Speeches and Reports at Today’s Ses- sion. A PROPOSED MODEL BREWERY AT THE WORLD'S FAIR—DISCUSSING QUESTIONS OF LEGISLATURE— | A SENTIMENT AGAINST THE ADULTERATION OF BEER. It is not often that a more substantial-look- ing lot of business men assemble in convention than are in this city now. They are members of the United States Brewers’ Association and they are delegates to their annual convention, held at Grand Army Hall. . : The regular business of the convention did not begin until this morning. Last night, bow- ever, the delegates assembled at G.A.R. Hall at 8:30 o'clock for a reception that had been tendered the delegates and their friends. Mr. Chris Heurich presided. Commissioner Doug- Jas mede an address of welcome and President Lefens of the Brewers’ Ascociation responded. TODAY'S SESSION. Teno'clock was the heur set for the session of the Brewers’ Association this morning and by that time Grand Army Hall was quite well filled with members of the association, but it was nearly an hour after the time set before they got fairly down to business. There was much preliminary work to be done in the way of paying annual dues, issuing badges and tickets for the banquet tomorrow evening, and enrolling the names of members present, and the secretary and treasurer had their hands full. i This is the thirtieth annual convention of the association. The last one was held in Ni- agara last June, but all the members seem de- lighted that this year the place selected was the national capital. : ; The association has a membership of 796 with members i almost every state in the Union, and in many of the states there are froma dozen to a hundred members, and in cities like Philadelphia, New York, Brooklyn, Chicago, Milwaukee and Cincinnati there are enough members to make a good sized society by themselves, Last year the receipts of the; association were $24,293.48 and the total assets amounted to the tidy sum of $31,476.89. The attendance of newspaper men at the ses- sions today was exceptionally large. A num- ber of representatives of out of town papers Were present, while all the trades journals were fully represented. PRESIDENT LEFFEN’S ANNUsL ADDRESS. At I1 o'clock President Leffen arose and called the meeting to order. He made his an- nual address and in the beginning said that the outlook of the brewers today is much more satisfactory than it was a year ago. He re- viewed the legislation of the past year as far as it affects prohibition or the liquor question and referred to the case of the state of Dakota which is trying the experiment of getting along with- ous stimulants, in a climate “such that during @ large part of the year even the temper- ature cannot be ascertained without the use of alcohol.” ‘This called forth loud applause. In referring to the proposed | exhibit at the coming world's fair when the as- | sociation intend to have a complete brewery | erected and in operation, showing the pro- cess of manufacturing the “national bev- erage,” President Letfen recommended that ‘s committee be appointed to take full charge of the matter, to procure the necessary ground and to erect the brewery. He then declared the thirtieth annual conven- tion of the association open for business and sailed upon the secretary. Mr. Katzenmayer, to read the report of the bourd of trustees, THE TRUSTEES’ REPORT. The report was long and touched upon many of the questions of importance to hop growers and Leer brewers. It treated at length of the bill for a congressional commission for the in- vestigation of the liquor traffic, the merease of port duties on rw material, the that define lager beer and adul- tion, prohibition and the fiscal pol- of the government, the interstate icy commerce law as it aifects the brewers, prohi- | bition measures, the recent Supreme Court @ecision in the case of Leisy & Co. of Peoria, TIL, who sent sealed kegs of beer to their agent in Keokuk, owa, and offered them tor sale in their original state, retail liquor dealers and their licenses, boycotts against breweries, size of brewers® casks and other similar matters, The report is strong in its antagonism to any adulteration im beer and announces that the association is heartily in sympathy with any logisiation that will put # stop to auy adulteration, although it insists that there is uo adulteration in Ameri- an beers The report is signed by the members of the board of trustees as follows: Thies J. Lefers, chairman, chicago; Henry Clausen, New York; | George Ebret, New York; Joseph Liebmann, Brooklyn; I. Danenberg, Newark; Henry H. Rueter, Boston; Gottheb F. rk- bardt, Boston; C€. W. Bergner, Phila- delphia; us Wainwright, St. | August Miblein, Milwaukee; Leo Ernst, Chi- | cago; Leo Ebert. Ironton, Ohio; Edward W. | Stiefel, Baltamore; James Liebmann and H. B. j Sharmann, vice presidents, and Richard Katzen- mayer, secretary. The report was unanimously adopted OTHER REPORTS. Mr. Taiman read the reporta of the publica- | tien and vigilance committees aud they re also adopted unanimously. Mr. Katzenmayer read the report of the financial committees, } which showed the association to be in a most rosperous condition The balance on hand | May 28, 1859, was $20,524.33; mitiation fees, @70; dues, $21,055.45; interest on deposit, 979. interest on bounds, $290; call | loan by Brewers’ Exchange £7,000, making a | total of $49,322.53. The expenditures during the year, including convention expenses and a subscription of €10.000 to the Johnstown | sufferers, amounted to $35,198.44, leaving the | assets Of the ussociation amounting to $14,- | 124.09 with liabilities in the shape of s call | loan of $5,000.
