CITY AND DISTRICT. @ Tae Evesrxo Sran’s subscription list, the books of the office, and ite press and ds- livery rooms are at all times open to the wel- come inspection of any person having a color- able interest in the correctness of its claims as to circulation. This is a guarantee to adver- tisers that is given by few papers in the world, and by none other in Washington! ANOTHER VICTORY. The Washingtons Win From the Wil- mingtons. The soil at Atlantic Park was too soft Satur- day afternoon for a game and so the contest scheduled for that day between the Senators and the tail enders had to be postponed. The two teams played at’ the Driving Park, near Alexandria, however, yesterday, Washington winning by the score of 12to 4. Anderson and Corcoran and Daniels and Nicholas were the batteries. Anderson was far from being the terror that reputation has painted him, being wild and easily hit. Every man on the home team hit safely at least once. The fielding was good considering the grounds, which have not been repaired yet. Bird playedsecond. Wash- ington made 12 hits and 4 errors and Wilming- ton 7 hits and 5 errors. OTHER GAMES. Barnie had a game yesterday near Baltimore without interference. The Jersey City team was defeated by the score of 10 to 2, Baker and ‘Tate and Fitzgerald and Murphy were the bat- teries. Baltimore made 8 hits and 4 errors, and Jersey City 7 hits and 7 errors. Newark demolished Hartford 11 to0. The points were occupied by Sullivan and Childs and Lyston, Stail and Moore. Newark made 18 hits and 1 error and Hartford 7 hits and 4 errors. Saturday's games.—Baltimore took first place by defeating Newark 4 to 2 Germann and Townsend and Miller, Duffy and Childs were the batteries. Baltimore made 10 hits and 4 errors and Newark 4 hits and 2 errors, ‘New Haven took away Worcester's lead and made the race all the closer by defeating the ex-champions, 10 to 5. Worcester made all 5 runs in the first inning, but New Haven got three singles, a double, a triple and a home run in the seventh and scored 6 runs. The batteries were Doran and Hofford and Stafford and Guinnasso. New Haven made 11 hits and 2 errors and Worcester 6 hits and # errors, Other games were: Saturday —Nationai League—At Cincinnati— Cincinnati, 4; Boston, 1. At Chicago—Chicago, 7; New York, 3. At Toledo—Toledo, 2; Louisville, 3. At Gouces- ter—Athletic, 8; Syracuse, 3. NOTES. There will be base ball all this week at At- lantic Park. ‘The Senators are having a hard pull to reach fourth place. Newark wins whenever they do. President Braden is thus quoted: “The pennant of the association, in my opin- ion, will go to Baltimore, Worcester or Newark. New Haven has a good team, but not as strong as many persons suj pose. When Newark’s pitchers get all right again some of the clubs which are leading now will fe to look out. The Washington team, with a few changes. will make a first-class or- ganization. Our own team (Jersey City) may also create some surprise later on, as we have had bad luck to contend with.” The Atlantic race now stands thus: Club. | Won) Lost.) Per. To the Editor of Tu Ev eNtno Star: On my return from Marshall Hall the other evening, with hundreds of others, we had the disagreeable pleasure of smelling a terrible stench which isa disgrace to the national capital. Irefer to the place below Giesboro’ Point where all dead animals are taken. There was more than the usual amount of rain in the Ohio, upper Mississippi and Missouri valleys, the belt of excessive rain- fall extending westward from Dakota to the Pa- cific. Excessive local rains also occurred in the south Atlantic and east gulf states and in the middie Atlantic states. The heaviest rains occurred in the central Ohio and upper Mississippi _valieys, where the precipitation exceeded two inches. The crop conditions generally throughout the northwest, southwest and the Ohio valley were improved by the favorable weather during the week, except im some localities in the upper Mississippi and central Ohio valleys, where heavy rains caused temporary damag The harvest of wheat is in progress in Kansas, southera Illinois and southern Indiana. In the former state the crop is reported as fair and of good quality. The condition of the corn cro} is much improved throughout the prinsipal corn states. Reports from Kentucky and Ten- nessee state that crops were somewhat injured by rain, but that the outlook is favorable; tobacco and corn are in good condition; cotton fine; wheat harvest in