K STREET NORTHWEST. Dix Goons. A Wedding Postponed for Over Thirty Years ‘Takes Place Today. “I have seen descriptions of a good many swell weddings in the society column of Taz Sran lately,” said the colonel from Virginia to 9 Stan reporter, “but I was present ats quiet simple ceremony over in Georgetown today that was to those who knew about it a genuine Fomance, the kind you read of in novels but very seldom run across in real life. I guess T'm the only person in town besides the bride and groom and perhaps one other who knows of the true love story which culminated today in the marriage of Rev. Dr. J. Henry Davis and Miss Annie A. Hunter at Christ Church, in Georgetown, by the Rev. Dr. Stewart. This is no fairy tale I'm to tell you, for I've just put the marriage notice in Taz Star. “OVER THIRTY YEARS AGO Annie Hunter was a pretty, red-cheeked maid belonging to a well-known Virginia family. That was before the war, when the hospitable Virgi ters kept open house, and when a Nocee fulof quettwel on crerp-iny sera rence. Annie Hunter happened to be visiting at the home of her bosom friend during a Presbyterian convention in the village: ministers were scattered about at the different houses, and among the guests at this particular mansion was agoung theological student who had just passed his examination for the minis- try, and the brilliancy of his examination was the tulk of the whole country round about. He was as handsome as he was bright. He re- mained long enough to become quite fascinated with pretty Annie Hunter and for her friend to be greatly taken with him. Neither of these facts were known, however, until later. A week or #0 after his Annie Hunter received a letter from the youn minister. It was a great surprise to the girl, for while it did not contain pro exactly it was so worded as to mean that if replied to in a similar spirit. It took Mise Hunter only about two days to realize that she was really in love with the handsome young man and she roceeded to writea reply. While engaged in e pleasant task her intimate friend entered Annie's room. “Now,here is where the novelist might got in his work. ‘Oh! you are writing a letter, An- nie?’ she said. ‘Well, I'm going to the village and will mail it for you.’ “Oh, never mind,’ said Annie. ‘I won't trouble you, but will send it by the post, boy.’ “But her friend insisted, and the result was that the fair letter writer sealed her missive and entrusted it to her friend's care. THE LETTER THAT NEVER CAME. “She knew about what day to expect an answer, and when that day had passed and no letter came and then months followed weeks the girl felt much chagrined, but her pride prevented her from telling any one of hor trouble. She endeavored to banish the mem- ory of her fickle lover. The whole thing was secret for several years, when @ mutual friend told the disappointed girl that the letter had years later the same false friend prevented what would have been a happy marriage with another suitor she could doubt no longer. She never told her secret though, and it was only Years afterward that the family knew the story. e young minister was called toa thriving city, | became prominent and valar, and in the | | course of years married. All this Annie Hunter | heard from time to time, and could not help | | thinking what her lot might have been. She | was still very attractive, and before she reached | | middle life received numerous offers of mar- | | riage. She was engaged more than once, but | the engagements all came to nothing.” She | told me this morning why it was that she didn't | marry. She didn't know the reason herself though until last year. ‘THE OLD stony. “There wasa Presbyterian convention in Win- chester then, which was attended by Rev. Dr. Davis, a more than middle-aged minister. He heard in some way, that Annie Hunter was in the neighborhood and wrote @ polite note ask- ing permission to call to renew an old friend- | ship. The request was granted. Tho minister came. He did not find the pretty girl who won his heart over thirty years ago, but his old | love was reawakened. “Annie then learned for the first time that he was a widower and he |learned for the first. time of the letter that | never came. It didn’t take long for them to | come to an understanding. They were maz ried today. And now about the false girl friend who postponed this wedding for over thirty years. She lives not very far from here. “She is married toa man she doesn't love, has no | children and altogether doesn’t lead a very happy life. and when she reads tonight's Stax her reminiscences will not be very pleasant.” WILL WE HAVE A CLUB? ‘The Prospects for the Coming Base Ball Season—Washington's Chances. “There is no reason why Washington should not be @ star base ball city next year,” said Michael Scanlon to a Stak reporter today. “We are offered a place in the American asso- ciation, which will be stronger than it ever has been before. Players and managers acknowl- edge that the circuit is better than any of ita predecemors and predict that it will stand for many years. Just see what an admirable arrangement: Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington in the east, and Louisville, Columbus, St. Louis and Chicago in the west. They are all good base ball cities, and the new rule that tie visiting club is to get half of the gate reogipts will prove a boom to Washington. All clubs will then stand on an equal footing.” “How about the players?” asked Tuz Stan reporter. “There is no question about players. The market is overstocked. Many brotherhood | on players will be available, for some who jumped will not be taken back into the league, while all the American Association men to the brotherhood will be compelled to return to the association, if wanted. Besides, a great many yi year. We can have eny of the men that went from here to Buffalo, but I think that three will be all that we will want—Mack, | 50 feet to the Bey and Haddock. Such men as Stricker, sec- | Si! ond baseman. and Smiley, third basemag, from | Cleveland, will probably be available. Oh, we can get a strong team if——" “If what?” said Tae STAB man. “If enough money is put up asa guarantee fand to warrant making @ start. Everything will be plain sailing then. About half of the amount required—$20,000—has been guaran- teed.
