The British Torpedo Cruiser Serpeat Sunk With All Her Crew. During a storm Monday night the British torpedo cruiser Serpent foundered off the coast of Spain, and out of a total of 250 souls on board only three were saved. The Serpent ‘was lost at a point twenty miles north of Cape Finisterre by going on the rocks. A heavy mist prevailed at the time of the disaster. Owing to the violence of the storm it was im- possible to send assistance from the shor Tremendous seas swept the decks of the doomed vessel, carrying away group after group of the unfortunate men on board. The news of the wreck was conveyed to Corunna, a distance of sixty miles, over mountain roads. ‘The Serpent's complement was 175 officers and men. ‘The others on board were going out to relieve men now on ships on the African sta- tion. The Serpent was a twin-screw vessel of 1,770 tons and 4,500 horse power. She carried sx guns. Lord George Hamilton, first lord of the ad- miralty, made s speech last night ats con- sevative banquet at Acton. He began by an- nouncing the loss of the British war ship Serpent. He said: “I am sorry to say that just before I came here I received a telegram say- ing that the torpedo cruiser — had been lost the Spanish coast. I there haa been a great loss of life. The Serpent was ole of our best cruisers and was a valuable vessel, She had excellent officers and @ fine crew. I cannot tell the cause of the disaster.” This announcement caused a momentary sensation among the guests, but apparently the startling news was quickly forgotten. Lord Hamilton made an unusually rollicking speech, woking frequent outbursts of laughter. The incident was a topic of conversation in the => late last — and was generally de- mounced as scan QUITE THE OPPOSITE. The Duke of Edinburgh was attending a Patti comcert at Plymouth when the news of the disaster reached that town. He was im- mediately informed of the calamity and at once left the concert hall and hastened to the various newspaper offices in search of further details. After reading all the dispatches that had been received concerning the disaster he went directly home without returning to the concert ball He expressed the utmost sor- row at the fate that bad overtaken so many brave men. The newspaper offices at Plymouth were be- sieged by crowds of people anxious to hear farther news of the disaster. Among these were the sobbing wives and daughters of many of the lost seamen. It is stated that many of the crew of the Ser- t agv before the vessel started on what proved be her last voyage ea the fear that some misfortune would befall the Shp The relatives of the crew of the Serpent at Py yath and the dock-yard people there are full of gossip about the lost cruiser. It is claimed that she was unseaworthy and that she broke down on all her trial trips. Comman Ross is said to have been in the habit of treat- ing bis men with undue severity. HER MAIDEN VOYAGE. Evicting Irish Tenants, The work of evicting tenants was resumed THE EVENING: STAR: WASHINGTON RUNNING TO COVER, The Clubs of the Players’ League Seek- Consolidation, ing ‘The base ball war is practically over, The New York, Brooklyn and Pittsburg clubs have agreed upon terms and consolidated and Chi- cago club Bas offered to sell out. This leaves the Boston, Philadelphia and Cleveland clubs in the lurch. It is barely possible that these clubs will continue next season im another Organization, but this rests entirely with the old magnates, The determination of the capi- talists in the New York Players’ League Club to Consolidate was the entering wedge that split the Players’ League. Once started there was 8 rush to cover. Al Jehnson and Prince of Boston were the only ones who held out for consolidating the two Jeagues, Through the influence of the New Yorkers the various clubs began negotiations on a basis = élub consolidation instead of agua aeaea idation. Asa consequence those that could not arrange of eonsoli- dation like the Bostons, Clevelands and Cincin- natis were left out in the cold. The now the mercy of the Nati which will not trea treat with the wpa ee, mittee appointed by the players. — men as Kelly, Ewing, Keefe, Richardson and Hanion will be taken back into the leagae fold, but there will doubtless be many brotherhood men without a — next season. It “trove of all negotiations for peace on a basis of league con- toltdation lonscanir ay eel peoereg certainly ve been effec! ‘ompromise is