Dyer, representing the Hazard and Dupont Powder Companies respectively, who called in answer toa letter from the Commissioners to appear before them to show cause why the powder magazines of the two companies should not be removed from their present location. The magazines are situated a short distance from the receiving reservoir and at present the two accommodate about 16,000 pounds, The Com- missioners recently received a petition from the residents in the locality that the location of the powder houses greatly depreciated the value of property in the vicinity and wasa menace to the security of the neighboring residents. My objection is not to free sugar, but the pro- says: posed method of making it free. If, in the pending tariff bill, sugar is placed upon the listwe give to certain countries a free market for $15,000.00 of their products, while they are not asked to open their markets to the free admission of a single dollar of American products. We ought to have in exchange for free sugar from certain countries a free market for breadstuffs and provisions, besides various fabrics from ali parts of our country. In short, we ought tu secure im return for free sugar a Market for $60.000,000 or #70,000,000 worth of our own products. It will not require reci- Procity treaties to secure this great boon. The tariff bill can contain all the necessary con- ditions. The legisiative power is able to secure the desired end. Within the last twenty years We have given the countries south of us free admission for nearly 260,000,000 worth of their products without receiving a penny'sadvantage Imexchange If sugar be now made uncon- ditionally free we shail have given tothe Latin- American countries free adwission for #150,- 000.000 of their products, It is time, I think, to look out for some reciprocal advantages, We area very rich nation, but not rich enough to trade on this unequal basis.” Relative Railroad Rates. The interstate umerce commission has announced its decision of the case of the Man- ufacturers and Jobbers’ Union of Mankato, Minn., against the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway Company and other railroad com- Punies in favor of the complainant. The opin- jon was written by Commissioner Schoon- maker. ‘The Mankato dealers complained that fates from Cifeago to Mankato should be Bo higher than to Waterville, Minneapolis and points to which hke rates were atlowed. It's a warm day when the ice gots left, | Chief of Bureau: “Is the man you want the place for a person of much weight in the com- munity?” Congressman: “Much wait? Well, I should say he was. He has been waiting ever since Mareh 4th, 1889,” . Red is a ‘*fast” color. Eight handred millers will hold a convention soon in Minneapolis and more floury speeches will be heard than ever before in that section. ‘The price of ice seems to have got stuck on the mercury in the therurometer. All the world’s @ stage yet, possibly, but it will be an electric car before many years. Customer: ‘What are you ice men piling the price on so for now? Don't you believe there is a hereafte: Ice Dealer—coolly: “Certainly I do, but there won't be any ice there. pln ssa lees THE ICE SITUATIO! Two Sides of the Question—An Expla- nation From an Ice Company. “It is all nonsense to say that the price of ice has doubled,” said a representative of the American Ice Company to a Stan reporter this morning. “Compare the prices of 1889 with those of the present date and see for your- self. Last year we sold seven pounds of ice for Scents. Now seven pounds cost the consumer Tcents, You could get 20 pounds for 15 cents a year ago. This day you pay 20 cents for the same quantity, Fifty cents a hundred was the ure last year. Now :t is 70 cents. Do you know what ice costs here? In Maine it is $6 a ton; freight is $1.50 and then you must add 25 cents a ton for handling from the vessel tu the ware house. ‘That brings up the cost to $7.75. Is that all? No! One-third of the cargo is waste by the time we get it into the wagons for delivery. Add $2.58; that brings us up to $10.33 per ton. We are selling it around to the houses at $14 4 ton. “Some people are talking about that slump in the price of ice that took place a few days ago. I want to explain that to you. in ordinary winters there is wn ice harvest on the Hudson river between Albany and New York of about 3,000,000 tons, Last winter they didn't get a pound. New York, Brook- lyn, Jersey City and a few of the surrounding settlements consume from 12.000 to 15,000 tons daily, That takes fifteen 1000- u vessels every day to supply the demand. Each vessel uses up about twenty days doing a round trip; that means from 200 vo 300. sailing vessels right out of the ice fleet that were not in that service last year because the ice harvested on the Hudsou was towed right Recently a good deat of ice has been shipped on to the New York market by parties not in the ice business. I presume the com- bination among the ice dealers took advantage of that fact, stood off and didn't buy the ice until they got it at their own prices. That accounts for the low figures quoted on ice in New York recently. Some of those non-pro- fessionals who shipped on the market didn’t realize enough to pay freigint. “It has been stated that there is a combina- tion here on the ice business. I want to sa most emphatically that the American Company is not in a combination, nor will it be. We stand alone.” AN ICE CONSUMER'S SAY, “What are we going to do about the extor- tionate rise in the price of ice?” said a well- known citizen toa Stan reporter this after- noon. “If there was any real reason why the price should go up no reasonable being would complain, but it seems to me somebody ought to kick at being practically compelled to add to the wealth of meu and corporations already over rich. The ice supply in Maine last winter was nearly 2,000,000 tons more than it was during the previous ice-cutting season, the = com- janies in the cutting and storing business Enew that but little ice was being made south of New York, so they kept on cutting until there was nothing more to cut. Never in all the history of Maine was there sucha supply, and yet the local company with which 1 have been dealing has notified me that the price has advanced very considerably. Now, [im ouly a poor man and a smali consumer, but I probably represent the views of the great majority of those who reside here when I say that when I have to pay 15 cents for the fifteen pounds of ice we use daily at my home powam ~ paying much more than I ought to. Of my own knowledge I know that the ice, with all its attendant expenses, can be laid down in the ware houses on our wharves for less than $10 a ton; this to more than cover all waste. I buy it at the rate of 22.40 a ton. and the kind of a ton I get never weighs more than the table of weights and measures says it should. This morning a man connected with the company Ihave been buying from called at my house and said, in effect, that I would be doing the company a favor if | would buy my ice from some one else; that his com- pany could do better by selling it in the warehouses in Maine. I men- tion this because early in the season this ne man and others connected with the same concern pestered me so that I agreed to deal with them instead of with one of the other companies from which I have been buying for some years past. Why don’t they cease doing business here and move right up to Maine? Why did they worry me for my trade if they don’t want it? ¥ eyes will be wide open next spring when the ice dealers are out canvassing.” THE EMERSON INSTITUTE, The Program of the Annual Commence- ment This Evening. ‘The thirty-eighth annual commencement of the Emerson Institute takes place this even- ing at the Universalist Church.
