The opening games in the all-comers’ tennis tournament yesterday fully realized the expec- tation that this event would afford an oppor- tunity to witness a fine display of skill. The uncertain weather prevented a large attendance and the players did not have the stimulus which a crowd affords, Still the preliminary games were played with great spirit and there were several which which were closely con- | tested. The players from this city were in | good form and although they crossed racquets with some of the best players from the north they made a good showing. Mr. V. G. Hall unfortunately found it impossible to take part in the tournament, and his games were defaulted. Mr. Billings of New York. Mr. Wright of New York and Mr. Beach of New Haven are well known names among those who are playing in the tourna- ment. Considerable progress was made in playing off the games in the singles. The preliminary round and a number of games in the first round were played off, and it is noted that the District players survived in good shaj the opening contests, and that of those who have dropped by the wayside may be found players from the north as well as the local players, There are several games which deserve more than a passing notice. Mr. T. F. Chambers of this city played a beautiful game with Mr. Bil. lings of New York, who is one of the leading Pn among those who have come from a istance. The feature of Mr. Billing’s game his skillful playing, which keeps bis opponent dancing from one side of the court to the other. The games stood all one, and the final game was won by Mr. Billings, who found in Mr. Chambers a player who demanded his best effort. In the next round Mr, Billings met Mr. Charl MoCawley and both won a set and the last set stood three all, when darkness puta stop to the game. A very pretty game was played by Mr. Clarence Byrnes of this city and Mr. Beach. The latte: is well known here, as he has taken part in Previous tournaments. Mr. Byrnes’ hard play soon put Mr. Beach on his mettle, but it was necessary to play # third game before he could be declared the winner. Both Mr. Parks and Mr. Metcalf played in excellent form and the result was that they both reached the second round. Mr. B. K. Kennon also appears in the third round, while his brother, who was not so fortunate, was defeated in the preliminary round by Mr. Walker of New York. The latter then fell a prey to the skill of Mr. Parks, Mr. Lyon, Mr. Borden, Mr. Wooten and Mr. Byrnes made baa draws in the preliminary round and they have the cansolation prize to look forward to im compensation for their hard luck. Davidson and Woodward came together in the first round and gave a very interesting exhibition of tennis, the latter winning. It is predicted that the results of toda: playing will show that the District players have &@ good prospect for being in the finals, It has been thought that the District men were not “in it” for the prizes in the singles. This opin- ion has been considerably modified. The scor of the games played yesterday are as follows Preliminary round—E. L. Hail vs. B, 8, Gar- mendia, both New York, both defaulted; W. G. | Peter beat Perkins by default; Charles McCaw- -y beat H. C. Painter, 6-1, 6-3; H. M. Billings, ew York, beat T. F. Chambers, 7-5, 5-7, 6-0; Farwell beat V. G. Hall of New York by default; E. A. Thompson, New York, beat T. P. Oscar Woodward beat A. W. beat Grant of New York by default; A. E. | Wright, New York, beat J. P. Wooten, 6-4, 6-4; Beach, New Haven, beat Clarence Byrnes, 4-6, ——— | 7-5, 68; 8. G. Walker, Virginia, beat BK. Peter, 6-3, 6-4; F. R. Parks beat F. A. Kellogg, New Yor by default; W. P. Metcalf beat G. A. Lyon, , 6-1, First Round—Brickenstein bent M. F. Pros- ser of New Jersey, by default; Thompson, New York, beat Farwell by default; F. R. Parks beat 8. G. Walker, 6-3, 6-4; Metcalf beat Nicoll by default; Woodward ‘beat Davidson, 6-4, 8-6. Second Round—W. G. Peter beat Brickenstein, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. ——-_-_—_ TWO OLD SOLDIERS, They Were Drunk, but Were Allowed Time to Leave the City. “’m an old soldier and if your honor will let me go this time I'll return to Hampton at once.” That was what Laurence Connolly said to Judge Mills this morning when arraigned on a charge of drunk and disorderly. ‘What brought you here?" inquired the Weex | court “Ieame to get examined,” he responded, “and here are my papers. I also have my re- turn ticket.” Judge Mills looked st his papers and re- marked, “This 1s a good time to get examined for nervousness,” Connolly had been drunk. “Tl suspend sentence this time