ON ANALOSTAN ISLAND, How People Will Get Across the River Saturday. REGULATIONS FOR GOVERNING THE ATTENDANCE AT THE GAMES—A BIG BARGE TO BE USED ASA FERRY BOAT—A GAME OF LA CROSSE—JEWETT CANNOT COME, Arrangements for the reception of the visit- ing athletes and the annua! meet of the A.A.U., to be held on Analostan Island next Saturday, are about completed as far as the Columbia Club goes. Analostan Isiand has been given anew appearance by the erection of the grand stands and the other structures that have been re- cently let into the landscape on that side of the river, and now work is being done to strengthen the landings on ench side of the stream. Everything will be done to make tho trip from Georgetown to the island perfectly safe, and timid people need have no fear of sinking floats or breaking wharfs or capsizing steamers, for each of these calamities has been averted beforehand by the most effective means, ‘THE FERRY. For instance, there{will be, besides two of the small upper river steamers, a huge flat boat, such as is ordinarily used for the transporta- tion of stone and similar freight, propelled by a tug firmly lashed to the side, on which will be a railing and benches. Folks to the number of fully 300 can walk directly on this without any danger of being crowded off into the river, and at the other side the craft can be emptied antiy. The landing will be mado head on, so that considerable time will be saved by avoiding the usually necessary turning. At the city side the float has been reanchored so that it will be quite impossible to sink it, and provision has been made for loading both the scow and a steamer at once by means of a new bridge that will connect the boat-house float with that in front of Cumberland’s house, THROUGH THE BOAT HOUSE. The two center sectious of the boat house will becleared of obstructions, the boats and other articles now in the way removed or hoisted to the roof, and entrance will be nad through the large double doors in front. There will be a ticket office built just outside, and two men will be stationed at the doors to examine the tickets, which are to be in the shape of disks of cardboard to be tied to the button hole, after the fashion of tickets at a horse race. ‘Ihe purchaser will retain posses- sion of this ticket throughout the day, so that he can go and come at pleasure. Every one on the island will be required to have this badge, including officials, contestants, re- porters, spectators and laborers, and the police, of whom there will be a squad presentto pre- serve order, will be instructed to remove any person not so provided. Any one has the right to admission to the island, the only condition to the purchase of a ticket being the payment ofadollar. Half a doilar apiece extra will be charged for seats in the covered stands, the uncovered ones being free. A GAME OF LA CRoBSE. ‘The games on the island are to be preceded at 10 o'clock inthe morning at Capitol Park by a | game of lacrosse between the teams of the Staten Island and Schuylkill clubs for the champion- ship of the Union, the victory to earn points | for the winner inthe race for the general championship. It is not true, as has been pub- licly stated, that there will be a game of base ball at the same hour on Analostou Island be- tween the Columbix and Manhattan teams. Arrangements have been made for a match #0 far asto insure a game Friday afternoon in case the Manhattans can play then, but not otherwise. JEWETT NOT COMING. President Eddy of the Detroit Club, who will be referee on Saturday, has informed Treas- urer Perry that Jewett, the crack sprinter of the Detroit Club, is sick of typhoid fever, and will not be able to come to Washington. The entries for the games are being re- ceived in very large numbers by both ‘Treas- urer Perry and Secretary Sullivan, the latter being in New York, and will be announced Weduesday morning. All yesterday afternoon and on until late in the evening the Schuetzen Park was crowded with Germans, although there was a noticcable sprinkling of other nationalities as well. It was the celebration of the two hundred and seventh anniversary of the founding of the Germantown colony in Pennsylvania. It was a German celebration, but it was an American annivegsary, and very important one in the history of the country. German day, as it is called, passed off delightfully, and it has now asecure place in the German calendar. Yes- terday when it rained so hard it was thought that it would be necessary to postpone the ex- ercises until some clear day, but when early in the afternoon the clouds cleared away and the eun came out it was decided to go on with tho festivities und to celebrate German day on tho appointed day if possible. ‘The exercises at the park began soon after 4 o'clock, and from then until midnight the whole scene was a most animated one. As it grew dark the colored lights all through the great enclosure were lighted and at intervals fireworks were sct off, | making the sky a blaze of light. Merrily cracked the rifles, down went the tenpins, the merry-go-rounds were there in force as were | allgorts of booths where articles more or less | useful were sold or rafled off. There was life | and motion everywhere, and if a person did | not wantto do one thing there were always | plenty of others to do. MUSIC AND ATHLETICS, Asannounced in Tue Sran yesterday after- noon a number of the uniformed German so- cieties of the city went out to the grounds ina body and their sashes and swords and feathers | were quite a feature of the scene. A little after | 4a large band in one of the open music stands | struck up ‘Resch’s Celebration March” and | continued oa through a program that involved a little of everything