There were fireworks at Manhattan Beach as early as 2 o'clock a.m. yesterday. Vera Cruz was burned up in earn A ter- rific noise that resembled a prolonged crash of thunder broke the stillness of the night. It wes followed by a second and a third peal that made the ground tremble. Many im- agined that an earthquake was about to engulf them. There were strange meteors in the sky, and they were brighter than any of the stars ‘They were skyrockets from Vera Cruz. ‘Through the air they whizzed in all directions and of all colors, shedding clusters of beauti- ful lights #3 they burst. The sceuery of Vera Cruz caught fire and great streaks of red flames shot up, with clouds of black smoke. Two minutes after the first report this series of ex- plosions came to an end. During the explosion a gained belief in Sheepshe: y that the Oriental was on fire, ‘The result was that scores of people hurried across to Munhattan to render what xssistance they could. After he bad been making the cards for some months com- plaints were made to the government that the paper was not up to the quality required, and the government started au investigation. As a result a number of million of cards were condemned and Mr. Daggett received no pay for them.
