This is a guarantee to adver- tisers that is given by few papers in the world, THE GREED OF A RAILROAD. How It Gobbled Up Not Only Long Bridge, but the City Streets. To the Editor of Tax Evzmrwe Stam: “A correspondent of a morning contemporary undertakes to controvert my statements con- cerning Long bridge and the manner in which it was acquired by the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Company. Though the writer of the communication in question does not describe Long bridge with any detail it was, in his view, & comparatively worthless structure, Yet worthless as it was the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Compauy wanted it and took the means I have described to get possession of it. Publi spirited and seif sacrificing, this corpor- ation went to great expense in putting the bridge in order, and, altogether, it proved a From top to bottom the house is best cleaned that is cleaned with Pearline. This statement no truthful person familiar with the bridge will challenge. ‘The truss spans crossing the Vir; ra nel were repaired and. to « consi tent, rebuilt by tn road company, but the ns themselves rest upon the original stone oe built by the government. It is true that the bridge—both the trusses and causeway—needed repair at the time of ite surrender, it is also true that the gov- ernment was at the expense of its main- teuance and of operating the draw. This stu- pendous burden upon the Treasury, amount- therefore far more economical, less than ons cont & cup. he ing. probably, to leas than 25,000 annually, the Lo ee rtp ooeaedl timore and Potomac Railroad Company generously assumed, But that this company kuew it was getting a prodigious, unheard-of = and that it knew that the interests of pod gape were being bartered away and sacri- is amply demonstrated by tbe burr: —— wih which Se a was railrosded throug! ‘ongress without debate, without ‘considera- Mi URNING REVERIE. tion, Thut corporation and its ee and lobbyists, which wero then, as now. too care that the bill should become 4 law be: fore the public knew of its existence. The correspondent referred to a touching ac- count of the little boy who barely escaped deatn on the bridge iram a\drove of cattie stampeded by a locomotive. That incident is just as likely to be repeated today in passing over the present structure, the bridge, the truss spans and the causeway being no wider than by was at the time the lucky youth es- cay Row there was a bridge—a railroad elo <2 built during the war across the Poto: bis bridge was about fifty yards distant from Long bridge. It had a draw gnd no difficulties oc curred from the existence of these two draws, which were side by side—were in alignment with each other and were simultaneously opened. It is the flimsiest pretense to claim that the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Com- was solicitous about not interrupting the Ravigation of the river. That corporation wanted Long bridge because it saw it could be had for comparatively nothing and it got it by the legislative methods detailed. But the citi- zens of Washington are, it appears, deeply in- debted to the Baltimore and Fotomuc Railroad Company. I suggest that its railroad from Baitimore to Washington was built for the profit—present and prospective—there was in It to the railroad company. As a well-managed highway it hes been a distinct and scknow!- edged benefit to the me of Washington. On the other hand the people of Washington have handsomely reciprocated all of its corporate favors by the volume of traffic and travel they have sent over the road. There is no balance to the company’s credit on that account. Further, since I am led to » of this cor- poration ‘and its methods. it was originally rauted a right of way through the ity of jashington. Now, liberally uck a grant, it might mean the tto lays double track and a track h the aac 1 for invalids as well as peresus ia heath. After emerging from the tunnel south of the Capitol there ure three tracks. These epeedily expand into ten tracks, occupying a width of 180 feet, nearly the entire width of an nue, and crossing a reservation. These ten tracks are maintained for nearly one-third of a mile, when they Daeg oe into six tracks, which, — occasiouaily five trucks, continue to Loug bridge.
