When Chauncey I. It is thought that there will be a lively contest among the lawyers in the 26th circuit for the appointment. Mr. J. F. Green of Jefferson county, and Mr. J. W. Em- erson of Iron county are named in connection with the race. Judge O..M. Spencer, of St. Joe, MRS, ANNIE BAXTER’S Fischer Repudiated at the Polls, Wants It on a Technicality. Carthage, Mo., Nov. 28.—Two more contests as a result of the late election in this county have been an- nounced. Julius Fischer, the defeat- ed candidate for county clerk, filed papers claiming the office on the ground that his successful opponent was a woman and therefore not eligi- ble. It is conceded by everybody that no man in the county is as com- petent for the office as Mrs. Baxter and many republicans do not like the contest business. As for the con- testant it has been remarked that he is not much of a man or he would not object to his successful oppo- nent being a lady. The contest will be interesting to all, and when de- cided will set at rest the question of eligibility of women for office. The other contestant is Judge Hopkins, defeated by Judge W. H. Kilgore, D, re-elected for the fourth term. The charge of illegal voting ismade. Both cases wifl, be heard in the March term held in this eity. IMBUED with THE CRAZE. OFFICE, aa xoal Indians Adjacent to Oklahoma Con- yerts tothe Messiah Intatuation. Guthrie, Ok., Nov. 28.—The tribes of the territory adjacent to Oklaho- /pa proper have become imbued with he Messiah idea and a ghost dance in progress to-night, in which Utes and Missouris were the leading gpirits. A number of the leaders of hose tribes were here to-day and ére greatly excited over the state affairs prevailing. They are firm ivers in the Messiah doctrine. ‘uch uneasiness prevails among ttlers as to the final outcome. | Whistler and Keokuk of the Sac and fox tribes were in town all day in onference with leading citizens. They announced thata ghost dance had been arranged for to-morrow night about eighteen miles from the city. The same feeling of uneasiness Pas taken possession of the Potawat- ‘omies and Kickapoos. From the Youth’s Companion. A Kansas City school teacher was one day asking her scholars what they wanted to be or do when they were men and women. She received various answers. One child wished to be a farmer, an- other a merchant, another a banker, another a school teacher, and so on. Some answered, “I don't know.” Finally she came to Susie Benley, a nice little girl 8 years old. “Well Susie, what do you want toj_ be when you grow up?” | Susie arose and demurely replied, | to the amusement and —— of the teacher. “I want to bea married lady, and; keep house.” A Rare Chance ‘ Is now offered you to decorate your homes with beautiful crayon portraits and other pictures made by your own hands.