progress with prospect of half a crop; haying progressing, good yield; work well advanced. The weather was eapec- ially favorable for the cotton crop, which im- proved in all sections, except in limited loc Yies in the south Atlantic states, where local Fains caused some damage. The high temper- ature and slight rainfall generally throughout the guif states has caused rapid growth, and the general outlook is more favorable for this crop than at any previous report. Alabama re- ports the wheat crop a failure, oats light and clover good. Tobacco was improved in Vi ginia, and some replanting is in progress, A good growing week ix reported in New Eugland and the middle Atlantic states; haying is in Progress with prospect of a large yield; wheat Prospects continue good in Penmsylvania. ———— SISTERS OVERCOME A BURGLAR. They Attack Him in Their Room and Throw Him Out the Window. Lulla and Ella Lewis had an exciting experi- ence with a negro burglar at their home in Gallatin. Tenn., Saturday night. Miss Ella Lewis is the postmistress and it was known by the would-be burglar that she had considerable mouey, which ste had received in payment for her post office fixtures, which she bad sold. About 12 o'clock she was awakened by « man who was standing by her bedside with one hand on her throat and the other feeling under her pillow and around the head of the bed. She immediately called her sister, who had re- tired in the same room, and who ded tly to her calls for help. The burglar wa pistol from his pocket and cocked it, but before he could have possibly used it the young women seized him and gave him a thorough slugging, ail the time carrying him toward the window of the room. They finally reached the window with the midnight ma- rauder and by main strength they succeeded in Sse out, he falling to ground ten feet w on his head, After lying as if stanned by hie blows and his exit from the room above yuiled himself together and made his cxape. sli I DEInEIO OF cocea P other stimulating table beverages is fast increasing since Blooker’s Dutch Cocos, a really pure cocoa, has been introduced.—Advt, OUR MARYLAND NEIGHBORS. The Canal-Railroad Project Favored— Real Estate Sales—Summer Boarders. Correspondence of Tax Evenrno STAR. Rockviiix, June 22, 1890. Advices from that portion of the county ad- jacent to the line of the Chesapeake and Ohio canal represent that the people in that section are alive to the necessity of securing a railroad for the transportation of their crops and that the meeting to be held at this place July 2 will be largely attended by those interested. It isa question with the people along the line why, in view of the vast advantages to be derived by the business men of Georgetown and the Dis- trict generally, a meeting has not been called to give at least their popular support to the enterprise. It is represented here that the meet- ings for that purpose tobe held in the counties bordering on the upper Potomac will be well attended and that the people of western Mary- land are thoroughly in earnest in regard to th work that will in a short time develop the magnificent resources of western Maryland and pour into the lap of the capital city untold treasures of the Alleghanies. The great heat of the past two weeks has had somewhat a depressing effect on sales of real estate in this jocality, but nevertheless the business goes quietly on. Yesterday Cooke D. Luckett, real estate agent, sold the farm of John E. Knott, containing 148 acres with good improvements. about three miles from. this place in a southwest direction, to Amelia C. Allder of Loudoun county, Va., for $4,000 cash. Messrs. Austin Herr and Geo, W. Cissell of Georgetown, as trustees yesterday sold the Orndorff farm of 2615¢ acres to W. W. Burdette for 327 per acre. This farm is situated near Bell's Mill, eight miles from Georgetown, and is improved by a large brick dwelling house and good outbuildings. Rockville is now full of summer boarders and during the pleasant evenings the streets are crowded, Among the recent arrivals at the Montgomery House are Mrs. Abel G. Davis, Mrs. R. L. Dent and two children, Miss Hattie M. Robinson and Master Philander Robinson, all of Washington; Dr. Otis Linthicum, Balti- more, Md., and Samuel Eastburn, Green Spring, Md. At the Corcoran are Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Lambaugh and daughters, Mrs. E. F. Conway, F. A. Von Fagan, J. H. Fishback, W. W. Metcalf and Miss Hattie Harland, all of Washington. 