a board meeting. He also claims a “vindieation” because in company with nine other retiring directors he was for- mally re-elected, the attention of the board not being called to bis action in this matter. At the same meeting at which the formal ballot was cast for him in company with the other di- rectors, the president of the board made his annual report «ining the railroad action and policy of the or z«nization in a manner which amounted to a condemnation of this director's course, and he recognized it as sueh by cutting out all reference to :from his newspaper's ac- count of the meeting. The president's address was adopted, and several thousand copies were ordered to be printed and distributed, and the president was re-clected to his office. It is im- possible to discover any condonement of treachery to the city or to the board of trade im the railroad matter in the action of this meeting, or im any other official expression by the bourd. —+eo—__— According to the reports received by the agricultural newspapers of Springfield, Mase., after a three months’ canvass, and 110,000 Yotes cast, Mr. Cleveland leads as demo- cratic presidential candidate among the farmers of the country, Gov. Hill fall- ing behind by 54,600. Mr. Blaine has 39,209 to Mr. Harrison's 31,013 and “Unele Jerry” Rusk booms out with over 20,000. Hatch of Missouri is a Richmond in the field with 11,082, and “Scattering” is a candidate with 26,000 and more. Two tickets, to wit, Cleveland and Hatch and Blaine and Rusk, may grow out of this straw vote, as covering more nearly the new field opened by the cyclone of November last. +2 ____ ‘The German government is munificent and far-seeing in. its encouragement of science. It has endowed exploring parties in all parts of the world, aiding Emin in Africa, Curtius in Greece and less famous men elsewhere. It is Teported that in addition to other aids hereto- fore extended or agreed upon Dr. Koch is to have a million of marks and his assistants ‘half that sum for the manufacture of the Koch lymph for the cure of consumption. += _ “Tar Stan in its charge that Sena- tors and Members who sup the Atkinson Dill, and all who advocated the measure, are a corrupt and venal lot of people."— Wasingion ‘Tue Stan has never made any such charge and the Post knows it. There has been no in- distinctness in this paper's words. The Post knows perfectly well against whom the charge of venality is leveled and whom ithits. It will not avail the lobby press to wriggle and squirm and desperately attempt to drag others, who were not purchasable, into the deserved pablic odium which has fallen upon it. Every word on this subject in the editorial in yester- day's Sran is true, and is met only by a dodg- jag of the issue and an attempt to conceal the evasion in a cloud of fishwife seolding and per- somal abuse. ee Out of 110,000 answers by farmers to inquir- fas addreseed # them by a combination of New England and Chicago agricultural journals it was learned that sentiment at the time of the poll was pretty evenly divided between those who favor and those who oppose goverment ownership of railroads. A large number who eppose the ownership advocate control by other means. A majority urge government aid to agricultural edueation. ‘These are the hal- eyon days of the newspaper inquirer, and the interviewer is now the printed circular. Ma- chine methods have extended from polities to the collection of news. ——seo—___ The overwhelming victory of the anti-Par- nellites at North Kilkenny—where their majority was over 1,100—onght to solve the Irish prob- lem. To the friends of home rale this election must hare great significance, as it seems to Point the way to the withdrawal of Parnell and ‘the union of the home rulers under another leadership. ee ‘There are three ways ir which Senate leaders would like to lead that body, but as yet they have not been able either to take the fork of the Toad that goes to Cloture, the fork that points to Federal Election, or the Finarce thorough- +2 once & year, but when it comes it’s Christmas. ———— ieee ee ‘The new thirty-foot gun tested at Asbury Park yesterlay threw shells fifteen miles out into the wea Let the good work go onand one of these days we may sit at our own fire- sides and carry on bloody wars with the effete nationalities beyond tho sea.
