It was a violent abuse of Barttelot and an intended vindication of himself, I never answered that letter because 1t needed a personal interview, as there were many questions I found it necessary to ask him myself covering points which were not touched upon in the letter, principal question being why he with others preferred to remain and starve at Yambuya instead of moving on. I never could get a satisfactory answer from Bonney, so I hoped to Pose one from Troup. I wanted to know why they pri ferred staying at Yambuya until so many of their men had died of fever or been killed, Jeaving only Bonney in charge. I wanted to ask why they preferred to wait while all the timo it was understood that they were burning with desire to start. That is the one question I wanted to get an answer before I replied to Troup. He got impatient st my silence and wrote me another letter which contained more sionally. He is not permitted to read the newspapers, in which he once delighted, and his knowledge of the election results last Wed- nesday a only such as the general run of men behind the bars got by hearsay. He took great interest in the composition of Congress, where he once sat asa Represent- ative from Maryland, and when told that the House was safely democratic showed genuine pleasure. He is not permitted to talk or laugh with the other prisoners except on special bol- idays, such as Christmas and Thanksgiving, and obeys every regulation with painstaking dili- gence. Not asinglo mark for misconduct has yet been made against him, and if he continues to do as well his tive years’ term will be up September 6, 1893. Two months’ commutation ean be earned each year by good conduct. All who associate with the once honored and re- spected treasurer say his courtesy and self Possession are as noticeable as ever.
