The proposed celebration here next April of the centennial of the first patent issued by the United States, or in other words the inaugura- tion of the second century of the American patent system, has excited considerable interest among citizens. In connection with the cele- bration it is expected to havo a convention of inventors and probably an exhibition of models, which will be unique, interesting and instrue- tive. It will show the highest levels reached by American inventive genius. An adjourned meeting of citizens and others interested in the project is to be held this evening in the as- sembly rooms at the Arlington. The members of the board of trade and all other citizens in- terested have been invited. ———— Paying Off Jay Cooke’s Debts. The trustee of the estate of Jay Cooke & Co. announces the payment of the final dividend upon claims presented before Monday next. The final dividend will be 1% per cent in cash on $6,451,000 and 8!¢ shares of Northern Pacific stock, 312 shares Oregon Steams! and Navigation Company stock and 3 of a share of preferred stock of the St. Paul and Duluth rail- road to each #1,000 of claim to creditors hold- ing that amount and upward. With the pay- ment of the final dividend the affairs of the estate of Jay Cooke & Co. will bo wound up, and the total amount of cash paid on it wil have been 15! per cent on $6,451,000. ‘The liabilities when the firm crashed in the memor- able year 1873 were nearly $11,000,000.
