THE EVENING STAR Cirevlation of any Newspaper in the World, Advertising Medium is worth Every American city rises up against the eensus of 1899 because American pride and public spirit are at least equal to American Progtess. The enumerator bas not apparently im Washington, St. Louis, Philadelphia and some other cities reached the high-water mark of expectation; and perhaps in some instances bas fallen below the demands of attainable justice, Making all necessary deductions, the census as a whole is probably as accurate as any has been or could be made except by the expenditure of much more money than it is deemed prudent to expend But there is no doubt that sharp criticism in certain quarters | has caused a more careful revision to be made than wonld have been made without it. Enough is not yet known to mark accurately the comparative increase and present rank of the large eities of the republic. but the table taken from the New York Times and printed | elsewhere sufficiently, for present purposes, indicates the approximate result, The study of the result as far as the leading cities are concerned shows, first, that the United States have as many cities containing a million popu- lation and above as all Europe. Otherwise this study is too complex to be presented bere in full. The American cities having more than # million population are New York, Chicago and Philadelphia. Chicago. which was fifth im 1870 and fourth in 1580, is second in 1890. Philadelphia sinks from second in the two previous decades to third by the Present census, Brooklyn, which was third during the past twenty years, is now fourth, and Baltimore, which was sixth in 1870 and seveuth in 1880. rises to fifth in 1890, which is | extremely creditable to the city “by blue Patapsco,” our vext-door neighbor. Of the other cities Boston loses two points, Cincin- nati stands as No. 8, where she has stood for three censuses; San Francisco is ninth, as in 1880; Pittsburg goes from twelfth to tenth Place, Buffalo from thirteenth to eleventh; Cleveland loses one place in the procession, and New Orleans three. The cities making the most astonishing progress are Milwaukee, from No, 19 im 1880 to No. 14 in 1390; Minne- apolis, from No. 38 in 1880 to No. 17 in'90, and St. Paul, from No. 45 to No. 20 in 189. The rivals of the upper Mississippi are fighting like Turks, and filling the air with charges of fraud. Washington has done pretty well and would have done better with a fair, that is a patient count, We come down one step. which we may easily regain and believe we shall. Wash- ingtou’s increase is evidence of the substantial progress of the capital city. We had here in 1880, exeluding suburbs, 147,293 souls; in 1890 about 230,000, suburban residents included. At this rate alone, giving free scope, without Jealousy, to our western contemporaries, the capital will be in course of « few years a great as it is a prosperous city, and this without its having the usual stimuli-—large manufactures or great commercial activity. It is destined to be the finest capital on the planet and the most desirable residence city that ever grew up to delight the denizen or stranger. a Unquestionably it is important that the Washington Monument shall not be defaced with unsuitable inscriptions whether on bronze tablets, memorial stones, or on the shaft If, But opposition to the use of the Monument So- city’s plaque, based upon the alleged unsuita- bility of the inscription, comes very late, indeed. ‘The preparation of the plaque was decided upon aud announced years ago, and the character of the memorial und its inseription were warm!y discussed ia the society's meetings, reports of which were published in the newspapers. Con- gressional intervention for the protection of the monument against this plaque ought to have occurred long ago. if it was to occur at all, in time to prevent the expense of making the memorial. To permit up to this point the ques- tron of what is to go in the monument to be de- cided outside of Congress, to sit quietly by with fuli notice of the proposed memorial and ailow the society to work at it for years, and now to pounce upon the unhappy plaque when it is finished and ready to be put in pla: seems tobe hardly fair. It will be necessary to show some very serious objection to the pro- posed tablet or its inscription in order to justify this course. + Astone battle betweon the north and the south is threatened. The Commercial Gaztte of Cincinnati on federal elections says: “Turt having fuiied to have effect. we will see what efticaey there is in stones;" to which the ( ier-Journal responds: ~-Our esteemed contemporary is fixing to get somebody hurt. Stones are effective enough as missiles When thrown by only oue side. Lut what about the return tire — + = Beriberi has arrived for the first “time and everybody will wish it hadu’t arrived at all, be- cause beriberi ix a sleeping sickness from In- dia, Africa and Australia, and ought to have found victims enough there to satisty it. Score auother point against unrestricted immigra- hon, — - Towa w very hot about something just at present. Dispatches from Burlington show the thermometer registered 116 degrees to 120 de- grees yesterday with slightty lower records at other points. —————— —___ What is the matter this year? The republi- cans are at outs on silver coinage and do not agree on tariff bills and here is the Philadelphia Yess, the leading Peunsylvania republican paper, ssying that the reference in the Pean- sylvania republican platform to the comments in the British house of commous ou the McKin- ey bill is “simply silly.” — + The prohibition state convention of Minne- sota meeting in St. Paul yesterday adopted a dry platform and nominated a full ticket, The Probibitionists are apparently carrying water eu beth shoulders. — > + There are so many abuses and alleged abuses of the poor old Congressional Record that it might be well to blot out and start afresh. Give us the record without imterpolation, omission or correction further than what is necessary to make it intelligible. ————$——— ‘The Germans of Germany are taking active steps aguinst the McKinley bill, but the Ger- mans of America are with McKinley as a rule, of at least with his party. — Seuator Mandervou Teports the Government Printing Office building to the congressional grand jury as an alarming nuisance. When will this grand jury find a true bill, in accord- suce with the facts and public opinion? And when will this matter of serious import to 2,000 workmen and their families and friends, as wel! as to the public at large of these United States be settled? No one of the public buildings is more disereditable to the goverument than aes ——— oo B Terrible mountain fires are devastating the forests of Colorado and the weather bureau will not turu the hose on. ——— — ‘The republican convention at "Harrisburg Yesterday was so nicely adjusted that it reached the desired gubernatorial result without the slightest effurt. Everything was ready and at given signal it did just what was expected of it, This shows what a skilled mechanic in machine politics can do and how artistically be can do it oe “Politics is = very poor fertilizer and the Maryland farmers are complaining of a short wheat yield. —_—— The national election discussion in the House started in yesterday with some indication that the shot-gun policy will have to be adopted to settic points uf difference between distinguished etutesmen. eo ee Fzeo silver some other week, BBB Py i?