so you can return to Hampton,” said the judge, “and the ofticers will reiease you in time for you to reach the boat.” “I want to get on the boat at 1 o'clock,” said the soldier. “But the boat doesn’t start until 5 o'clock,” said the judge, “and you will be released two hours before that time. Thos. Marlow, an old man wearing a blue uniform, was next called on a similar charge. He also came from Hampton and like his brother soldier, Connolly, he got drunk yester- day. He told Judge Mille that he bad not drank anything for « long time until yesterday, when he met some friends aud got drunk. “It arg honor will discharge me this time,” he said,““I will not remain in the city a minute, I will go to Philadelphia on the first train.” Judge Mille said these old soldiers had be- come a source of much annoyance to the court and they must stop this business. They do not harm any one, however, and some leniency should be shown them. Marlow was releasod upon his promise to k the city. ——— An Ofd “Vag” Sent Down Again. Mike Lanhady, an old rounder, who cannot keep out of the hands of the law many days at @ time, was the first prisoner called befora Judge Mills today. The judge recognized the prisoner as an old offender, although his face was covered with beard that was almost white. Judge Mills said that Mike had been appearing before the court ever since its organization twenty years ago. Mike was charged with being « “vag,” and when he saw that the judge recognized him he said “guilty.” He was given two months on the farm, ——_—__— Laborers Coming Over the Border. A few days ago the department was informed that the Canadian Pacific railroad had imported @ number of laborers into this country from Canada to repair its roadbed, which for a dis- tance of six miles runa through the state of Vermont, entering at Richfield and then return- ing to Canada again. Before the Treasury De- partment could act the laborers, who are em- ployed by the year by the Canadian Pacific railroad, had completed their work and re- turned to Canada. A similar case along the line of the same railroad arose asbort time since, when a valuable man employed by the road and who lived in the United States died. His place was filied by a Canadian, an old rail- roader, familiar with the duties of the position. In this instance, however, the c! was made that he cume into this country under contract and the Canadian Pacific railroad management filled his place with an American, as his duties required him to reside in the United States, In the matter of the laborers the Treasury De- ment did not prosecute, thinking it would straining the law in a technical sense to do sa, Postrtvety only one more (performance of “The Destruction of Pompeii,” and that ie to- night. T. P. Gill, the First of the Irish Leaders to Arrive Here, Describes the Conflict. From the New York Tribune. Without any previous warning and without any Irishman inthe city knowing anything about it, Thomas P. Gill set foot yesterday in New York, having come from Ireland on the Alaska, Mr. Gill is an Irish member of parlia- ment, # follower of Mr, Parnell and a repre- sentative of South Louth. He drove from the pier yesterday to the Fifth Avenue Hotel, where he is staying, and no sooner had his arrival become known than several prominent Irishmen called to pay their respects, among the first being Gen. James R. O'Beirne, assistant superintendent of immigra- tion. Mr. Gill greeted a reporter of the Zvi- bune who called upon him cordially and ex- pressed his surprise and delight at the great Progress made by New York, both as to size and population, since his last visit. “J am,” said he modestly and with a smile, “what may be called the first installment of the delegation of Irish parliamentarians who are coming to the United States to represent the Irish cause. Our intention, in the firet ise, Was to come in a body and we had ar- ‘anged to sailon the Teutonic on October 1, but the arrest of John Dillon and Wm, O’Brien obliged us to change our plans,” “Are Messrs. Dillon and O’Brien now on their way here?” asked the reporter. “They are,” replied Mr. Gili, triumphantly, “notwithstanding all Balfour's elaborate efforts to prevent them. “How did they manage to slip away so suc- cessfully?” ‘One of our fellow-members of lg William Murphy, owns a yacht, and it is very probable that they left on that craft, and I hope they reached Havre in time tocatch the French boat, for it is not likely that they could have safely embarked at an English port.” “How does Mr. Parnell regard the step?” “Mr. Parnell.” Mr, Gill replied emphatically, “4s the