H. Harris, sit- uated in Albemarie county, Va., was the scene on Wednesday evening last of the marriage of Miss Belle Montgomery Harris to Dr. William F. Morsell, the latter of this city. The bride was given away by her father and was gowned in faille Francaise, en traine, exquisitely orna- mented with orange blossoms und was attended by four maids—Miss Laura N. Mann of Wash- ington, D.C., and the ters of the bride Misses Harrie, Ida and Mary H. Harris—who carried bouquets of pink chrysanthemums and were tastefully dressed in cream-colored silk. The groom was attired in the conventional full dress, as was also his best man, Mr. Arthur L. Morsell of this city. The groomsmen were Messrs. John Hart of Roanoke, ¥. W. Moore of the University of Virginia and Dr. Wm. J. C. Wailer of North Garden, Va., friends of the bride. The scene of the wedding 1s a typical Virginia homestead, the natural beauty of which was enbanced interiorly by profuse decorations of autumn leaves and chrysanthe- mutis, The service was impressively and beau- tifully conducted by the js Daniei Blaine, the bride and groom standing beneath an arch- way of evergreens, from the crown of which depended an exquisite marriage bell composed of white chrysanthemums. The guests from Washington were a few relatives and closest personal friends of the par- ties, and were specially invited, the number being necessarily limited. The happy couple departed on the 9:50 pm. train for an extended southern trip. Both Dr. Morsell and Miss Harris are well known and esteemed in Washington. DANGEROUS TELEGRAPH PoLEe. Under the head of suggestive statements Mr. Miles says it is highly gratifying to be able to state that the fire-alarm telegraph continues to work with accuracy notwithstanding the fact that the lines are not inas good condition as they ought to be, It bas been the purpose of Congress as well as the desire of the District Comin ie fir becdeel years to put all electrie wires under ground, and in furtherance of the scheme Congress provided by in 1888 that after a certain date within that year no additional overhead wires should be erected in the city of Washington. In consequence of this purposd to have all telegraph ane tele- phone wires buried Mr. Mills says it has been impossible to secure the necessary appropri- ations for repairing the old poles with new. In consequence of this nearly all of the poles of the District até rotten and dangerous. SPEAKING OF AN UNDERGROUND SY8TEM for the wifes of the District, Mr. Miles says that whatever plan may be adopted it is evident that the lines will have to be reconstructed and erilarged. The fire- alarm telegraph has at this time 144 signal boxes distributed over seven signal circuits and four alarm circuits, upon which all the électri- cal devices connecting with the several engine and trick companies of the fire departinent are distributed. These eleven circuits are already overburdéned and yet their exist the re- port an argent necessity for a large im- crease of signal boxes—300 for city limita and fifty for suburban districts. If un- derground wires aro to be introduced Mr. Miles says it will be absolutely necessary to construct the sysiem with an adequate number of circuits for the rapid growing city for many Yeats to come because of the difficulty and e of adding new circuits after the plant been established. The introduction of electric street railways and electric lights with their high tension currents of electricity ren- ders it necessary to supply metallic circuits for nearly all telephone service In order to get rid of induction from these dynamo currents, THOROUGH RECONSTRUCTION RECOMMENDED, In view of the above Mr. Miles recommends ® thorough reconstruction of all the fire alarm and telephone wires belonging to the District of Columbia, together with an enlargement of the fire-alarm telegraph, and that all wires be put under ground and that metallie circuits be provided for all telephone lines to the end that induction from electric light and other high tonsion entrents of electricity may be neutral- ized.
