Yesterday afternoon at 8:45 o'clock Lieut. Heffner of the second police precint discovered that an insane prisoner—Christiana Chisley— had committed suicide in the witness’ room by choking herself with strips torn from a pillow case. The woman was found the night beforo on the street violently insane, and Officer Trammell and three others took her to the sta- tion yesterday about 1 o'clock. Dr. Kiein- schmidt examined her, finding that she was a lunatic, and recommended that she be sent to the government hospital at St. Elizabeth. This was about 1 p.m. Between that hour and 3:45 p.m., when she was seen by Lieut. Heffuer, she had torn her pillow case into strips, which she had tied tightly about her throat. Lieut. Heffner hastily summoned assistance and Dr. English responded. It was found that life was not quite extinct, and efforts were made to resuscitate her, but without euccess. Her mother, Cecelia Robbins, was sont for and stated to Coroner Patterson that the deceased bad been married about nine years, but her husband bad left her; that fora week past she had been insane, suffering with the hailucina- tion that she was uuder a spell; that she had been very restless, scarcely sloeping at all, and when she closed her eyes for ® moment she would jump up and go to beating off imaginary serpents and beetles. The coroner gave a cer- tificate of death andthe body was turned over to her friends, peoekahe Sergeant Haines won the Medal. Sergt. Haines won the compotitive drill medal of company C, Washington Light In- fantry Corps, last night. The drill was judged by Capt. “Burt” Koss, the comma: being given by Capt. Ourand, There were twenty- two competitors, ees The Veterans of 1861. The District veterans of 1861 met last night at St. George’s Hall, Mr. J. Bradbury presid- ing, and L. F. Clements, secretary. Thero was a large attendance and the meeting was an in- teresting one. The veterans gave a number of reminiscences, and discussed the prospects of the $100 bounty bill. The opinion was ex- pressed that the pension bill endangered the passage of the bounty bill, but many present urged that it was their duty to use ail honor- able means to secure the passage of the bill, although it would bo in the nature of a recog- nition for their services merely, as in many in- stances the amount would not’ more than pay the cost of the uniforms paid for by the volun- teers themselves and worn out in the service, —--—— Northern Excursionists in Town. Monday afternoon an unknown, short, stout, white man drove off with a horse and buggy belonging to Mrs. Sarah Brown of No. 815 Del- aw.re avenue southwest. The team was taken from in front of 1113 9th street, and the police are now looking for the alicged thief. ————e Sentenced for Larceny. Pleasant White, one of the three men who was convicted cf robbing Mr. Emmert on the highway several years ago, and sentenced to the penitentiary for five years, but who was pardoned before being sent to state prison, was before Judge Mills today, charged with the larceny of two hounds belonging to a son of Mr. August Douath, The dogs were left in a collar night before last and yesterday morning they had disappeared. It was evident that some one bad opencd the door leading to the cel ar and assisted the dogs out of their place of safekeeping. Pleasant White had been secn with the dogs, and when the theft was reported to the police he was arrested. He claimed that the dogs followed him home. Odicers Heide and Dean told of the _ prisoner's revious penitentiary sentence, but the jatter said he had never been in state's prison. Lawyer Moss, who defended him at that time, told the court about the con- viction and pardon and Lawyer Peyton, who de- fended White today. said he had known his client ever since he was “knes hight to a duck,” aud then said what he could ir his behalf. Judge Mills lectured White for trying to de- ceive the court concerning his former arrest and fined him €50 or 90 days, Why the Charge Was Ignored. As stated in Tux Sram yesterday, tho grand jury ignored the charge against Thomas H. Shayne, who had been arrested on complaint of Mr. J. P. Lewis on a charge of obtaining money on false protenses. It was alleged that Shayne had obtained goods from Mr. Lewis ona draft, which was returned “no good.” Investi- gation showed that there was no intent to de- fraud, a mistake having been mude conecrning the draft, and the charge was ignored on a statement of the circumstances made to the jury by Mr. Lewia —-—_-- A Steady Man With Unsteady Nerves. John Steady's nerves were not very steady when he appeared before Judge Mills this morning. He was drunk yesterday and he im- agined that a man was going to drive over him on the sidewalk. For that reason he ran out into the street and grabbed the bridle and cre- ated a disturbance thereby. He was fined $5. ———— Five Dollars for Being Disorderly. When the name Jerry Sullivan was called in the Police Court todey a middle-aged man re- sponded. He was bareheaded and his shirt sleeves were rolied up in such a manner as td give him the appearance of a man looking for @ fight. Disorderly conduct on H street was the charge against him and he pleaded drank- epness as an excuse. Policomau Loughran told of the loud noises made by Jerry and the Judge asked the latter what he had to say, “I don't know nothing,” he responded. “Mr. Mills, you know me, I’m a huckster on H street.” “And you can pay: Sno of $5," said the court. iJ t Atlantic Park iih 25, 50, 75c. aud él ® Humane Association Convention.