3. A.M. ——_+___ ANACOSTIA, Warw Weatnen Denates.—The joint debate on protection vs. free trade by Major James K. Magie, ef Illinois, a temporary resident of Washington, and Mr. J. Harry Shannon of this village, whose brilliant career as an orator is well known, drew a good crowd to Gray's Hall Saturday night. The debate consisted of four thirty-minute speeches, two on a side, Mr. Shannon, who championed free trade, having the opening, and Mr. Magie, for protection, bring- ing up the rear. ‘The meeting was presided over by J. Adam Bede, and in spite of the heat the large audience, consisting partly of ladies, gave the closet attention during the two hours’ debate, being moved to frequent rounds of applause. Both speakers were loaded for bear and brought down a good deal of game. The debate would have done credit to the halls of Congress. Major Magic is one of the most logical campaigners in the republican party, and did yeoman service in New York in’88, but found in the youthful Anacostian a worthy foe. ‘Lhis is only the first of a series of free hot weather debates that will be held here. The next on the program is prohibition vs, license, which will be contested some night next week. Rex. Scott F. Hershey of the Sixth Presby- terian Chureh will espouse the prohibition cause and Major Magie will talk for high license. When it comes to heavy-weight enter- tainments Anacostia never gets left. Walson and Miss Lizzie Walson left this morning on a, week's overland trip through the Shenandoah valley. ——__ TO FIGHT TO THE DEATH. Two Former Friends to Meet on a Duelling Field. Social circles in Jeffersonville, Ind., were startled last week by the rumor of a proposed duel between two prominent and popular young men—Wilbur Ying and Charlie Benson. The stories of the quarrel which led up to the dueling point in some respects are widely dif- ferent. The name of a beautiful society leader was first used in connection with the affair. Now friends and acquaintances of both Ying and Benson indignantly deny this portion of the rumor. Wiser opinions trace the differ- ence between the young men to another source. Ying and Benson have been on bad terms for some time. Their businoss relations were strained and their intimates declare that a dis- pute about money, debts that mutually existed, really occasioned the quarrel. Benson met Ying near the post office Saturday morning and the encounter was punctuated by some ex- tremely bitter words. Benson is said to have precipitated matters by calling his former friend a liar, receiving an equally angry retort in turn. When the parties separated it was understood that a duel to the death should be fought that afternoon. The police have been notified, but no arrests have yet been made. * ce Sit MR. DEPEW DECLINED, He Will Not be President of the Chicago Fair Commission. It leaked out at world’s fair headquarters in Chicago Saturday that ancey M. Depew had positively declined to allow his name to go before the national commissioners as a candi- date for the presidency of that body. He gave asa reason that bis business interests would not allow him to serve in that capacity. He has written a letter indorsing D. Norton of New York for the position of seerctary. But politics has been instrumental in arrang- ing aslate which leaves Mr. Norton out. It was felt by those commissioners who have been consulted that the two chief offices should be filled by men of opposite political faith. As the republicans are in power the democrats conceded the presidency to them and ex-Sena- tor Thomas W. Palmer of Michigan has the best chance of being elected to that office. The democrats have selected the Hon. John T. Dickinson of Texas as their representative to be elected secretary of the national commis- sion. It is given out that E. T. Jeffery will probably be made director gencral. DROWNED AT CAPE MAY, Two Reading Young Men Go in Bathing and Only One Survives. Samuel Reber and Chas. Brehtel of Reading went to Cape May on a Sunday excursion yes- terday, and while bathing opposite the Windsor baths the undertow carried them out beyond their depth. They shouted for help, but too late for assistance. Brehtel succeeded in get- ting ashore, but Reber was drowned. His body was not recovered. Brehtel is at the United States and has Reber’s effects in his possession, Mrs, Patrick Stanton of Upper Prospect, Pa., was struck by lightning last night and instantly killed. Her husband and son were also shocked and fatally injured.
