Impressive Services Over the Remains of the Late Haughwort Howe. THE CASKET COVERED WITH BEAUTIFUL FLORAL ‘TRINUTES—ELOQUENT WORDS OF REY. DR. BART™ LETT— DISTINGUISHED PERSONS PRESENT—THR BODY TAKEN TO NEW YORK FOR INTERMENT, So far as Washington is concerned the last act in the sad drama whose climax has been the death of a promising young man and the widow- ing of a most popular young iady and a bride of only a day was finished at the room of the international American couference on Vermont avenue this morning. It is safe to say that no funeral has ever taken piace in Washington, at least in recent years. which has created more genuine interest and sincere sympathy than that of Mr Haugh- | wort Howe, whose death was reported in yes terday’s Sram. With every prospect of « happy and useful career before him, next } Monday being the day set w he had hoped to lead to the altar a most estimable oung indy—Miss Mary Butterworth of this and Ohio—few men had more reason for wishing to hive. It ie apleasont thing for Mr. Howe's young widow and bis many friends to remember that bis last hours were rendered easier and his mind calmed and set at rest by the self-sacrific- ing devotion of the young lady who now sadly wears the emblems of widowhood When it was found that Mre Howe Was critically iil and that the thought thet he would be unable to fulfill his wedding engage ment was worrying the sick mind, Mins Butter- worth, with rare devotion, proposed that all formalities be dispensed with and the cere- mony be performed at once in the sick cham- ber. This was soon dove and on Wednesday Miss Butterworth became a bride, only to merge into a widow on the following Jay. SIMPLE BUT RPFECTIVE SERVICES, The funeral ceremonies today wore simple yet strangely effective. The funeral was intended to be entirely private, but hundreds of people were attracted by their acquaintance with the young couple and their sympathy for the bereaved wife. The services were performed by Rev. Dr, Bartlett and bis short address was a classic, As the eloquent passages were delivered scarcely adryeye was to be found in the crowded room. The remains were inclosed ina black casket, which was literally lost in the floral embiemé which relatives aud triends had p.aced on the last bed as a slight token of remembrance and sympathy, A large pillow of imortelles with the Spanish word “Adios,” was the gift from Mr. Howe's asso. ciates on the international American conter- ence. Mr. and Mrs, Blaine sont a large bunch of pink roses, while the clerks the St Department were represented by a maguifi wreath, Flowers were also received from Mr, and Mrs. William F. Ourtis, Mr, William Walter —— Mr. Sevelion Brown and from many others. During the sed but hopeful ceremony Mra, Howe was supported by Hon, Benjamim Butters worth, her father. The rooms were crowded to the door with sympathizing friends, SOME WHO WERE PRESENT, Among those present were Dr. and Mra, Reosa, the three brothers of Mrs. Howe, Sccre- tary Blaine, Mr. Wm, Walter Phelps, Assistant Secretary Adee, Minister Zagera, Mr. Wm, Tsescott, Mr. and Mre. J. W. Foster, Mr. W. P. Tisdel, ail the staff of the international con- ference, niauy clerks from the State Depart ment aud many others, The pall-bearers were Messrs. John B. Moore, assistant secretary of state; Wilham E. Curtis, exceutive ofticer of the international American conference; F. J. Kieckhoefer and George Bartie of the State Department; L P. Roosa of New York aud De, F. 0, St. Clair, Immediately after the services the remains were taken to the Pennsylvania depot and laced on the 11 o'clock train for New York, fhe dead man was accompanied on his last journey by his young bride, Dr. and Mra, pean Mr. Butterworth and Mr. and Mra. Mouiton. ‘The remains will be interred tomorrow im Dr. Roosa’s plot in Woodlawn cemetery. INCIDENTS OF THE DECEASED. Since Mr. Howe's sad death many, little inci. dents have been developed to add to the ro mantic interest that surrounds his marriage and death. One week ago Wednesday, whue Mr. Howe wag in New fork aud in seeming perfect health, be is kuowu tw have made a wiil, although what the document contains is uot known. Today several letiers were delivered at Mr. Howe's old room at the Metropolitan Club, one of which was from the Adams Ex- press Company iniorming him of the arrival of % puckage containing Mr. Howe's wedding clothes or those he designed for that purpose, Another article which hus been delivered at the club for the dead man isa Ia) portrait of Miss Butterworth, wh: ni have been presented to ber on the wedding day, —_——_ NAVAL CONSTRUCTION, The Defective Shatt Strut of the Maine— forged Stecl Versus Cast Steel. STEEL IN It is said at the Navy Department that the defect discovered in the cast steel strut which supports the starboard propeller armored cruiser Maine will not del: pletion of the vessel to any material extent, The ship way be launched in her presout condition, and a new strut can be made in time to put im place when the vessel is docked. The ouly loss suffered by the gov- ernment is in the time occupied in fitting the defective strut, The contractors who supplicd the defective piece are required under the con- tract to replace it. ‘This last failure in the use of large steel casting * iu maval construction has given addi- tioual force to the arguments made aguinst its use. In one case every one of about seventecn: cast steel columns intended tor one of the pew cruisers was found to be defective. Tho de- fects in that case, as im this, were of such a nature that they were not visible upon the surface of the castings. and were only developed upon finish- ing, consequently there is often grave doubts as to the soundness of castings that appear perfectly fair upou the surface. At least two of the largest ship building concerns engaged iu uaval construction have already endeavored to have wrought steel substituted for cast stecl in several of the contract requirements, and hav- ing regard to this last failure, and the fact that the forgings can be procured more speedily than perfect castings, it is probable that some changes of this kind will be authorized.