impossible | ‘“* now. It will be a surrender. MIKE KELLY’S PRUDENCE. ‘The players are already beginning a stam- pede back tothe National League magnates. Those who are coping are doing it quietly. They realize that the jig is up. Last night Mike Kelly had s secret talk with A, G. Spald- ing. Kelly sees how things are and is desirous of getting in out of the cold. Kelly waited around the side entrance of the Fifth Avenue, hid | in the darkness, until the meeting of the league was over. He sent word to A. G. Spalding that be wished to see him, and as soon as possible. Spaiding, with his characteristic way of mak- a invisible, was away before anybody THE CONSOLIDATED GIANTS. Now that the New York Club has formally resigned from the Players’ League the two New York clubs are consolidated. Ewing will make up the team, and as it stands at present it will be as foliows: Pitchers—Keefe, Welsh, Rusie, Sharrott, J. Ewing. Catchers—Ewing, Buckley, Clark, Brown and Murphy. Infiel: ers—Connor, Richardson, Glasscock, Denny and Whitne: A Outfielders—Tiernan, Slattery, O'Rourke and Gore. Bassett will probably go to Boston, while the Philadelphia (N.L.) elub has a line out for Whistler. The following list of officers of the club are slated: President, Jobn B. Day; vice president, E. B. Talcott; secretary, F. H. Robinson; treas- urer, Arthur H. Bell; manager, James Mutrie; captain and field manager, William Ewing; di- rectors, E. A. McAlpin, J. B, Day, E. B. Tal- cott, F. H. Robinson, C. T. Di ingham and Joseph Gordon. This will give the National and Players’ League backers an equal representation on the board of directors. HOW PITTSBURG CONSOLIDATED. J. Palmer O'Neil showed the signed consoli- dation papers of the two Pitteburg clubs toa Philadelphia Press reporter last night, and also told how the consolidation took place. He said that at the Philadelphia meeting the Pittsburg (P.L.) delegates were insulted by the Bostou people, who told the Pittsburg men that if couldn't put up money for next season they could get out. They came back to Pittsburg and notified Mr. O'Neil that settle- ment might be effected. All came together, and Mr. O'Neil told them th: settlement could be made on a 50 per cent basis, but that it must be made then and there. ‘There was no diseussion at all, but before half an hour was up the agreement had been The Pittsburg team, Mr. 0” tes, will next season be as follows: Pitchers, ‘Maul, Gal- yin, J. Smith, Staley; catchers, Mack, Decker, Berger; mfielders, Beckley, Laroque, Miller, T. Corcoran; outfielders, Burke, Hanlon, Fields, THE BOSTONS FROZEN OUT. The only club that will be likely to suffer or, in fact, frozen out, will be the Boston Players’ League Club. There is no place for itin any league. The backers are old stockholders of the National League team, and Messrs, Conaiit, Soden and ings will never consolidate with them, THE OTHER CLUBS. “What will be done with Cincinnati?” was asked President Byrne, jothing. That city is still in the National League and you may depend on it it will be there next season, and the team also. The in- ference is that certain persons who at present are remaining in the background will buy the club from the present Pla ayers’ ‘League owners.” John B. Day was asked if the Cleveland oa L.) people would be allowed to make an: they saw fit. “Idon’t think they will the say,” said Mr. Duy. “It may be left ne : third party to appraise the value of Johnson's base ball belongings. Johnson had a chance to make « compromise in Cleveland, but at the last minute he went back an it.” Just as the league met yesterday a telegram was received from Pittsburg stating that ‘Addi- son of Chicago would dispose of his club for #5 .000. He had been offered by Spalding 15.000. The price will probably be paid. In Philadelphia the Players’ League Club will gre @ chance to join the American Asso- ciation. The statement bres oy from Pittsburg that W: hington had lied for admission to the Players’ League ridiculed in base ball circles here. Mr. Hewitt and Mr. Scanlan are the only ones at all repr to have the manage- ment of a base ball team here. The former said yesterday that he had spent all the money in base ball that he intended to, and the latter is known as profoundly hostile to the Players’ League. He will probably have ateam next year in this city representing the American association, THE HONDURAN REVOLT. Central America Agitated Over the Prospect ot a General War.
