THE MAFIA OUTRAGE, New Orleans Police Satisfied With the Result of Their Work. SUNK BY A BAY LINE STEAMER. Express Companies Agree to Put Up Their Rates, AT A PITTSBURG FIRE. —--_—_ ALL QUIET IN NEW ORLEANS. The Police Believe That They Have All the Hennessey Assussins, ACCIDENT New Onxrans, Oct. 22—The situation here in the Italian case is quiet. The police believe they have allthe guilty parties under arrest with the evidence sufficient to convict them. There are fifteen persons in the parish prison, four charged as principals and the rest with being accessory before the fact. Scafiro. who was shot in the prison Friday by Tom Dutly, is now almost well and is able to walk about | the jail. The committee of fifty met last night | and denounced the search of the houses of Italians as an outrage. : Acable dispatch says: The murder of Chief of Police Hennessey in New Orleans has caused & good deal of discussion in Italy in regard to the much-talked-of secret society of Mafia. Many people deny the existence of such an | organization and declare that, while there ure | many small cliques anrong Italians and murder | is frequently resorted to from their private motives, yet there is no such world-wide organ- ization with common aims as the Mafia is de- scribed to be. On the other hand, several | leading Italian journals state that there is po | doubt that Italian secret socicties have | branches in America and that persons who incur their enmity cannot escape by changing | their place of residence. ‘The victims, how- ever, are generally fellow Italians, artd the killing of an American police officer has caused great surprise. The second trial of the Proven-Senoas for lying in wait and attempting to assassinate the Matranga gang was to have begun in the crimi- Bal court today, but owing to the feeling against the Italians the district attorney has consented to a postponement of the case, This isa great disappoimtment tothe public, who are antious that the case should be disposed of, as it was expected that the workings of the Mafia would come out. sh SUNK BY THE VIRGINIA.