inspiration of the whole affair, and fe called aconvention in Dublin which decided upon this plan, Every step in the whole transaction was resolved upon only after con- sultation with Mr. Parneil, for, you must re- member,” continued Mr. Gill, enthusiastically, “that he is the guiding spirit of all our actions, and outside of the parliamentary party and among the masses of the people his popu- larity has never been greater than at this mo- ment.” “Are you coming to raise money for the threatened famine?" “Twant it distinctly understood, id Mr. Gill, emphatically, “that we come to state the case of Ireland to the American people, and not to*appeal for charity, We want to tell the American people of the tremendous struggle that Ireland is carrying on at present. There is an immense conspiracy on foot to destroy the national party in Ireland in the interest of the English tory government and the iandlords. Within four years 5,000 persons have been im- prisoned for alleged political offenses, and I may say one-third of the Irish parliamentary party have been put in jail from time to time; and the persecution 18 still going on.” Will you explain why the fight of Dillon and O’Brien was resolved upon?” “Indeed I will, my friend,” replied the member tor Louth, gleefully. “Their arrest came so euddenly that we expected the trial would not last a week. The purpose was to appeal from the decision of the magistrates it 1t should have proved unfavorable, not in the hope of gaining better terms, but in the hope of gaining time, which would enable them during the pendency of the appeal to vinit America, Aweek ago last Friday we learned that Bal- four's tactica wore to delay the trial as long as possible, while O'Brien and Dillon's counsel pleaded for a speedy trial. No less than 200 summonses were issued, It was further learned that they were to be sentenced under an old act of Edward IIT, which preciuded an appeal. In this way Balfour could hold them in juil for an indefinite period.” “Will there be any feeling among the Irish people that this was cowardice or that it was running away?” “That is bosh,” replied Mr, Gill, sternly. “Of course there will be no such feeling, Why should there be? Why, my good friend, does hot everybody know perfectly well, and do not Mr. Dillon and Mr. O'Brien ’ themselves know, too. that the very moment they stand upon English soil again, let it be a week from now or a year from now, they will be arrested? The trick has stopped for the time Balfour's shameless attempt at the persecution as well as the prosecution of these men, and it will, Jam confident, result in great benefit to the Irish cause.” PEACEFUL WAYS FAVORED. The Socialist Congress Disapproves of Using Violent Methods. At yesterday's session of the socialist congress in Halle Herr Singer made a speech in which he condemned the attitude -of three members of the party who sought to gain their ends outside the regular channels of par- liamentary agitation. A number of other speakers supported the position of Herr Singer, and the congress finally adopted a resolution declaring that the socialists should seek to obtain their objects only through the enactments of law by parliament, It is prob- able that Herr Werner, who has been accused of being disloyal to the party, will be excluded from the sessions of the congress. ‘The congress agreed to appoint a committee to inquire into the disputes between the so- cialist parliamentary en and the Berlin opposition, excluding from the committee any member of the reichstag representing Berlin or any delegate deputed by the Beriln socialists, | ‘The congress unanimously approved the ac- tion of the socialist members of the reichstag in discountenancing a general cessation of work on last May day, and also their policy ro- garding the second ballots following the last ge! lection for members of the reichstag. —_ A BID FOR MORE TRADE. Meaning of the ‘Removal of Export Duty From Canadian Logs.” The Empire of Toronto, the govern- ment organ, commenting on the removal of the export duty on Cadadian logs, saya: “The action of the Dominion government in remoy- ing these export duties will doubtless be tuken as an earnest of their desire for an enlarged freedom of trade in lum- ber between Canada and the United States and while Cougress has, as we think, rather un- aciously excluded spruce fumber from the fewer rate of duty prompt action of the federal authorities may yet prove effectual in induc- ing the United States to deal more liberally with grades of lumber upon which they have or maintained higher duties.” —_——_+oo__—— A Conspiracy Alleged.