from extracts from “Ermine” to “Das Wacht am Rhein.” After- ward came the reception of socisti-s, followed Ona of | the prettiest features of the day wae a gym- nastic exhibition given by the members and the pupils of the Columbia Turn Verein. ‘This large band of young men, uniformed in white | shirts and blue trowsers, went through a aortes of protty and gracefu! evolutions, as well as a number of others that required great skill a4 practice, THE EXERCISES, At 7 o'clock the exercises in the hall began with the overture ‘‘America” by Prof. Donch and a large orchestra, Mr. Paul Schulze, the president of the permanent organization tor the celebration of German day, then mounted the platform and delivered the opening address in German, By the time he began his address the large hall was well filed, althongh a large part of the crowd within the park seemed to prefer to stay outside and enjoy the attractiona presented by the open-air concert, the booths, the targets’ and the dancing pavilion. In closing his speech Mr. Schulze introduced Mr. L. W. Habercom, fifth auditor of the Treasury, who made a stirring address in German that was interrupted again and again by shouts of ap- plause. Mr. Habercom spoke at some length of the history of the country and the important part the Gerinan element had taken init. Ofall races he thought that the Germans amalga- mated with this people the most easily and look with disfavor upon some of the manners aud customs of Germans he was willing to trust to the general characteristi: good sense of the American people for a just verdict. At the conclusion of his address the combined Swnger- bund and Mennerchor sang Abt’s chorus, Das Deutsche Lied, under the leadership of Prot. Waldecker, OTHER SPEECHES, Ex-Commissioner L. G. Hine made a brief but pleasant address in Englisa that waa re- ceived with much interest. Then the Sacnger- bund sang ‘Hei lust’ger Ritt,” Mr. Anton Eb- erly made a speech in the mother tongue and the Mennerchor, under the leadership of Prof. E. Mori, sang **Vereins-Gruss.” Commissioner Doug!a #, who was present as one of the guests | of the evening, made a short speech. ‘Then the band. which bad been giving an open-air con- cert, was called in and played the accompani- ment while the whole audience sang tho “Star Spangled Banner” as enthusiastically as they could done the “Watch on the Khine” and in a manuer that left no doubt as to their loyalty to the flag of their adoption, This ciosed the formal exercises of the even- ing, but it by no means put a stop to the gayety for many simply adjourned to the open dane. ing pavilion’ and joined in with the younge contingent who had been making that their headquarters all the evening. German day was a success, The only thing that marred the | pleasure of the day was the moisture of the | earth, but that was not enough of a drawback | to amonnt to much, and do what she could nature could not keep that crowd from enjoy- ing the day. ———— IN EAST WASHINGTON, Citizens Ask to Have the Cable Line Extended to the Avenue Bridge. The East Washington Citizens’ Association metat 326 Pennsylvania avenue southeast last night. President Dawson called attention to a pamphlet which he said would soon be ready for distribution containing the admirable news- paper accounts of the celebration of the new bridge. The special committees appointed in connection with the bridge celebration were discharged from further service with a vote of thanks. Mr, Weller, from the cxecutive committee, said that the auditing cominittee would find no | } deficiency im the bridge but rather a comfort- able surplus, As tothe committee on hall be said no suitable hall could be found, but he un- derstood a large hall would be provided in the new bank building. THE CABLE LINE. Mr. Weller spoke of the decision of the stock- hoiders of the Washington and Georgetown railroad adopting a cable line for the avenue and Lith street lines, and said in this connec- tion that he was of the opinion that the associ- ation should ask Mr. Hurt to continue the line to the new bridge. Mr. Hurt, he said, had in- timated three years ago that he had no objec- tion to this extension, aud as it was surely easier, speaking from his experience, to run & cable roud in a direct line than around a curve he thought the company would agree to this atonce. There might be urged against this that Congress would have to annul the charter of the company, but with public sentiment be- hind it this was easily accomplished. Mr. Weller having embodicd his sentiments in a resolution, which was adopted, the secretary was notified to coramunicate with Mr. Hurt assuring him of the association's earnest sup- port. In thia connection Mr. Hubbell suggested that the company be requested to locate their power house near the new bridge, but there was objection to this, and Messra. Sperry. Guy and Weller spoke against it. Mr. Hubbell was firm, however, and submitted a resolution in support of what he had said, but when it was put toa vote it was lost, THE STREET SCHEDULE. The street committee reported through Mr. M. I. Weller that it had visited Capt, Rossell before the schedule of streets had been submitted. While the association's schedule had not been adopted in full, Capt. Rossell aeserved the praise of the association for the excellent judg- ment he had displayed regarding the streets of that section. Mr. A. F. Sperry referred to the inactivity of the historical committee appointed three years ago to collect historical data of the association, and moved chat the committee be discharged. ‘This was done, and J. W. Babson, A. F. Spercy and M. I, Weller were appointed to succeed the old committee—Dr. W. Lee White, M.I. Weller and A. F, Sperry.
