John Croghan, a tall man with side whiskers, appeared before Judge Miller this morning and accused Thos. T. Kane, the butcher, of assault, John was in the Center Market Saturday and he heard a boy at Mr. Kane's staud langh. It was not an offense to laugh, but the tall man with whiskers felt offended becanse he thought the boy laughed at him, and he went to see Mr. Kane, as he wanted to have the boy arrested. During the conversation, he asserts, Mr. Kane pushefl him and henco the charge. Judge Miller was partieularly anxious to lear saopine: about the laugh. but Croghan was unable to give much information on that —— The judge thought that Croghan wonld be kept busy if be attempted to investigate every laugh he heard. The charge against Mr. Kane was dismissed. — The C.M.E. Appointments. The Virginian conference of the C.M.E. Church, which assembied last Wednesday in Lawrenceville, has just adjourned. Last evening Samuel Gallaban, aged sixty- four years, had his leg broken by his horse run- ning away on Livingston road in the - county, wrecking the wagon and throwing him out. He it was returning to his home in Prince George's county, and Mr. Bacon Dyer removed him first to the substation at Anacostia and then with the aid of the police to Providence Hospital. Two Small Fires. At 5:40 o'clock yesterday afternoon a fire took place in house No. 1524 Kingman court (near P and 14th ‘streets northwest), occupied by A.S. Cole, originating in the front room on the second fluor. It was extingdished with a loss of €200. A slight fire took place in the alley in the rear of 2035 L.street northwest, occupied by Eliza Myer, and the loss was but nominal. James Gallagher Acquitted. Yesterday afternoon John Proby, indicted for larceny, was brought into the Criminal Court and committed to jail, He and a man named Weeks were chiirged with the larceny of a sil- ver watch and chain from Edward McCue Au- gust 2, 1886. He gave bail in the Police Court for his appearance and in the following Decem- ber the bail was forfeited. Weeks was tried, convicted and senteneegto-eighteen months in the penitentiary. Mra, Kate Devinney;-who--keeps a notion store at 13th and F streets northeast, was sus- pected by Ofticer Curtis of selling strong drinks without a license. Sunday night the ofticer heard several persons in her store. As soon as Prell saw the bluec-coated guardians he threw the beer bottle under the counter and upset the glass of beer. The annual visitation of the grand master and officers of the Grand Lodge to Lafayette Lodge, No. 19, F.A.A.M., last evening wes the occasion fora display of the hospitality for which that lodge is noted. The worship- ful master. Mr. James H. Wardle, was, as usual, the lite of the compauy and the evening was one of much social enjoyment. Died of His Injuries. James Cater, a colored man twenty-one years old, was working on the Tenleytown road Wedaesday afternoon, when the root of alarge tree fell down the bank and injured him. He was removed to Freedman’s Hospital, where it was found that he had sustained a compound fracture of the hip and had also re- ceived severe internal injuries, He died yeu- terday. A Reorganized Tennis Club. The Myrtle Tenuis Club at its fret annual meeting, held at Mrs. Darby’s home on M strect, decided upon s change of name and the club will now sail under the name of the Myrtle Club. The new club was orgamzed with the following officers: Mr. P. J.
