For some time bad feeling has existed be- tween the fishermen of Cristield, Md., and the Tangier Island people in Virginia, owing to the former's depredation of the latter's fishing grounds, Judge Gilbert of the Virginia county court was appealed to,and be decided that force might be used ‘to drive off the Mary- landers. Just now soft crabs abound im these waters, and the islanders find it their most profitable season. Several days ago, however, the Cris- field fishermen made their usual raid and cov- ered the waters with their smacks. The island- ers sounded the alarm agreed upon, and sullied out to fight the invaders, The latter were un- prepared for the onslaught, but nevertheless showed fight, After the battle had lasted about an hour the Crisfielders retired, the islanders pursuing them far across the Maryland line and firing as they sailed along. Suddenly the pursuers came toastop and one of their number im- cautiously shouted that they would have con- tinued the pursuit to the Crisfield portif the ammunition had not given out. Thereupon the Marylanders turned and chased the island- ers back to their hom Tuesday the fishermen, 100 strong, and armed to the tecth, again mvaded Tangier Island. The Virginians saw them coming and great was the excite . Boats were quickly manned and soon the Tangier fleet was ready to meet the enemy. The fight was a hot one from start to finish For three hours bullew fell in showers, yet, strange to relate, no one was hurt. The Virginians finally tired of this sort of fighting, so they closed in and succeeded im boarding a half dozen of the enemy's schooners. The prizes were brought into port together with the captured crews, and it was then that the Maryland fleet asked a truce. It was granted, and after a short conference the fixh- ermen agreed to withdraw from the Tangier waters, never to retarn,if the captured schoouers handsome young gentleman from the Hub, | were set free.
