JUDGE MILLER'S REMARK: The driver of the cart was taken to the Police Court this morning and tried for driv- ing on the wrong side of the street. The evi- dence showed beyond a doubt that the acci- dent was the result of the boy's own careless- ness, but that it would probably have been pre- vented had the driver been on the right side of the street. “The affair,” said Judge Miller in disposi of the case, “was clearly an accident. Wh are the drivers to do? Are they to stop their vehicles and wait for negligent parents to come out and take their children fr the street?” “I have seen such parents,” continued the judge, ‘sit on their front steps, cool and serene, and watch their infants toddling the streets, and at the same time they are re to shoot any driver who happens to ally run over the This defendant is fined for driving on the wrong side of the strect, the lowest fine or Hevricu’s “extra pale” Tue ARLixGrox Bortiixe Co., vith aud K sts. mw. Lusk Reports About the Condition of Rock Creek. Saturday, February 15, 1890, Taz Star printed An illustrated article relative to the condition of Rock creek and the sewers which emptied into it. Recently Mr. A. K. Parris called at- tention to the statements made in Tue Star in a letter to the Commissioners and asked that the thing be inquired into, The matter was referred to Capt. Lusk, who today in a report upon the subject to Col. Robert “The engineer department is fully aware of the fact that the sewage now reaching Rock creek must be intercepted as soon as practi- cable, and that intercepting sewers must be provided to keep the sewage of the suburban areas tributary to the Rock Creek valley from reaching the stream. i “The first link in the latter system is now under construction on the left bank of Rock creck, northwesterly from a point near the P-street bridge, The interception of the sew- age from near the P-street bridge to the mouth of Rock creek must be accomplished by a system of sewers located approximatels own on the accompanying map. The work ill be costly, and will form only a part of a complete system of sewage interception and disposal. An approximate estimate indicates that the cost of a tem of intercepting sewers for thi rt of Rock Creek valley will be about $230,000. Considering that the whole subject the sewerage of the District of Columbia is shortly to be reported upon by a board of sanitary engincers appoiuted by the President, it is thought that the construction of a work of the importance of that in question cannot with propriety be urged by the engineer department at the present time. a Not a Dancing School. In the Police Court today Eimer Dement was charged with giving an entertainment without a license at Washington Hall. A meeting of the ladies of the Mary Wash- ington Monument Association of Fredericks- burg, Va., and its advisory board held in the rooms of the Young Men's Christian Asso- ciation building last evening to consider the proposition made them by the National Mary Washington Monument Association, recently formed in Washington, of whic President Har- rison is president. The proposition was that if the association here would turn over all their rights and title to the property on which the unfinished monument stands and all prop- erty pertaining thereto, which the association owns they would build an imposing and appropriate monument. The letter also inti- mated thatif such request was not granted it was not likely a monument to her mem- ory would be built either in Washington or at Mount Vernon. After the proposition had been submitted to the meeting and fully discussed it was finally accepted, with the provision that the monu- ment should be erected at Fredericksburg: that the amount required for its erection should be in hand before a deed would be given; that Virginia and Fredericksburg especially should be fairly represented in the national associa~ tion, and that said monument should never be removed from over her remains. A few months ago an inventor of certain ap- paratus of a very simple character, which could have been readily duplicated in many different forms, was offered $6,000 for the right toa certam inland town, He wasa poor man and needed the money badly, The reader supposes, of course, thatthe inventor jumped at the chance and pocketed the money on the spot. Not he; he told the buyer that the patent was worth $100,- 60. and he was not going to sell one town in New York state for $6,000, The same inventor was offered a similar sum for another large town in the State, or $10,000 for oniy two cities in the country, but he retused to take it. We have these facts from the inventor himself, and they are correct. Before it was too late to negotiate we Verated the man soundly for his folly, but he was deat to all argument.
